Deep Photometry of the Globular Cluster M5: Distance Estimates from White Dwarf and Main Sequence Stars
We present deep VI photometry of stars in the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904)
based on images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting
color-magnitude diagram reaches below V ~ 27 mag, revealing the upper 2-3
magnitudes of the white dwarf cooling sequence, and main sequence stars eight
magnitudes and more below the turn-off. We fit the main sequence to subdwarfs
of known parallax to obtain a true distance modulus of (m-M)_0 = 14.45 +/- 0.11
mag. A second distance estimate based on fitting the cluster white dwarf
sequence to field white dwarfs with known parallax yielded (m-M)_0 = 14.67 +/-
0.18 mag. We couple our distance estimates with extensive photometry of the
cluster's RR Lyrae variables to provide a calibration of the RR Lyrae absolute
magnitude yielding M_V(RR) = 0.42 +/- 0.10 mag at [Fe/H] = -1.11 dex. We
provide another luminosity calibration in the form of reddening-free Wasenheit
functions. Comparison of our calibrations with predictions based on recent
models combining stellar evolution and pulsation theories shows encouraging

Pedagogical self-efficacy improves student evaluations: defining new sub-categories across faculty gender in management education
Pedagogical self-efficacy is the self-confidence that faculty members hold for their own ability to teach. This project used mixed method data from 20 interviews with faculty members, 85 self-assessments from professors, and 20,000 course evaluations from students to conclude that male professors show higher scores in three aspects of self-efficacy – designing a course, managing a classroom full of students, and providing feedback to students – than female professors. The data also show higher scores for male professors in student evaluations. Despite the gender differences, faculty self-efficacy for these three activities each predicted student evaluations for both male and female faculty members, with one exception. Male professors who reported higher confidence in their ability to design a course received lower evaluations from students. The distinctions have clear implications for both male and female professors, as well as for academic institutions seeking to develop their faculty and for researchers exploring pedagogical psychology
Contribution of White Dwarfs to Cluster Masses
I present a literature search through 31 July 1997 of white dwarfs (WDs) in
open and globular clusters. There are 36 single WDs and 5 WDs in binaries known
among 13 open clusters, and 340 single WDs and 11 WDs in binaries known among
11 globular clusters. From these data I have calculated WD mass fractions for
four open clusters (the Pleiades, NGC 2168, NGC 3532, and the Hyades) and one
globular cluster (NGC 6121). I develop a simple model of cluster evolution that
incorporates stellar evolution but not dynamical evolution to interpret the WD
mass fractions. I augment the results of my simple model with N-body
simulations incorporating stellar evolution (Terlevich 1987; de la Feunte
Marcos 1996; Vesperini & Heggie 1997). I find that even though these clusters
undergo moderate to strong kinematical evolution the WD mass fraction is
relatively insensitive to kinematical evolution. By comparing the cluster mass
functions to that of the Galactic disk, and incorporating plausibility
arguments for the mass function of the Galactic halo, I estimate the WD mass
fraction in these two populations. I assume the Galactic disk is ~10 Gyrs old
(Winget et al. 1987; Liebert, Dahn, & Monet 1988; Oswalt et al. 1996) and that
the Galactic halo is ~12 Gyrs old (Reid 1997b; Gratton et al. 1997; Chaboyer et
al. 1998), although the WD mass fraction is insensitive to age in this range. I
find that the Galactic halo should contain 8 to 9% (alpha = -2.35) or perhaps
as much as 15 to 17% (alpha = -2.0) of its stellar mass in the form of WDs. The
Galactic disk WD mass fraction should be 6 to 7% (alpha = -2.35), consistent
with the empirical estimates of 3 to 7% (Liebert, Dahn, & Monet 1988; Oswalt et

The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: the growth rate of cosmic structure since redshift z=0.9
We present precise measurements of the growth rate of cosmic structure for
the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.9, using redshift-space distortions in the
galaxy power spectrum of the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. Our results, which
have a precision of around 10% in four independent redshift bins, are well-fit
by a flat LCDM cosmological model with matter density parameter Omega_m = 0.27.
Our analysis hence indicates that this model provides a self-consistent
description of the growth of cosmic structure through large-scale perturbations
and the homogeneous cosmic expansion mapped by supernovae and baryon acoustic
oscillations. We achieve robust results by systematically comparing our data
with several different models of the quasi-linear growth of structure including
empirical models, fitting formulae calibrated to N-body simulations, and
perturbation theory techniques. We extract the first measurements of the power
spectrum of the velocity divergence field, P_vv(k), as a function of redshift
(under the assumption that P_gv(k) = -sqrt[P_gg(k) P_vv(k)] where g is the
galaxy overdensity field), and demonstrate that the WiggleZ galaxy-mass
cross-correlation is consistent with a deterministic (rather than stochastic)
scale-independent bias model for WiggleZ galaxies for scales k < 0.3 h/Mpc.
Measurements of the cosmic growth rate from the WiggleZ Survey and other
current and future observations offer a powerful test of the physical nature of
dark energy that is complementary to distance-redshift measures such as

Efficacy of a silver colloidal gel against selected oral bacteria in vitro [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]
Background: It is necessary to develop new strategies to protect against bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, and Streptococcus salivarius, which contribute to tooth decay and plaque formation. Our current study investigated the efficacy of a colloidal silver gel in inhibiting biofilm formation by these principal oral bacteria, in vitro. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a colloidal silver gel formulation for inhibiting bacterial biofilm formation (Ag-gel) by the principal bacteria that cause plaque formation and tooth decay. Methods: The effect of Ag-gel on viability of S. mutans, S. sanguis, and S. salivarius was assessed by quantifying their colony forming units (CFU) in presence or absence of the test gel. The effect of this formulation on biofilm-forming ability of these bacteria was studied through scanning electron microscopy. Results: Using the CFU assays, over 6 logs of inhibition (100%) were found for S. mutans, S. sanguis, and S. salivarius for the Ag-gel-treated bacteria when compared with the control gel. In addition, the Ag-gel also inhibited biofilm formation by these three bacteria mixed together. These results were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Conclusions: The Ag-gel was effective in preventing biofilm formation by S. mutans, S. sanguis, and S. salivarius. This Ag-gel should be tested for the ability to block plaque formation in the mouth, through its use as a tooth paste
Complex patterns of human antisera reactivity to novel 2009 H1N1 and historical H1N1 influenza strains
Background: During the 2009 influenza pandemic, individuals over the age of 60 had the lowest incidence of infection with approximately 25% of these people having pre-existing, cross-reactive antibodies to novel 2009 H1N1 influenza isolates. It was proposed that older people had pre-existing antibodies induced by previous 1918-like virus infection(s) that cross-reacted to novel H1N1 strains. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using antisera collected from a cohort of individuals collected before the second wave of novel H1N1 infections, only a minority of individuals with 1918 influenza specific antibodies also demonstrated hemagglutination-inhibition activity against the novel H1N1 influenza. In this study, we examined human antisera collected from individuals that ranged between the ages of 1 month and 90 years to determine the profile of seropositive influenza immunity to viruses representing H1N1 antigenic eras over the past 100 years. Even though HAI titers to novel 2009 H1N1 and the 1918 H1N1 influenza viruses were positively associated, the association was far from perfect, particularly for the older and younger age groups. Conclusions/Significance: Therefore, there may be a complex set of immune responses that are retained in people infected with seasonal H1N1 that can contribute to the reduced rates of H1N1 influenza infection in older populations. © 2012 Carter et al
The state of the Martian climate
60°N was +2.0°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes
