Nativity, Neighborhoods, and Body Composition in the Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Globally, obesity influences the risk of many major chronic diseases. Our study examines the association between individual nativity and neighborhood level concentration of immigrants with 10-year changes in weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) among older Latinos. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging (SALSA) is a population-based prospective study of community-dwelling older adults of Mexican origin (baseline ages 58-101 years). The primary outcome was repeated measures of weight over a 10-year period for 1,628 respondents. Nativity was defined by participants' reported place of birth (US-born or Latin American foreign born). Neighborhood immigrant concentration was measured as the percentage of foreign born at census tract level (2000 US Census). We used linear mixed models with repeated measures of weight, height, BMI, and WC as dependent variables (level 1), clustered within individuals (level 2) and neighborhood migrant concentration (level 3). RESULTS: Foreign born (FB) respondents had lower baseline weight than the US-born (mean, 160 vs. 171 lbs, p < .0001). Over time, weight differences between the FB and the US-born decreased by 1.7 lbs/5 years as US-born weight decreased more rapidly. We observed a significant interaction between individual nativity and neighborhood immigrant concentration (p = .012). We found similar patterns for BMI, but did not find statistically significant differences in WC trajectories. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Our study observed significant differences by foreign born vs. US nativity in baseline weight/BMI and in their trajectories over time. Additionally, we found weight/BMI differences in neighborhood immigrant concentration for the FB, but not for the US-born
RIAM-VASP module relays integrin complement receptors in outside-in signaling driving particle engulfment
The phagocytic integrins and complement receptors M 2/CR3 and X 2/CR4 are classically
associated with the phagocytosis of iC3b-opsonized particles. The activation of this receptor is
dependent on signals derived from other receptors (inside-out signaling) with the crucial involvement
of the Rap1-RIAM-Talin-1 pathway. Here, we analyze the implication of RIAM and its binding
partner VASP in the signaling events occurring downstream of 2 integrins (outside-in) during
complement-mediated phagocytosis. To this end, we used HL-60 promyelocytic cell lines deficient in
RIAM or VASP or overexpressing EGFP-tagged VASP to determine VASP dynamics at phagocytic
cups. Our results indicate that RIAM-deficient HL-60 cells presented impaired particle internalization
and altered integrin downstream signaling during complement-dependent phagocytosis. Similarly,
VASP deficiency completely blocked phagocytosis, while VASP overexpression increased the random
movement of phagocytic particles at the cell surface, with reduced internalization. Moreover,
the recruitment of VASP to particle contact sites, amount of pSer157-VASP and formation of actin-rich
phagocytic cups were dependent on RIAM expression. Our results suggested that RIAM worked as a
relay for integrin complement receptors in outside-in signaling, coordinating integrin activation and
cytoskeletal rearrangements via its interaction with VASPThis work has been supported by Ministerio Español de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO)

Fractional conservation laws in optimal control theory
Using the recent formulation of Noether's theorem for the problems of the
calculus of variations with fractional derivatives, the Lagrange multiplier
technique, and the fractional Euler-Lagrange equations, we prove a Noether-like
theorem to the more general context of the fractional optimal control. As a
corollary, it follows that in the fractional case the autonomous Hamiltonian
does not define anymore a conservation law. Instead, it is proved that the
fractional conservation law adds to the Hamiltonian a new term which depends on
the fractional-order of differentiation, the generalized momentum, and the
fractional derivative of the state variable.Comment: The original publication is available at http://www.springerlink.com

6Li direct breakup lifetimes
alpha-d coincidence data were studied for the 6Li + 59Co reaction at E(lab) =
29.6 MeV. By using a kinematic analysis, it was possible to identify which
process, leading to the same final state, has the major contribution for each
of the selected angular regions. Contributions of the 6Li sequential and direct
breakup to the incomplete fusion/transfer process were discussed by considering
the lifetimes obtained by using a semiclassical approach, for both breakup
components.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Invited Talk (Parrallel Sessions) of A. Szanto de

