Report of the Working Group on the Composition of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays
For the first time a proper comparison of the average depth of shower maximum
() published by the Pierre Auger and Telescope Array Observatories
is presented. The distributions measured by the Pierre Auger
Observatory were fit using simulated events initiated by four primaries
(proton, helium, nitrogen and iron). The primary abundances which best describe
the Auger data were simulated through the Telescope Array (TA) Middle Drum (MD)
fluorescence and surface detector array. The simulated events were analyzed by
the TA Collaboration using the same procedure as applied to their data. The
result is a simulated version of the Auger data as it would be observed by TA.
This analysis allows a direct comparison of the evolution of with energy of both data sets. The
measured by TA-MD is consistent with a preliminary simulation of the Auger data
through the TA detector and the average difference between the two data sets

The current state-of-the-art of spinal cord imaging: methods.
A first-ever spinal cord imaging meeting was sponsored by the International Spinal Research Trust and the Wings for Life Foundation with the aim of identifying the current state-of-the-art of spinal cord imaging, the current greatest challenges, and greatest needs for future development. This meeting was attended by a small group of invited experts spanning all aspects of spinal cord imaging from basic research to clinical practice. The greatest current challenges for spinal cord imaging were identified as arising from the imaging environment itself; difficult imaging environment created by the bone surrounding the spinal canal, physiological motion of the cord and adjacent tissues, and small cross-sectional dimensions of the spinal cord, exacerbated by metallic implants often present in injured patients. Challenges were also identified as a result of a lack of "critical mass" of researchers taking on the development of spinal cord imaging, affecting both the rate of progress in the field, and the demand for equipment and software to manufacturers to produce the necessary tools. Here we define the current state-of-the-art of spinal cord imaging, discuss the underlying theory and challenges, and present the evidence for the current and potential power of these methods. In two review papers (part I and part II), we propose that the challenges can be overcome with advances in methods, improving availability and effectiveness of methods, and linking existing researchers to create the necessary scientific and clinical network to advance the rate of progress and impact of the research
Evaluation of the Impact of Social Collaborations on Sexual and Reproductive Health Knowledge
Introduction: Developments in technology, such as the popularity of mobile devices and social media outlets, have enhanced the ability of individuals to communicate. Currently, search engines allow for easy exploration of information related to every topic of interest. Our study purpose was to evaluate the impact of technological and social collaborations on sexual and reproductive health knowledge (SRHK).
Methods: A 50-item survey instrument, integrating factors of sociodemographics, number/type of social collaborations, technological communication use, and SRHK, was developed to assess familiarity with sexual and reproductive health perceptions. The survey was provided to consenting patients in an ambulatory, primary care setting. Data was coded and analyzed using IBM-SPSS. Statistical analysis included: Pearson correlation, t and Chi-squared tests. Statistical significance was established at p \u3c .05.
Results: A total of 75 patients completed the study, mean age 57.4 + 15.2 years, 87.7% female, 79.5% African American, 97.2% had an education level of High School or above, and 68.5% had incomes \u3c $ 50,000. The study group had a mean SRHK score of 9.0 + 4.3 on a scale of 0-18. The quantity of technological communications (p \u3c .001), as well as number of social collaborations (as measured by weekly visits with relatives, neighbors and friends), both, were positively associated with SRHK.
Conclusions: Our study indicates that amplified technological communications, together with increased social collaborations, may have a significant beneficial impact on SRHK, thereby enabling an improved awareness of sexual health among the participants. More research studies to advance these results are merited
Is the Toxicity of Salvage Prostatectomy Related to the Primary Prostate Cancer Therapy Received?
PURPOSE: To compare the toxicity profile and oncological outcome of salvage radical prostatectomy (SRP) following focal therapy (FT) versus SRP after radiation therapies (RT) - external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) or brachytherapy (BT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data concerning all men undergoing SRP for recurrent prostate cancer after either FT, EBRT or BT were retrospectively collected from 4 high volume surgical centres. The primary outcome measure of the study was toxicity of SRP characterized by any 30-day post-operative Clavien-Dindo complication rate, 12-month continence rate and 12-month potency rate. The secondary outcome was oncological outcome after SRP including positive margin rate and 12-month biochemical recurrence (BCR) rate. BCR was estimated using Kaplan-Meier methods and significant differences were calculated using a log rank test. Median follow-up time was 29.5 months. RESULTS: Between April 2007 and September 2018, 185 patients underwent SRP of which 95 had SRP after FT and 90 had SRP after RT, either EBRT or BT. SRP after RT was associated with a significantly higher 30-day Clavien-Dindo I-IV complication rate (34% vs 5%, p<0.001). At 12 months following surgery, patients undergoing SRP after FT had significantly better continence (SRP after FT:83% pad-free vs RT:49%) while potency outcomes were similar (FT:14% vs RT:11%). Men undergoing SRP after RT had a significantly higher stage and grade of disease together with a higher positive surgical margin rate (37% vs 13%, p=0.001). 3-year BCR after FT was 35% compared to 32% after RT, p=0.76. In multivariable analysis, men undergoing SRP after FT experienced a higher risk of BCR (HR 0.36 [0.18-0.82], p<0.005). CONCLUSIONS: This multicentre study demonstrates the toxicity of SRP in terms of perioperative complications and long-term urinary continence recovery is dependent on initial primary prostate cancer therapy received with men undergoing SRP after FT experiencing lower postoperative complication rates and better urinary continence outcomes
Cosmic-ray acceleration in supernova remnants: non-linear theory revised
A rapidly growing amount of evidences, mostly coming from the recent
gamma-ray observations of Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), is seriously
challenging our understanding of how particles are accelerated at fast shocks.
