Properties of hierarchically forming star clusters
We undertake a systematic analysis of the early (< 0.5 Myr) evolution of
clustering and the stellar initial mass function in turbulent fragmentation
simulations. These large scale simulations for the first time offer the
opportunity for a statistical analysis of IMF variations and correlations
between stellar properties and cluster richness. The typical evolutionary
scenario involves star formation in small-n clusters which then progressively
merge; the first stars to form are seeds of massive stars and achieve a
headstart in mass acquisition. These massive seeds end up in the cores of
clusters and a large fraction of new stars of lower mass is formed in the outer
parts of the clusters. The resulting clusters are therefore mass segregated at
an age of 0.5 Myr, although the signature of mass segregation is weakened
during mergers. We find that the resulting IMF has a smaller exponent
(alpha=1.8-2.2) than the Salpeter value (alpha=2.35). The IMFs in subclusters
are truncated at masses only somewhat larger than the most massive stars (which
depends on the richness of the cluster) and an universal upper mass limit of
150 Msun is ruled out. We also find that the simulations show signs of the
IGIMF effect proposed by Weidner & Kroupa, where the frequency of massive stars
is suppressed in the integrated IMF compared to the IMF in individual clusters.
We identify clusters through the use of a minimum spanning tree algorithm which
allows easy comparison between observational survey data and the predictions of
turbulent fragmentation models. In particular we present quantitative
predictions regarding properties such as cluster morphology, degree of mass
segregation, upper slope of the IMF and the relation between cluster richness

Protocol of trans-Tasman feasibility randomised controlled trial of the Younger Women's Wellness After Breast Cancer (YWWACP) lifestyle intervention.
BACKGROUND: Younger women (defined as those < 50 years who are likely pre-menopausal at time of diagnosis) with breast cancer often experience persistent treatment-related side effects that adversely affect their physical and psychological wellbeing. The Women's Wellness After Cancer Program (WWACP) was adapted and piloted in Australia to address these outcomes in younger women. The aims of this feasibility study are to determine (1) the potential to translate the Younger WWACP (YWWACP) intervention to a broader population base in Aotearoa/New Zealand and Australia, and (2) the potential for success of a larger, international, phase ÎÎÎ, randomised controlled trial. METHODS: This bi-national, randomised, single-blinded controlled trial involves two main study sites in Aotearoa/New Zealand (KĆwhai study) and Australia (EMERALD study). Young women aged 18 to 50 years who completed intensive treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy) for breast cancer in the previous 24 months are eligible. The potential to translate the YWWACP to women in these two populations will be assessed according to several feasibility outcomes. These include examining intervention accessibility, acceptability and uptake; intervention sustainability and adherence; the prevalence components of the intervention in the control group; intervention efficacy; participants' perception of measurement burden; the effectiveness of planned recruitment strategies; and trial methods and procedures. The studies collectively aim to enrol 60 participants in the intervention group and 60 participants in the control group (total = 120 participants). DISCUSSION: Ethical approval has been received from the Southern Health and Disability Ethics Committee (KĆwhai ref: 19/STH/215), and UnitingCare Human Research Ethics Committee (EMERALD ref: 202103). This study will provide important data on the feasibility of the refined YWWACP in the trans-Tasman context. This study will account for and harmonise cross-country differences to ensure the success of a proposed international grant application for a phase ÎÎÎ randomised controlled trial of this program to improve outcomes in younger women living with breast cancer. Serotonin tranporter methylation and response to cognitive behaviour therapy in children with anxiety disorders
Anxiety disorders that are the most commonly occurring psychiatric disorders in childhood, are associated with a range of social and educational impairments and often continue into adulthood. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment option for the majority of cases, although up to 35-45% of children do not achieve remission. Recent research suggests that some genetic variants may be associated with a more beneficial response to psychological therapy. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation work at the interface between genetic and environmental influences. Furthermore, epigenetic alterations at the serotonin transporter (SERT) promoter region have been associated with environmental influences such as stressful life experiences. In this study, we measured DNA methylation upstream of SERT in 116 children with an anxiety disorder, before and after receiving CBT. Change during treatment in percentage DNA methylation was significantly different in treatment responders vs nonresponders. This effect was driven by one CpG site in particular, at which responders increased in methylation, whereas nonresponders showed a decrease in DNA methylation. This is the first study to demonstrate differences in SERT methylation change in association with response to a purely psychological therapy. These findings confirm that biological changes occur alongside changes in symptomatology following a psychological therapy such as CBT
PICS-Ord: unlimited coding of ambiguous regions by pairwise identity and cost scores ordination
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We present a novel method to encode ambiguously aligned regions in fixed multiple sequence alignments by 'Pairwise Identity and Cost Scores Ordination' (PICS-Ord). The method works via ordination of sequence identity or cost scores matrices by means of Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA). After identification of ambiguous regions, the method computes pairwise distances as sequence identities or cost scores, ordinates the resulting distance matrix by means of PCoA, and encodes the principal coordinates as ordered integers. Three biological and 100 simulated datasets were used to assess the performance of the new method.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Including ambiguous regions coded by means of PICS-Ord increased topological accuracy, resolution, and bootstrap support in real biological and simulated datasets compared to the alternative of excluding such regions from the analysis a priori. In terms of accuracy, PICS-Ord performs equal to or better than previously available methods of ambiguous region coding (e.g., INAASE), with the advantage of a practically unlimited alignment size and increased analytical speed and the possibility of PICS-Ord scores to be analyzed together with DNA data in a partitioned maximum likelihood model.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Advantages of PICS-Ord over step matrix-based ambiguous region coding with INAASE include a practically unlimited number of OTUs and seamless integration of PICS-Ord codes into phylogenetic datasets, as well as the increased speed of phylogenetic analysis. Contrary to word- and frequency-based methods, PICS-Ord maintains the advantage of pairwise sequence alignment to derive distances, and the method is flexible with respect to the calculation of distance scores. In addition to distance and maximum parsimony, PICS-Ord codes can be analyzed in a Bayesian or maximum likelihood framework. RAxML (version 7.2.6 or higher that was developed for this study) allows up to 32-state ordered or unordered characters. A GTR, MK, or ORDERED model can be applied to analyse the PICS-Ord codes partition, with GTR performing slightly better than MK and ORDERED.</p> <p>Availability</p> <p>An implementation of the PICS-Ord algorithm is available from <url>http://scit.us/projects/ngila/wiki/PICS-Ord</url>. A highly efficient measure of mass segregation in star clusters
Investigations of mass segregation are of vital interest for the
understanding of the formation and dynamical evolution of stellar systems on a
wide range of spatial scales. Our method is based on the minimum spanning tree
(MST) that serves as a geometry-independent measure of concentration. Compared
to previous such approaches we obtain a significant refinement by using the
geometrical mean as an intermediate-pass. It allows the detection of mass
segregation with much higher confidence and for much lower degrees of mass
segregation than other approaches. The method shows in particular very clear
signatures even when applied to small subsets of the entire population. We
confirm with high significance strong mass segregation of the five most massive
stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Our method is the most sensitive
general measure of mass segregation so far and provides robust results for both
data from simulations and observations. As such it is ideally suited for
tracking mass segregation in young star clusters and to investigate the long
standing paradigm of primordial mass segregation by comparison of simulations

