Engaging families in physical activity research: a family-based focus group study
Abstract
Background
Family-based interventions present a much-needed opportunity to increase children’s physical activity levels. However, little is known about how best to engage parents and their children in physical activity research. This study aimed to engage with the whole family to understand how best to recruit for, and retain participation in, physical activity research.
Methods
Families (including a ‘target’ child aged between 8 and 11 years, their parents, siblings, and others) were recruited through schools and community groups. Focus groups were conducted using a semi-structured approach (informed by a pilot session). Families were asked to order cards listing the possible benefits of, and the barriers to, being involved in physical activity research and other health promotion activities, highlighting the items they consider most relevant, and suggesting additional items. Duplicate content analysis was used to identify transcript themes and develop a coding frame.
Results
Eighty-two participants from 17 families participated, including 17 ‘target’ children (mean age 9.3 ± 1.1 years, 61.1 % female), 32 other children and 33 adults (including parents, grandparents, and older siblings). Social, health and educational benefits were cited as being key incentives for involvement in physical activity research, with emphasis on children experiencing new things, developing character, and increasing social contact (particularly for shy children). Children’s enjoyment was also given priority. The provision of child care or financial reward was not considered sufficiently appealing. Increased time commitment or scheduling difficulties were quoted as the most pertinent barriers to involvement (especially for families with several children), but parents commented these could be overcome if the potential value for children was clear.
Conclusions
Lessons learned from this work may contribute to the development of effective recruitment and retention strategies for children and their families. Making the wide range of potential benefits clear to families, providing regular feedback, and carefully considering family structure, may prove useful in achieving desired research participation. This may subsequently assist in engaging families in interventions to increase physical activity in children
Determinants of three-year change in children’s objectively measured sedentary time
Background
Sedentary behaviours (SB) are highly prevalent in young people and may be adversely associated with physical and mental health. Understanding of the modifiable determinants of SB is necessary to inform the design of behaviour change interventions but much of the existing research is cross-sectional and focussed upon screen-based behaviours.
Purpose
To examine the social, psychological and environmental determinants of change in children’s objectively measured sedentary time from age 11 to 14 years.
Methods
Data are from the second (2008) and third (2011) waves of assessment in the Sport, Physical Activity, and Eating Behaviour: Environmental Determinants in Young People (SPEEDY) study, conducted in the county of Norfolk, United Kingdom. Longitudinal data on accelerometer assessed sedentary time were available for 316 (53.5% female, 11.2±0.3 years at baseline) and 264 children after-school and at the weekend respectively. Information on 14 candidate determinants, including school travel mode and electronic media ownership, was self-reported. Change in the proportion of registered time spent sedentary was used as the outcome variable in cross-classified linear regression models, adjusted for age, sex, body mass index and baseline sedentary time. Simple and multiple models were run and interactions with sex explored.
Results
Daily sedentary time increased by 30-40 minutes after-school and at the weekend from baseline to follow-up. Participants who travelled to school by cycle exhibited smaller increases in after-school sedentary time (beta; 95%CI for change in % time spent sedentary: -3.3;-6.7,-0.07). No significant determinants of change in weekend sedentary time were identified.
Conclusions
Time spent sedentary increased during the three-year duration of follow-up but few of the variables examined were significantly associated with changes in sedentary time. Children’s mode of school travel may influence changes in their sedentary time over this period and should be examined further, alongside broader efforts to identify modifiable determinants of SB during childhood. The work was supported by the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR), a UK Clinical Research Collaboration Public Health Research Centre of Excellence (RES-590-28-0002). Associations between sedentary behaviour and physical activity in children and adolescents: a meta-analysis
Physical activity and sedentary behaviour are associated with metabolic and mental health during childhood and adolescence. Understanding the inter-relationships between these behaviours will help to inform intervention design. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized evidence from observational studies describing the association between sedentary behaviour and physical activity in young people (<18 years). English-language publications up to August 2013 were located through electronic and manual searches. Included studies presented statistical associations between at least one measure of sedentary behaviour and one measure of physical activity. One hundred sixty-three papers were included in the meta-analysis, from which data on 254 independent samples was extracted. In the summary meta-analytic model (k = 230), a small, but significant, negative association between sedentary behaviour and physical activity was observed (r = -0.108, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.128, -0.087). In moderator analyses, studies that recruited smaller samples (n < 100, r = -0.193, 95% CI = -0.276, -0.109) employed objective methods of measurement (objectively measured physical activity; r = -0.233, 95% CI = -0.330, -0.137) or were assessed to be of higher methodological quality (r = -0.176, 95% CI = -0.215, -0.138) reported stronger associations, although effect sizes remained small. The association between sedentary behaviour and physical activity in young people is negative, but small, suggesting that these behaviours do not directly displace one another
Can ‘English Premier League’ funding for PE and school sport achieve its aims?
