This paper resumes the different analyses developped in this volume by M. Bianco & C. Schnedecker, while situating them under the larger perspective of the psychological studies about knowledge representation (prototypes, stereotypes, scripts or scenarii) which may be implied in the interpretation of associative anaphora. At that point, we study the psychological parameters related to the structure of the cognitive system such as typicality and the status of the notion of associative link, as well as the temporal modalities of contextual effects as compared to inferential processes and situated within the general models of the on-line treatment of linguistic forms. These notions illustrate the accuracy of a real ’situational’ analysis of associative anaphora, taking into account the temporal dynamics of the possible interactions between the linguistic structure and the cognitive subject. The aim of this analysis is to precise both the autonomy of psycholinguistic models towards linguistic descriptions of associative anaphoras and the correspondances that a pluridisciplinar cooperation allows us to draw out

Word processing speed in peripheral vision measured with a saccadic choice task.

International audienceA saccadic choice task (Kirchner & Thorpe, 2006) was used to measure word processing speed in peripheral vision. To do so, word targets were accompanied by distractor stimuli, which were random strings of consonants presented in the contralateral visual field. Participants were also tested with the animal stimuli of Kirchner and Thorpe's original study. The results obtained with the animal stimuli provide a straightforward replication of prior findings, with the estimated fastest saccade latencies to animal targets being 140ms. With the word targets, the fastest reliable saccades occurred with latencies of around 200ms. The results obtained with word targets provide a timing estimate for word processing in peripheral vision that is incompatible with sequential-attention-shift (SAS) accounts of eye movement control in reading