The cosmic-ray (CR) spectra required to account for the observed phenomenology
are in fact as steep as , i.e., steeper than the
test-particle prediction of first-order Fermi acceleration, and significantly
steeper than what expected in a more refined non-linear theory of diffusive
shock acceleration. By accounting for the dynamical back-reaction of the
non-thermal particles, such a theory in fact predicts that the more efficient
the particle acceleration, the flatter the CR spectrum. In this work we put
forward a self-consistent scenario in which the account for the magnetic field
amplification induced by CR streaming produces the conditions for reversing
such a trend, allowing --- at the same time --- for rather steep spectra and CR
acceleration efficiencies (about 20%) consistent with the hypothesis that SNRs
are the sources of Galactic CRs. In particular, we quantitatively work out the
details of instantaneous and cumulative CR spectra during the evolution of a
typical SNR, also stressing the implications of the observed levels of
magnetization on both the expected maximum energy and the predicted CR
acceleration efficiency. The latter naturally turns out to saturate around
10-30%, almost independently of the fraction of particles injected into the
acceleration process as long as this fraction is larger than about .Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in JCA
Search for Anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays with the Telescope Array Experiment
We study the anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) events
collected by the Telescope Array (TA) detector in the first 40 months of
operation. Following earlier studies, we examine event sets with energy
thresholds of 10 EeV, 40 EeV, and 57 EeV. We find that the distributions of the
events in right ascension and declination are compatible with an isotropic
distribution in all three sets. We then compare with previously reported
clustering of the UHECR events at small angular scales. No significant
clustering is found in the TA data. We then check the events with E>57 EeV for
correlations with nearby active galactic nuclei. No significant correlation is
found. Finally, we examine all three sets for correlations with the large-scale
structure of the Universe. We find that the two higher-energy sets are
compatible with both an isotropic distribution and the hypothesis that UHECR
sources follow the matter distribution of the Universe (the LSS hypothesis),
while the event set with E>10 EeV is compatible with isotropy and is not
compatible with the LSS hypothesis at 95% CL unless large deflection angles are
also assumed. We show that accounting for UHECR deflections in a realistic
model of the Galactic magnetic field can make this set compatible with the LSS

A NORTHERN SKY SURVEY FOR POINT-LIKE SOURCES OF EeV NEUTRAL PARTICLES WITH THE TELESCOPE ARRAY EXPERIMENT
We report on the search for steady point-like sources of neutral particles around 10(18) eV between 2008 and 2013 May with the scintillator SD of the Telescope Array experiment. We found overall no significant point-like excess above 0.5 EeV in the northern sky. Subsequently, we also searched for coincidence with the Fermi bright Galactic sources. No significant coincidence was found within the statistical uncertainty. Hence, we set an upper limit on the neutron flux that corresponds to an averaged flux of 0.07 km(-2) yr(-1) for E > 1 EeV in the northern sky at the 95% confidence level. This is the most stringent flux upper limit in a northern sky survey assuming point-like sources. The upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the neutron flux from Cygnus X-3 is also set to 0.2 km(-2) yr(-1) for E > 0.5 EeV. Measurement of the proton-air cross section with Telescope Array's Middle Drum detector and surface array in hybrid mode
In this work we are reporting on the measurement of the proton-air inelastic cross section sigma(inel)(p-air) using the Telescope Array detector. Based on the measurement of the sigma(inel)(p-air), the proton-proton cross section sigma(p-p) value is also determined at root s = 95(-8)(+5) TeV. Detecting cosmic ray events at ultrahigh energies with the Telescope Array enables us to study this fundamental parameter that we are otherwise unable to access with particle accelerators. The data used in this report are the hybrid events observed by the Middle Drum fluorescence detector together with the surface array detector collected over five years. The value of the sigma(inel)(p-air) is found to be equal to 567.0 +/- 70.5[Stat](-25)(+29)[Sys] mb. The total proton-proton cross section is subsequently inferred from Glauber formalism and the Block, Halzen and Stanev QCD inspired fit and is found to be equal to 170(-44)(+48)[Stat](-17)(+19)[Sys] mb.open20
Quantitative PCR of ear discharge from Indigenous Australian children with acute otitis media with perforation supports a role for Alloiococcus otitidis as a secondary pathogen
Otitis media is endemic in remote Indigenous communities of Australia’s Northern Territory. Alloiococcus otitidis is an outer ear commensal and putative middle ear pathogen that has not previously been described in acute otitis media (AOM) in this population.
