Camps, Adriano ... et al.-- Special volume: Planet Ocean. Scientia Marina 80(Suppl.1) 2016.-- 14 pages, 20 figures[EN] This article summarizes some of the activities in which Jordi Font, research professor and head of the Department of Physical and Technological Oceanography, Institut de Ciències del Mar (CSIC, Spanish National Research Council) in Barcelona, has been involved as co-Principal Investigator for Ocean Salinity of the European Space Agency Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer Mission from the perspective of the Remote Sensing Lab at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. We have probably left out some of his many contributions to salinity remote sensing, but we hope that this review will give an idea of the importance of his work. We focus on the following issues: 1) the new accurate measurements of the sea water dielectric constant, 2) the WISE and EuroSTARRS field experiments that helped to define the geophysical model function relating brightness temperature to sea state, 3) the FROG 2003 field experiment that helped to understand the emission of sea foam, 4) GNSS-R techniques for improving sea surface salinity retrieval, 5) instrument characterization campaigns, and 6) the operational implementation of the Processing Centre of Levels 3 and 4 at the SMOS Barcelona Expert Centre[ES] Este artículo resume algunas de las actividades en las que Jordi Font, profesor de investigación y jefe del Departamento de Física y Tecnología Oceanográfica, del Institut de Ciències del Mar (CSIC) en Barcelona, ha estado desarrollando como co-Investigador Principal de la parte de la misión SMOS de la ESA, una misión Earth Explorer, desde la perspectiva del Remote Sensing Lab, de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Modeling Kepler transit light curves as false positives: Rejection of blend scenarios for Kepler-9, and validation of Kepler-9d, a super-Earth-size planet in a multiple system
Light curves from the Kepler Mission contain valuable information on the
nature of the phenomena producing the transit-like signals. To assist in
exploring the possibility that they are due to an astrophysical false positive,
we describe a procedure (BLENDER) to model the photometry in terms of a "blend"
rather than a planet orbiting a star. A blend may consist of a background or
foreground eclipsing binary (or star-planet pair) whose eclipses are attenuated
by the light of the candidate and possibly other stars within the photometric
aperture. We apply BLENDER to the case of Kepler-9, a target harboring two
previously confirmed Saturn-size planets (Kepler-9b and Kepler-9c) showing
transit timing variations, and an additional shallower signal with a 1.59-day
period suggesting the presence of a super-Earth-size planet. Using BLENDER
together with constraints from other follow-up observations we are able to rule
out all blends for the two deeper signals, and provide independent validation
of their planetary nature. For the shallower signal we rule out a large
fraction of the false positives that might mimic the transits. The false alarm
rate for remaining blends depends in part (and inversely) on the unknown
frequency of small-size planets. Based on several realistic estimates of this
frequency we conclude with very high confidence that this small signal is due
to a super-Earth-size planet (Kepler-9d) in a multiple system, rather than a
false positive. The radius is determined to be 1.64 (+0.19/-0.14) R(Earth), and
current spectroscopic observations are as yet insufficient to establish its
mass.Comment: 20 pages in emulateapj format, including 8 tables and 16 figures. To

Interior structure models of GJ 436b
GJ 436b is the first extrasolar planet discovered that resembles Neptune in
mass and radius. The particularly interesting property of Neptune-sized planets
is that their mass Mp and radius Rp are close to theoretical M-R relations of
water planets. Given Mp, Rp, and equilibrium temperature, however, various
internal compositions are possible. A broad set of interior structure models is
presented here that illustrates the dependence of internal composition and
possible phases of water occurring in presumably water-rich planets, such as GJ
436b on the uncertainty in atmospheric temperature profile and mean density. We
show how the set of solutions can be narrowed down if theoretical constraints
from formation and model atmospheres are applied or potentially observational
constraints for the atmospheric metallicity Z1 and the tidal Love number k2. We
model the interior by assuming either three layers (hydrogen-helium envelope,
water layer, rock core) or two layers (H/He/H2O envelope, rocky core). For
water, we use the equation of state H2O-REOS based on FT-DFT-MD simulations.
Some admixture of H/He appears mandatory for explaining the measured radius.
For the warmest considered models, the H/He mass fraction can reduce to 10^-3,
still extending over ~0.7 REarth. If water occurs, it will be essentially in
the plasma phase or in the superionic phase, but not in an ice phase.
