    Cell-specific synaptic plasticity induced by network oscillations

    Gamma rhythms are known to contribute to the process of memory encoding. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms at the molecular, cellular and network levels. Using local field potential recording in awake behaving mice and concomitant field potential and whole-cell recordings in slice preparations we found that gamma rhythms lead to activity-dependent modification of hippocampal networks, including alterations in sharp wave- ripple complexes. Network plasticity, expressed as long-lasting increases in sharp wave-associated synaptic currents, exhibits enhanced excitatory synaptic strength in pyramidal cells that is induced postsynaptically and depends on metabotropic glutamate receptor-5 activation. In sharp contrast, alteration of inhibitory synaptic strength is independent of postsynaptic activation and less pronounced. Further, we found a cell type-specific, directionally biased synaptic plasticity of two major types of GABAergic cells, parvalbumin- and cholecystokinin-expressing interneurons. Thus, we propose that gamma frequency oscillations represent a network state that introduces long-lasting synaptic plasticity in a cell-specific manner

    The High-Mass End of the Red Sequence at z~0.55 from SDSS-III/BOSS: completeness, bimodality and luminosity function

    We have developed an analytical method based on forward-modeling techniques to characterize the high-mass end of the red sequence (RS) galaxy population at redshift z0.55z\sim0.55, from the DR10 BOSS CMASS spectroscopic sample, which comprises 600,000\sim600,000 galaxies. The method, which follows an unbinned maximum likelihood approach, allows the deconvolution of the intrinsic CMASS colour-colour-magnitude distributions from photometric errors and selection effects. This procedure requires modeling the covariance matrix for the i-band magnitude, g-r colour and r-i colour using Stripe 82 multi-epoch data. Our results indicate that the error-deconvolved intrinsic RS distribution is consistent, within the photometric uncertainties, with a single point (<0.05 mag<0.05~{\rm{mag}}) in the colour-colour plane at fixed magnitude, for a narrow redshift slice. We have computed the high-mass end (0.55Mi22^{0.55}M_i \lesssim -22) of the 0.55i^{0.55}i-band RS Luminosity Function (RS LF) in several redshift slices within the redshift range 0.52<z<0.630.52<z<0.63. In this narrow redshift range, the evolution of the RS LF is consistent, within the uncertainties in the modeling, with a passively-evolving model with Φ=(7.248±0.204)×104\Phi_* = (7.248 \pm 0.204) \times10^{-4} Mpc3^{-3} mag1^{-1}, fading at a rate of 1.5±0.41.5\pm0.4 mag per unit redshift. We report RS completeness as a function of magnitude and redshift in the CMASS sample, which will facilitate a variety of galaxy-evolution and clustering studies using BOSS. Our forward-modeling method lays the foundations for future studies using other dark-energy surveys like eBOSS or DESI, which are affected by the same type of photometric blurring/selection effects.Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Evidence of defect-induced ferromagnetism in ZnFe₂O₄ thin films

    X-ray absorption near-edge and grazing incidence x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy are employed to investigate the electronic structure of ZnFe₂O₄ thin films. The spectroscopy techniques are used to determine the nonequilibrium cation site occupancy as a function of depth and oxygen pressure during deposition and its effects on the magnetic properties. It is found that low deposition pressures below 10 ⁻³ mbar cause iron superoccupation of tetrahedral sites without Zn²⁺ inversion, resulting in an ordered magnetic phase with high room-temperature magnetic moment.Instituto de Física La Plat

    Portable, field-based neuroimaging using high-density diffuse optical tomography

    Behavioral and cognitive tests in individuals who were malnourished as children have revealed malnutrition-related deficits that persist throughout the lifespan. These findings have motivated recent neuroimaging investigations that use highly portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) instruments to meet the demands of brain imaging experiments in low-resource environments and enable longitudinal investigations of brain function in the context of long-term malnutrition. However, recent studies in healthy subjects have demonstrated that high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) can significantly improve image quality over that obtained with sparse fNIRS imaging arrays. In studies of both task activations and resting state functional connectivity, HD-DOT is beginning to approach the data quality of fMRI for superficial cortical regions. In this work, we developed a customized HD-DOT system for use in malnutrition studies in Cali, Colombia. Our results evaluate the performance of the HD-DOT instrument for assessing brain function in a cohort of malnourished children. In addition to demonstrating portability and wearability, we show the HD-DOT instrument\u27s sensitivity to distributed brain responses using a sensory processing task and measurements of homotopic functional connectivity. Task-evoked responses to the passive word listening task produce activations localized to bilateral superior temporal gyrus, replicating previously published work using this paradigm. Evaluating this localization performance across sparse and dense reconstruction schemes indicates that greater localization consistency is associated with a dense array of overlapping optical measurements. These results provide a foundation for additional avenues of investigation, including identifying and characterizing a child\u27s individual malnutrition burden and eventually contributing to intervention development

    Susceptibilidad genética y riesgo de cáncer gástrico en una población del Cauca.