Impact Factor: outdated artefact or stepping-stone to journal certification?
A review of Garfield's journal impact factor and its specific implementation
as the Thomson Reuters Impact Factor reveals several weaknesses in this
commonly-used indicator of journal standing. Key limitations include the
mismatch between citing and cited documents, the deceptive display of three
decimals that belies the real precision, and the absence of confidence
intervals. These are minor issues that are easily amended and should be
corrected, but more substantive improvements are needed. There are indications
that the scientific community seeks and needs better certification of journal
procedures to improve the quality of published science. Comprehensive
certification of editorial and review procedures could help ensure adequate

Childrenâs Internal Attributions of Anxiety-Related Physical Symptoms: Age-Related Patterns and the Role of Cognitive Development and Anxiety Sensitivity
The present study examined age-related patterns in childrenâs anxiety-related interpretations and internal attributions of physical symptoms. A large sample of 388 children aged between 4 and 13Â years completed a vignette paradigm during which they had to explain the emotional response of the main character who experienced anxiety-related physical symptoms in a variety of daily situations. In addition, children completed measures of cognitive development and anxiety sensitivity. Results demonstrated that age, cognitive development, and anxiety sensitivity were all positively related to childrenâs ability to perceive physical symptoms as a signal of anxiety and making internal attributions. Further, while a substantial proportion of the younger children (i.e., <7Â years) were able to make a valid anxiety-related interpretation of a physical symptom, very few were capable of making an internal attribution, which means that children of this age lack the developmental prerequisites for applying physical symptoms-based theories of childhood anxiety
A new research agenda for managing socio-cultural integration
Post-acquisition socio-cultural integration has received increasing attention from both scholars and practitioners since the early 1990s. During the past decade, research has increasingly focused on emotions and identity in mergers and acquisitions. This chapter introduces the reader to the vibrant research field and its relevance. This section sets the scene for the book, which provides a deeper understanding of how emotionsâboth positive and negativeâas well as values and identity enable a deeper socio-cultural integration after a merger or acquisition, and how leadership plays a crucial role in making it all happen. This chapter also highlights how the Nordic approach to post-acquisition socio-cultural integration refers to a large community of Nordic academics focusing on the softer social and human side of acquisition, often relying on a huge variety of qualitative methods, and to Nordic companies that are not afraid of adopting a more collaborative approach to post-acquisition integration