Metal-free envelope models have 0.02<k2<0.2, and the core mass cannot be
determined from a measurement of k2. In contrast, models with 0.3<k2<0.82
require high metallicities Z1<0.89 in the outer envelope. The uncertainty in
core mass decreases to 0.4 Mp, if k2>0.3, and further to 0.2 Mp, if k2>0.5, and
core mass and Z1 become sensitive functions of k2. To further narrow the set of
solutions, a proper treatment of the atmosphere and the evolution is necessary.Comment: 9 pages, accepted to A&
Relationship between Serum Concentration of Uric Acid and Insulin Secretion among Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
To determine the relationship between serum concentrations of uric acid and insulin secretion with hyperglycaemic clamp technique among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) without hyperuricemia, we carried out a cross-sectional study on 45 patients of both gender. We observed correlation between uric acid with male gender r = 0.710 (P = 0.001). Also correlation between uric acid and total insulin secretion was positive r = 0.295 (P = 0.049). As well as a positive correlation adjusted for body mass index was demonstrated for the first, second, and total phases of insulin secretion, respectively, r = 0.438 (P = 0.022), r = 0.433 (P = 0.022), and r = 0.439 (P = 0.024). Serum concentration of uric acid showed a positive relationship with the total phase of insulin secretion; even in states prior to hyperuricemia, uric acid can play an important role in the function of the beta cell in patients with DM2
Five Kepler target stars that show multiple transiting exoplanet candidates
We present and discuss five candidate exoplanetary systems identified with
the Kepler spacecraft. These five systems show transits from multiple exoplanet
candidates. Should these objects prove to be planetary in nature, then these
five systems open new opportunities for the field of exoplanets and provide new
insights into the formation and dynamical evolution of planetary systems. We
discuss the methods used to identify multiple transiting objects from the
Kepler photometry as well as the false-positive rejection methods that have
been applied to these data. One system shows transits from three distinct
objects while the remaining four systems show transits from two objects. Three
systems have planet candidates that are near mean motion
commensurabilities---two near 2:1 and one just outside 5:2. We discuss the
implications that multitransiting systems have on the distribution of orbital
inclinations in planetary systems, and hence their dynamical histories; as well
as their likely masses and chemical compositions. A Monte Carlo study indicates
that, with additional data, most of these systems should exhibit detectable
transit timing variations (TTV) due to gravitational interactions---though none
are apparent in these data. We also discuss new challenges that arise in TTV
analyses due to the presence of more than two planets in a system.Comment: Accepted to Ap
Kepler-21b: A 1.6REarth Planet Transiting the Bright Oscillating F Subgiant Star HD 179070
We present Kepler observations of the bright (V=8.3), oscillating star HD
179070. The observations show transit-like events which reveal that the star is
orbited every 2.8 days by a small, 1.6 R_Earth object. Seismic studies of HD
179070 using short cadence Kepler observations show that HD 179070 has a
frequencypower spectrum consistent with solar-like oscillations that are
acoustic p-modes. Asteroseismic analysis provides robust values for the mass
and radius of HD 179070, 1.34{\pm}0.06 M{\circ} and 1.86{\pm}0.04 R{\circ}
respectively, as well as yielding an age of 2.84{\pm}0.34 Gyr for this F5
subgiant. Together with ground-based follow-up observations, analysis of the
Kepler light curves and image data, and blend scenario models, we
conservatively show at the >99.7% confidence level (3{\sigma}) that the transit
event is caused by a 1.64{\pm}0.04 R_Earth exoplanet in a 2.785755{\pm}0.000032
day orbit. The exoplanet is only 0.04 AU away from the star and our
spectroscopic observations provide an upper limit to its mass of ~10 M_Earth
(2-{\sigma}). HD 179070 is the brightest exoplanet host star yet discovered by
Kepler.Comment: Accepted to Ap
Masses, radii, and orbits of small Kepler planets : The transition from gaseous to rocky planets
We report on the masses, sizes, and orbits of the planets orbiting 22 Kepler stars. There are 49 planet candidates around these stars, including 42 detected through transits and 7 revealed by precise Doppler measurements of the host stars. Based on an analysis of the Kepler brightness measurements, along with high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy, Doppler spectroscopy, and (for 11 stars) asteroseismology, we establish low false-positive probabilities (FPPs) for all of the transiting planets (41 of 42 have an FPP under 1%), and we constrain their sizes and masses. Most of the transiting planets are smaller than three times the size of Earth. For 16 planets, the Doppler signal was securely detected, providing a direct measurement of the planet's mass. For the other 26 planets we provide either marginal mass measurements or upper limits to their masses and densities; in many cases we can rule out a rocky composition. We identify six planets with densities above 5 g cm-3, suggesting a mostly rocky interior for them. Indeed, the only planets that are compatible with a purely rocky composition are smaller than 2 R ⊕. Larger planets evidently contain a larger fraction of low-density material (H, He, and H2O).Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Evaluation of silver nanoparticles for the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection in health workers: In vitro and in vivo
14 Pág.SARS-CoV-2 infection in hospital areas is of a particular concern, since the close interaction between health care personnel and patients diagnosed with COVID-19, which allows virus to be easily spread between them and subsequently to their families and communities. Preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare personnel is essential to reduce the frequency of infections and outbreaks during the pandemic considering that they work in high-risk areas. In this research, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were tested in vitro and shown to have an inhibitory effect on SARS-CoV-2 infection in cultured cells. Subsequently, we assess the effects of mouthwash and nose rinse with ARGOVIT® silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), in the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 contagion in health workers consider as high-risk group of acquiring the infection in the General Tijuana Hospital, Mexico, a hospital for the exclusive recruitment of patients diagnosed with COVID-19. We present a prospective randomized study of 231 participants that was carried out for 9 weeks (during the declaration of a pandemic). The "experimental" group was instructed to do mouthwash and nose rinse with the AgNPs solution; the "control" group was instructed to do mouthwashes and nose rinse in a conventional way. The incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection was significantly lower in the "experimental" group (two participants of 114, 1.8%) compared to the "control" group (thirty-three participants of 117, 28.2%), with an 84.8% efficiency. We conclude that the mouth and nasal rinse with AgNPs helps in the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection in health personnel who are exposed to patients diagnosed with COVID-19.The authors of this study would like to thank the staff of General Tijuana Hospital for their invaluable participation in this research during the extremely difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The health care personnel are under intense workout during this pandemic. The authors would also like to thank CONACyT “International Network of Bionanotechnology with an Impact on Biomedicine, Food and Biosafety” and Tomsk Polytechnic University for their important collaboration in the field of fundamental and applied research on nanomaterials in nanomedicine.Peer reviewe