    Gastric cancer (GC) is the main cause of mortality by cancer in Colombia. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes are involved in the detoxification of many environmental carcinogens. The homozygous deletions of glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1-0) and glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1-0) have been associated with several types of cancer. The risk to develop GC has been associated with environmental factors and Helicobacter pylori infection. The tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and its levels are increased in patients infected with H. pylori. A G/ A transition in the position -308 of the promoter of the TNF-alpha has been related in several studies to an increased expression of the gene and is associated with susceptibility to GC. The association of these polymorphisms with GC and the interaction with other risk factors (life style) were investigated. Blood samples were obtained from 46 GC patients and 96 controls. The logistic regression model was used to obtain the odds ratio (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals. These statistics established the association between the enzymatic polymorphisms and GC and between other independent factors and GC. The frequency of the TNF-alpha polymorphism in people infected with H. pylori was 18% in the GC population and 7% in the control group. This transition was not significantly associated with H. pylori infection and GC. The frequencies of the deletion polymorphisms for patients and controls were as follows: GSTM1 65.2% and 37.5%; GSTT1 17.4% and 14.6%. These results suggested that the GSTM1 deletion polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer (OR of 5.5; 95%CI, 1.7-17.2). Furthermore, other risk factors such as H. pylori infection (OR 5.58, CI 1.8-17.2), smoking (OR 6.70, CI 2.2-20.3) and alcohol intake (OR 3.27, CI 1.1-9.4) were associated with GC.El cáncer gástrico es la principal causa de mortalidad por cáncer en Colombia. El riesgo de desarrollar cáncer gástrico se ha asociado con factores ambientales y con la infección por Helicobacter pylori. Las enzimas glutatión-S-transferasas están involucradas en la desintoxicación de varios carcinógenos ambientales. Las deleciones homocigóticas de glutatión-S-transferasa M1 (GSTM1-0) y glutatión-S-transferasa T1 (GSTT1-0) se han asociado con algunos tipos de cáncer. Los niveles del factor de necrosis tumoral (FNT ?) están aumentados en pacientes infectados por H. pylori. Una transición G/A en la posición -308 del promotor del FNT-? se ha visto relacionada en algunos estudios con un incremento en la expresión del gen, y está asociada con la susceptibilidad a cáncer gástrico. Se investigó la asociación de estos polimorfismos con cáncer gástrico y la interacción con otros factores de riesgo (estilo de vida). Se obtuvieron muestras de sangre de 46 pacientes con cáncer gástrico y 96 controles. Se empleó el modelo de regresión logística para obtener la razón de posibilidades (OR) y sus intervalos de confianza del 95% y, así, establecer la asociación entre los polimorfismos enzimáticos y el cáncer gástrico, y entre otros factores independientes y esta enfermedad. Las frecuencias de los polimorfismos de deleción en pacientes y controles fueron: para la GSTM1, 65,2% y 37,5%, y para la GSTT1, 17,4% y 14,6%, respectivamente. La frecuencia del polimorfismo G/A del FNT ? en las personas infectadas con H. pylori fue de 18% en la población con cáncer gástrico y de 7% en el grupo control. Nuestros resultados sugieren que el polimorfismo de deleción de GSTM1 puede estar asociado con un riesgo aumentado de cáncer gástrico (OR 5,5; IC95%, 1,7-17,2). Igualmente, nuestros datos muestran que otros factores de riesgo como la infección por H. pylori y el consumo de cigarrillo y alcohol están asociados con este tipo de cáncer (OR 5,58; IC95% 1,81-17,19; OR 6,70; IC95%, 2,20-20,30 y OR 3,27; IC95% 1,14-9,4, respectivamente)

    EXTRAGENITAL TRANSMISSIBLE VENEREAL TUMOR: RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF 11 CASES

    Se realizó el seguimiento médico a 11 pacientes caninos atendidos entre junio de 2003 y agosto 2009 con historia o signos clínicos compatibles con tumor venéreo transmisible (TVT) canino de ubicación extragenital. Se les hizo pruebas radiográficas y ecográficas, y se les tomó muestras para análisis citológicos, histopatológicos y de laboratorio clínico. La presentación de TVT en cavidad nasal fue la más frecuente (9/11), donde la epistaxis unilateral fue el signo clínico más común (7). Solo se observó un caso de epistaxis bilateral. La descarga sanguinolenta fue el único signo observado en los casos donde la lesión se ubicó en muñón uterino (1) o en el ano (1). La duración de los signos clínicos fue de 2.8 meses (0.5 a 12 meses). Los procedimientos ecográficos y radiográficos fueron de gran ayuda para determinar la presencia, ubicación y tamaño de las lesiones; la citología e histopatología fueron los procedimientos de elección para el diagnóstico del TVT extragenital; y la quimioterapia con sulfato de vincristina, por 6.5 semanas (4 a 9 semanas), fue efectiva en todos los casos, observándose remisión de los signos clínicos y disminución o desaparición de las alteraciones imagenológicas.A medical follow-up on 11 patients with clinical signs compatible with extra-genital canine venereal transmissible tumor was conducted from June 2003 to August 2009. The canines were evaluated and further medical procedures such as radiographies, ultrasounds, cytology and histopathology were performed to confirm the diagnosis. The nasal tumor was the most common presentation (9/11) and unilateral epistaxis was the most common clinical sign (7). Only one case of bilateral epistaxis was observed. Bloody discharge was the only clinical sign observed in cases where the lesion was located in the uterine stump (1) or anus (1). The clinical signs lasted in average 2.8 months (0.5-12 months). The ultrasound and radiographic procedures were helpful in determining the presentation, location and size of the lesions; the cytology and histopathology showed to be suitable clinical procedures to determine the final diagnosis; and treatment with vincristina sulfate, used for 6.5 weeks (4 to 9 weeks) proved to be effective in all cases as imagenological alterations decreased or disappeared