Reaction mechanisms for weakly-bound, stable nuclei and unstable, halo nuclei on medium-mass targets
An experimental overview of reactions induced by the stable, but weakly-bound
nuclei 6Li, 7Li and 9Be, and by the exotic, halo nuclei 6He, 8B, 11Be and 17F
on medium-mass targets, such as 58Ni, 59Co or 64Zn, is presented. Existing data
on elastic scattering, total reaction cross sections, fusion processes, breakup
and transfer channels are discussed in the framework of a CDCC approach taking
into account the breakup degree of freedom.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Invited Talk given by C. Beck to the 10th

Reaction mechanisms in the 6Li+59Co system
The reactions induced by the weakly bound 6Li projectile interacting with the
intermediate mass target 59Co were investigated. Light charged particles
singles and - coincidence measurements were performed at the near
barrier energies E_lab = 17.4, 21.5, 25.5 and 29.6 MeV. The main contributions
of the different competing mechanisms are discussed. A statistical model
analysis, Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels calculations and two-body
kinematics were used as tools to provide information to disentangle the main
components of these mechanisms. A significant contribution of the direct
breakup was observed through the difference between the experimental sequential
breakup cross section and the CDCC prediction for the non-capture breakup cross
section.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figure
Circumstellar interaction in supernovae in dense environments - an observational perspective
In a supernova explosion, the ejecta interacting with the surrounding
circumstellar medium (CSM) give rise to variety of radiation. Since CSM is
created from the mass lost from the progenitor star, it carries footprints of
the late time evolution of the star. This is one of the unique ways to get a
handle on the nature of the progenitor star system. Here, I will focus mainly
on the supernovae (SNe) exploding in dense environments, a.k.a. Type IIn SNe.
Radio and X-ray emission from this class of SNe have revealed important
modifications in their radiation properties, due to the presence of high
density CSM. Forward shock dominance of the X-ray emission, internal free-free
absorption of the radio emission, episodic or non-steady mass loss rate,
asymmetry in the explosion seem to be common properties of this class of SNe.Comment: Fixed minor typos. 31 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in

Efficacy of direct current generated by multiple-electrode arrays on F3II mammary carcinoma: experiment and mathematical modeling
BACKGROUND: The modified Gompertz equation has been proposed to fit experimental data for direct current treated tumors when multiple-straight needle electrodes are individually inserted into the base perpendicular to the tumor long axis. The aim of this work is to evaluate the efficacy of direct current generated by multiple-electrode arrays on F3II mammary carcinoma that grow in the male and female BALB/c/Cenp mice, when multiple-straight needle electrodes and multiple-pairs of electrodes are inserted in the tumor. METHODS: A longitudinal and retrospective preclinical study was carried out. Male and female BALB/c/Cenp mice, the modified Gompertz equation, intensities (2, 6 and 10 mA) and exposure times (10 and 20 min) of direct current, and three geometries of multiple-electrodes (one formed by collinear electrodes and two by pair-electrodes) were used. Tumor volume and mice weight were measured. In addition, the mean tumor doubling time, tumor regression percentage, tumor growth delay, direct current overall effectiveness and mice survival were calculated. RESULTS: The greatest growth retardation, mean doubling time, regression percentage and growth delay of the primary F3II mammary carcinoma in male and female mice were observed when the geometry of multiple-pairs of electrodes was arranged in the tumor at 45, 135, 225 and 325o and the longest exposure time. In addition, highest direct current overall effectiveness (above 66%) was observed for this EChT scheme. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that electrochemical therapy may be potentially addressed to highly aggressive and metastic primary F3II murine mammary carcinoma and the modified Gompertz equation may be used to fit data of this direct current treated carcinoma. Additionally, electrochemical therapy effectiveness depends on the exposure time, geometry of multiple-electrodes and ratio between the direct current intensity applied and the polarization current induced in the tumor