There are a number of assertions being made for a £10 m investment by the English Premier League for primary school sport. For example, it is claimed that Physical Education plus school sport can improve cognitive functioning, concentration, behaviour, educational attainment and overall physical health. However, far from being sufficient in helping to achieve these benefits and sustain long-term activity participation, for some children, Physical Education and competitive sport may actually be counterproductive. In some instances, it may switch them off from activity altogether. Therefore, we need to understand more about which elements of this scheme work, who they work for and which circumstances they work in. Fundamentally, this will only be achieved through hard evidence and robust evaluation

Prevention and therapy of periodontal diseases and oral malodour:Brush, rinse and cool
Periodontitis is one of the two most important oral diseases that contributes to the global burden of chronic disease, the prevalence of which increases with age and represents a significant burden to public health. Maintaining a healthy oral cavity involves the prevention and therapy of gingival inflammation and dental caries. Oral malodour may have a negative impact upon an individual’s quality of life, confidence, speech, oral health and overall well-being. The reported prevalence of oral malodour ranges widely. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the different uses of water or rinses in relation to brushing, rinsing and cooling in preventing and treating periodontal diseases and oral malodour. The efficacy of toothbrushing is assessed using dental plaque scores; the clinical parameters of gingivitis and periodontal inflammation are also included. Oral malodour is measured by the organoleptic score and volatile sulphur compounds are measured using two specific apparatuses. Patient reported outcomes related to the various interventions are also evaluated
Spectroscopic Transit Search: a self-calibrating method for detecting planets around bright stars
We search for transiting exoplanets around the star Pictoris using
high resolution spectroscopy and Doppler imaging that removes the need for
standard star observations. These data were obtained on the VLT with UVES
during the course of an observing campaign throughout 2017 that monitored the
Hill sphere transit of the exoplanet Pictoris b. We utilize line
profile tomography as a method for the discovery of transiting exoplanets. By
measuring the exoplanet distortion of the stellar line profile, we remove the
need for reference star measurements. We demonstrate the method with white
noise simulations, and then look at the case of Pictoris, which is a
Scuti pulsator. We describe a method to remove the stellar pulsations
and perform a search for any transiting exoplanets in the resultant data set.
We inject fake planet transits with varying orbital periods and planet radii
into the spectra and determine the recovery fraction. In the photon noise
limited case we can recover planets down to a Neptune radius with an 80%
success rate, using an 8 m telescope with a spectrograph and 20
minutes of observations per night. The pulsations of Pictoris limit our
sensitivity to Jupiter-sized planets, but a pulsation removal algorithm
improves this limit to Saturn-sized planets. We present two planet candidates,
but argue that their signals are most likely caused by other phenomena. We have
demonstrated a method for searching for transiting exoplanets that (i) does not
require ancillary calibration observations, (ii) can work on any star whose
rotational broadening can be resolved with a high spectral dispersion
spectrograph and (iii) provides the lowest limits so far on the radii of
transiting Jupiter-sized exoplanets around Pictoris with orbital
periods from 15 days to 200 days with >50% coverage.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 8 pages, 8 figures. The Github

The article is devoted to the problem of unifying the ways to represent Chinese geographic names, persons’ names and cultural words in Ukrainian texts. The main object of the study is a capacity of Ukrainian language to reproduce Chinese sounds. It is proposed to consider an experience of transcription from Chinese into languages with Latin and Cyrillic alphabets, which is important to formulate main principles for the transcription from Chinese into Ukrainian. There are four main principles stated in the article for this pair of languages. It is also analyzed main difficulties, which occur in practice of using the transcription, based on these principles. The difficulties are divided into two groups: occurred on the level of syllable and occurred on the level of word. To solve problems on the former level, the author complicate the article with tables of Chinese syllables and there equivalents in Ukrainian. To unify writing on the latter level, the author proposes to use apostrophe if important to mark syllable bounds and change a word’s ending in Ukrainian texts according to the norms of Ukrainian grammar
