Models of electrolyte solutions from molecular descriptions: The example of NaCl solutions

We present a method to derive implicit solvent models of electrolyte solutions from all-atom descriptions; providing analytical expressions of the thermodynamic and structural properties of the ions consistent with the underlying explicit solvent representation. Effective potentials between ions in solution are calculated to perform perturbation theory calculations, in order to derive the best possible description in terms of charged hard spheres. Applying this method to NaCl solutions yields excellent agreement with the all-atom model, provided ion association is taken into account.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

On the structure of high performance anticorrosive PMMA–siloxane–silica hybrid coatings

Environmentally compliant organic–inorganic hybrid coatings for efficient corrosion protection of metallic surfaces are potential alternatives to the current method based on chromate passivation. In this context PMMA–siloxane–silica (PMMA–SS) hybrid films were prepared using the sol–gel process from the radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate followed by acidic hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), under variation of the ethanol to H2O ratio (0.0–1.0). The structural properties of about 2 ÎŒm thick coatings, deposited by dip-coating onto carbon steel, were related with their corrosion protection efficiency. The correlation of data obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and small angle X-ray scattering has shown for intermediate ethanol to H2O ratios the highest connectivity (∌83%) of the inorganic phase, bonded covalently to organic moieties, yielding a dense and homogeneous nanocomposite structure with high thermal stability, very good adhesion to the metallic substrate and excellent barrier properties. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements have shown for coatings prepared at intermediate EtOH/H2O ratios a high corrosion resistance of almost 10 GΩ cm2, which remained unchanged for more than 6 months in contact with 3.5% NaCl solution and more than 3 months exposed to an acidic NaCl environment

Microhardness and friction coefficient of multi-walled carbon nanotube-yttria-stabilized ZrO2 composites prepared by spark plasma sintering

    Get PDF
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (eight walls) are mixed with an yttria-stabilized ZrO2 powder. The specimens are densified by spark plasma sintering. Compared to ZrO2, there is a 3.8-fold decrease of the friction coefficient against alumina upon the increase in carbon content. Examinations of the friction tracks show that wear is very low when the carbon content is sufficient. Exfoliation of the nanotubes due to shearing stresses and incorporation of the debris into a lubricating film over the contact area is probable

Determination of the physico-mechanical properties of the protective oxide scale by nano-indentation

    Get PDF
Nano-indentation test was used to determine the hardness and the Young’s modulus of the thermally grown oxide formed during the high temperature (1100°C) isothermal oxidation of single crystal Ni-based superalloy. Multiple nano-indentation tests at different loads were performed on the polished cross-section and on the surface of oxide scale. The measured values of Young's modulus were E IT = 320 GPa, and E IT = 256 GPa using the cross-section indentation and the indentation normal to the surface of oxide scale correspondently. The effect of applied load on the measured values was observed. The measured values of Young's modulus were used to determine the values of the work of adhesion of metal/oxide interface

The new 14C chronology for the Palaeolithic site of La Ferrassie, France: the disappearance of Neanderthals and the arrival of Homo sapiens in France

    Get PDF
The grand abri at La Ferrassie (France) has been a key site for Palaeolithic research since the early part of the 20th century. It became the eponymous site for one variant of Middle Palaeolithic stone tools, and its sequence was used to define stages of the Aurignacian, an early phase of the Upper Palaeolithic. Several Neanderthal remains, including two relatively intact skeletons, make it one of the most important sites for the study of Neanderthal morphology and one of the more important data sets when discussing the Neanderthal treatment of the dead. However, the site has remained essentially undated. Our goal here is to provide a robust chronological framework of the La Ferrassie sequence to be used for broad regional models about human behaviour during the late Middle to Upper Palaeolithic periods. To achieve this goal, we used a combination of modern excavation methods, extensive geoarchaeological analyses, and radiocarbon dating. If we accept that Neanderthals were responsible for the ChĂątelperronian, then our results suggest an overlap of ca. 1600 years with the newly arrived Homo sapiens found elsewhere in France.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Influence of Humidity on Microtribology of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Film

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to probe the influence of water vapor environment on the microtribological properties of a forestlike vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) film, deposited on a silicon (001) substrate by chemical vapor deposition. Tribological experiments were performed using a gold tip under relative humidity varying from 0 to 100%. Very low adhesion forces and high friction coefficients of 0.6 to 1.3 resulted. The adhesion and friction forces were independent of humidity, due probably to the high hydrophobicity of VACNT. These tribological characteristics were compared to those of a diamond like carbon (DLC) sample

Multifunctional tribometer development and performance study of CuCrZr-316L material pair for ITER application

    Get PDF
Radio-Frequency (RF) contacts are key components on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) antenna, and these components are facing big challenges such as 2 kA operation current load and intensive sliding under up to 250 °C in high vacuum. Stainless steel (SS) 316L and CuCrZr are most likely to be applied as base materials for the conductor and the RF contacts louvers. To evaluate the performance of the selected materials, their electrical and tribological behaviors have to be studied. A multifunctional tribometer which can mimic the ITER ICRH RF contacts' relevant working conditions was designed and built in CEA. The contact resistance (Rc) and coefficient of friction (CoF) of CuCrZr-316L pair were researched on this tribometer
