When presented with lower incomes, reduced employment, and other economic shocks, households have responded by adjusting their consumer behavior and adopting a number of coping strategies.     Upper critical field for underdoped high-T_c superconductors. Pseudogap and stripe--phase

    We investigate the upper critical field in a stripe--phase and in the presence of a phenomenological pseudogap. Our results indicate that the formation of stripes affects the Landau orbits and results in an enhancement of Hc2H_{c2}. On the other hand, phenomenologically introduced pseudogap leads to a reduction of the upper critical field. This effect is of particular importance when the magnitude of the gap is of the order of the superconducting transition temperature. We have found that a suppression of the upper critical field takes place also for the gap that originates from the charge--density waves.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    "Pair" Fermi contour and repulsion-induced superconductivity in cuprates

    The pairing of charge carriers with large pair momentum is considered in connection with high-temperature superconductivity of cuprate compounds. The possibility of pairing arises due to some essential features of quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure of cuprates: (i) The Fermi contour with strong nesting features; (ii) The presence of extended saddle point near the Fermi level; (iii) The existence of some ordered state (for example, antiferromagnetic) close to the superconducting one as a reason for an appearing of "pair" Fermi contour resulting from carrier redistribution in momentum space. In an extended vicinity of the saddle point, momentum space has hyperbolic (pseudoeuclidean) metrics, therefore, the principal values of two-dimensional reciprocal reduced effective mass tensor have unlike signs. Rearrangement of holes in momentum space results in a rise of "pair" Fermi contour which may be defined as zero-energy line for relative motion of the pair. The superconducting gap arises just on this line. Pair Fermi contour formation inside the region of momentum space with hyperbolic metrics results in not only superconducting pairing but in a rise of quasi-stationary state in the relative motion of the pair. Such a state has rather small decay and may be related to the pseudogap regime of underdoped cuprates. It is concluded that the pairing in cuprates may be due to screened Coulomb repulsion. In this case, the superconducting energy gap in hole-doped cuprates exists in the region of hole concentration which is bounded both above and below. The superconducting state with positive condensation energy exists in more narrow range of doping level inside this region. Such hole concentration dependence correlates with typical phase diagram of cuprates.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Evolution of the resonance and incommensurate spin fluctuations in superconducting YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x}

    Polarized and unpolarized neutron triple-axis spectrometry was used to study the dynamical magnetic susceptibility χ(q,ω)\chi^{\prime\prime}({\bf q},\omega) as a function of energy (ω\hbar\omega) and wave vector (q{\bf q}) in a wide temperature range for the bilayer superconductor YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} with oxygen concentrations, xx, of 0.45, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.93, and 0.95. The most prominent features in the magnetic spectra include a spin gap in the superconducting state, a pseudogap in the normal state, the much-discussed resonance, and incommensurate spin fluctuations below the resonance. We establish the doping dependence of the spin gap in the superconducting state, the resonance energy, and the incommensurability of the spin fluctuations. We discuss in detail the procedure used for separating the magnetic scattering from phonon and other spurious effects. In the comparison of our experimental results with various microscopic theoretical models, particular emphasis was made to address the similarities and differences in the spin fluctuations of YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} and La2x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4.Comment: 23 pages with 30 figures, Phys.     Renormalized mean-field theory of the neutron scattering in cuprate superconductors

    The magnetic excitation spectrum of the t-t'-J-model is studied in mean-field theory and compared to inelastic neutron-scattering (INS) experiments on YBCO and BSCCO superconductors. Within the slave-particle formulation the dynamical spin response is calculated from a renormalized Fermi liquid with an effective interaction ~J in the magnetic particle--hole channel. We obtain the so-called 41meV resonance at wave vector (pi,pi) as a collective spin-1 excitation in the d-wave superconducting state. It appears sharp (undamped), if the underlying Fermi surface is hole-like with a sufficient next-nearest-neighbor hopping t'<0. The double-layer structure of YBCO or BSCCO is not important for the resonance to form. The resonance energy \omega_{res} and spectral weight at optimal doping come out comparable to experiment. The observed qualitative behavior of \omega_{res} with hole filling is reproduced in the underdoped as well as overdoped regime. A second, much broader peak becomes visible in the magnetic excitation spectrum if the 2D wave-vector is integrated over. It is caused by excitations across the maximum gap, and in contrast to the resonance its energy is almost independent of doping. At energies above or below \omega_{res} the commensurate resonance splits into incommensurate peaks, located off (pi,pi). Below \omega_{res} the intensity pattern is of `parallel' type and the dispersion relation of incommensurate peaks has a negative curvature.     How to detect fluctuating order in the high-temperature superconductors

    We discuss fluctuating order in a quantum disordered phase proximate to a quantum critical point, with particular emphasis on fluctuating stripe order. Optimal strategies for extracting information concerning such local order from experiments are derived with emphasis on neutron scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy. These ideas are tested by application to two model systems - the exactly solvable one dimensional electron gas with an impurity, and a weakly-interacting 2D electron gas. We extensively review experiments on the cuprate high-temperature superconductors which can be analyzed using these strategies. We adduce evidence that stripe correlations are widespread in the cuprates. Finally, we compare and contrast the advantages of two limiting perspectives on the high-temperature superconductor: weak coupling, in which correlation effects are treated as a perturbation on an underlying metallic (although renormalized) Fermi liquid state, and strong coupling, in which the magnetism is associated with well defined localized spins, and stripes are viewed as a form of micro-phase separation.     Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks, 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015