    The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: single-probe measurements from CMASS anisotropic galaxy clustering

    With the largest spectroscopic galaxy survey volume drawn from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), we can extract cosmological constraints from the measurements of redshift and geometric distortions at quasi-linear scales (e.g. above 50 h1h^{-1}Mpc). We analyze the broad-range shape of the monopole and quadrupole correlation functions of the BOSS Data Release 12 (DR12) CMASS galaxy sample, at the effective redshift z=0.59z=0.59, to obtain constraints on the Hubble expansion rate H(z)H(z), the angular-diameter distance DA(z)D_A(z), the normalized growth rate f(z)σ8(z)f(z)\sigma_8(z), and the physical matter density Ωmh2\Omega_mh^2. We obtain robust measurements by including a polynomial as the model for the systematic errors, and find it works very well against the systematic effects, e.g., ones induced by stars and seeing. We provide accurate measurements {DA(0.59)rs,fid/rs\{D_A(0.59)r_{s,fid}/r_s Mpc\rm Mpc, H(0.59)rs/rs,fidH(0.59)r_s/r_{s,fid} kms1Mpc1km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, f(0.59)σ8(0.59)f(0.59)\sigma_8(0.59), Ωmh2}\Omega_m h^2\} = {1427±26\{1427\pm26, 97.3±3.397.3\pm3.3, 0.488±0.0600.488 \pm 0.060, 0.135±0.016}0.135\pm0.016\}, where rsr_s is the comoving sound horizon at the drag epoch and rs,fid=147.66r_{s,fid}=147.66 Mpc is the sound scale of the fiducial cosmology used in this study. The parameters which are not well constrained by our galaxy clustering analysis are marginalized over with wide flat priors. Since no priors from other data sets, e.g., cosmic microwave background (CMB), are adopted and no dark energy models are assumed, our results from BOSS CMASS galaxy clustering alone may be combined with other data sets, i.e., CMB, SNe, lensing or other galaxy clustering data to constrain the parameters of a given cosmological model. The uncertainty on the dark energy equation of state parameter, ww, from CMB+CMASS is about 8 per cent. The uncertainty on the curvature fraction, Ωk\Omega_k, is 0.3 per cent.     SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey data release 12 : galaxy target selection and large-scale structure catalogues

    The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) III project, has provided the largest survey of galaxy redshifts available to date, in terms of both the number of galaxy redshifts measured by a single survey, and the effective cosmological volume covered. Key to analysing the clustering of these data to provide cosmological measurements is understanding the detailed properties of this sample. Potential issues include variations in the target catalogue caused by changes either in the targeting algorithm or properties of the data used, the pattern of spectroscopic observations, the spatial distribution of targets for which redshifts were not obtained, and variations in the target sky density due to observational systematics. We document here the target selection algorithms used to create the galaxy samples that comprise BOSS. We also present the algorithms used to create large-scale structure catalogues for the final Data Release (DR12) samples and the associated random catalogues that quantify the survey mask. The algorithms are an evolution of those used by the BOSS team to construct catalogues from earlier data, and have been designed to accurately quantify the galaxy sample.     Oxygen-vacancy-induced local ferromagnetism as a driving mechanism in enhancing the magnetic response of ferrites

    This work probes the relevance of oxygen vacancies in the formation of local ferromagnetic coupling between Fe ions at octahedral sites in zinc ferrites. This coupling gives rise to a ferrimagnetic ordering with the Curie temperatures above room temperature in an otherwise antiferromagnetic compound. This conclusion is based on experimental results from x-raymagnetic circular dichroismmeasurements at the Fe L2,3 edges and magnetization measurements performed on zinc ferrites, nanoparticles, and films, with different cation distributions and oxygen vacancy concentrations. Our observations are confirmed by density-functional-theory calculations and indicate that the enhanced ferrimagnetic response observed in some nominally nonmagnetic or antiferromagnetic ferrites can be taken as a further example of the defect-induced magnetism phenomenon.Fil: RodrÍguez Torres, Claudia Elena.