    SummaryBackground The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 provides an up-to-date synthesis of the evidence for risk factor exposure and the attributable burden of disease. By providing national and subnational assessments spanning the past 25 years, this study can inform debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. Methods We used the comparative risk assessment framework developed for previous iterations of the Global Burden of Disease Study to estimate attributable deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and trends in exposure by age group, sex, year, and geography for 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks from 1990 to 2015. This study included 388 risk-outcome pairs that met World Cancer Research Fund-defined criteria for convincing or probable evidence. We extracted relative risk and exposure estimates from randomised controlled trials, cohorts, pooled cohorts, household surveys, census data, satellite data, and other sources. We used statistical models to pool data, adjust for bias, and incorporate covariates. We developed a metric that allows comparisons of exposure across risk factors—the summary exposure value. Using the counterfactual scenario of theoretical minimum risk level, we estimated the portion of deaths and DALYs that could be attributed to a given risk. We decomposed trends in attributable burden into contributions from population growth, population age structure, risk exposure, and risk-deleted cause-specific DALY rates. We characterised risk exposure in relation to a Socio-demographic Index (SDI). Findings Between 1990 and 2015, global exposure to unsafe sanitation, household air pollution, childhood underweight, childhood stunting, and smoking each decreased by more than 25%. Global exposure for several occupational risks, high body-mass index (BMI), and drug use increased by more than 25% over the same period. All risks jointly evaluated in 2015 accounted for 57·8% (95% CI 56·6–58·8) of global deaths and 41·2% (39·8–42·8) of DALYs. In 2015, the ten largest contributors to global DALYs among Level 3 risks were high systolic blood pressure (211·8 million [192·7 million to 231·1 million] global DALYs), smoking (148·6 million [134·2 million to 163·1 million]), high fasting plasma glucose (143·1 million [125·1 million to 163·5 million]), high BMI (120·1 million [83·8 million to 158·4 million]), childhood undernutrition (113·3 million [103·9 million to 123·4 million]), ambient particulate matter (103·1 million [90·8 million to 115·1 million]), high total cholesterol (88·7 million [74·6 million to 105·7 million]), household air pollution (85·6 million [66·7 million to 106·1 million]), alcohol use (85·0 million [77·2 million to 93·0 million]), and diets high in sodium (83·0 million [49·3 million to 127·5 million]). From 1990 to 2015, attributable DALYs declined for micronutrient deficiencies, childhood undernutrition, unsafe sanitation and water, and household air pollution; reductions in risk-deleted DALY rates rather than reductions in exposure drove these declines. Rising exposure contributed to notable increases in attributable DALYs from high BMI, high fasting plasma glucose, occupational carcinogens, and drug use. Environmental risks and childhood undernutrition declined steadily with SDI; low physical activity, high BMI, and high fasting plasma glucose increased with SDI. In 119 countries, metabolic risks, such as high BMI and fasting plasma glucose, contributed the most attributable DALYs in 2015. Regionally, smoking still ranked among the leading five risk factors for attributable DALYs in 109 countries; childhood underweight and unsafe sex remained primary drivers of early death and disability in much of sub-Saharan Africa. Interpretation Declines in some key environmental risks have contributed to declines in critical infectious diseases. Some risks appear to be invariant to SDI. Increasing risks, including high BMI, high fasting plasma glucose, drug use, and some occupational exposures, contribute to rising burden from some conditions, but also provide opportunities for intervention. Some highly preventable risks, such as smoking, remain major causes of attributable DALYs, even as exposure is declining.     The Origin of the Pseudogap in Underdoped HTSC

    Here the Origin of the pseudogap in HTSC is attributed to the modulated antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase, whose preliminary version has been sketched recently by the present author [1](arXiv:0901.3896v2 (cond.-mat.sup-con)). Starting from the t-J Hamiltonian, I show that the formal failure of the perturbation theory leads to a transformation to the pseudogap phase. This phase is characterized by the aggregation of the holes into rows and columns, which in turn results in two internal fields. The first is the modulated AFM field, whose main evidence comes from Neutron scattering experiments. The second internal field is made up by the checkerboard charge density waves that have been observed by Scanning Tunneling Measurements. The present paper deals mainly with the internal field of the first type, and discusses the second type only tentatively. Formalism is derived that yields the ground state, the internal field, the Hamiltonian, and the propagators of the condensed phase. Our results resolve the presumably inherent self contradictory concept of pseudogap. It is shown that the excitation energy spectrum is gapless despite the order parameter that is inherent to the condensed system. In addition, it is shown qualitatively that our model predicts "Fermi surface" that is in agreement with experiment

    Epigenetics and developmental programming of welfare and production traits in farm animals

    The concept that postnatal health and development can be influenced by events that occur in utero originated from epidemiological studies in humans supported by numerous mechanistic (including epigenetic) studies in a variety of model species. Referred to as the ‘developmental origins of health and disease’ or ‘DOHaD’ hypothesis, the primary focus of large-animal studies until quite recently had been biomedical. Attention has since turned towards traits of commercial importance in farm animals. Herein we review the evidence that prenatal risk factors, including suboptimal parental nutrition, gestational stress, exposure to environmental chemicals and advanced breeding technologies, can determine traits such as postnatal growth, feed efficiency, milk yield, carcass composition, animal welfare and reproductive potential. We consider the role of epigenetic and cytoplasmic mechanisms of inheritance, and discuss implications for livestock production and future research endeavours. We conclude that although the concept is proven for several traits, issues relating to effect size, and hence commercial importance, remain. Studies have also invariably been conducted under controlled experimental conditions, frequently assessing single risk factors, thereby limiting their translational value for livestock production. We propose concerted international research efforts that consider multiple, concurrent stressors to better represent effects of contemporary animal production systems
