Constraining Quark Transversity through Collins Asymmetry Measurements at STAR
The quark transversity distributions are accessible via measurements of the
azimuthal distribution of charged pions inside jets produced in collisions of
transversely polarized protons. The STAR Detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion
Collider is capable of full jet reconstruction and charged pion identification
in the mid-rapidity region. This proceeding presents the first results of the
Collins moment of leading charged pions in jets reconstructed from 2.2 pb-1 of

Information Acquisition and Price Discrimination
We consider a Hotelling model of price competition where firms may acquire costly information regarding the preferences (i.e. “location”) of customers. By purchasing additional information, a firm has a finer partition regarding customer preferences, and its pricing decisions must be measurable with respect to this partition. If information acquisition decisions are common knowledge at the point where firms compete via prices, we show that a pure strategy subgame perfect equilibrium exists, and that there is “excess information acquisition” from the point of view of the firms. If information acquisition decisions are private information, a pure strategy equilibrium fails to exist. We compute a mixed strategy equilibrium for a range of parameter values.Information Acquisition; Price Discrimination
Aging behavior of Au-based ohmic contacts to GaAs
Gold based alloys, commonly used as ohmic contacts for solar cells, are known to react readily with GaAs. It is shown that the contact interaction with the underlying GaAs can continue even at room temperature upon aging, altering both the electrical characteristics of the contacts and the nearby pn junction. Au-Ge-Ni as-deposited (no heat treatment) contacts made to thin emitter (0.15 micrometer) GaAs diodes have shown severe shunting of the pn junction upon aging for several months at room temperature. The heat-treated contacts, despite showing degradation in contact resistance did not affect the underlying pn junction. Au-Zn-Au contacts to p-GaAs emitter (0.2 micrometer) diodes, however, showed slight improvement in contact resistance upon 200 C isothermal annealing for several months, without degrading the pn junction. The effect of aging on electrical characteristics of the as-deposited and heat-treated contacts and the nearby pn junction, as well as on the surface morphology of the contacts are presented
Sampling and Reconstruction of Shapes with Algebraic Boundaries
We present a sampling theory for a class of binary images with finite rate of
innovation (FRI). Every image in our model is the restriction of
\mathds{1}_{\{p\leq0\}} to the image plane, where \mathds{1} denotes the
indicator function and is some real bivariate polynomial. This particularly
means that the boundaries in the image form a subset of an algebraic curve with
the implicit polynomial . We show that the image parameters --i.e., the
polynomial coefficients-- satisfy a set of linear annihilation equations with
the coefficients being the image moments. The inherent sensitivity of the
moments to noise makes the reconstruction process numerically unstable and
narrows the choice of the sampling kernels to polynomial reproducing kernels.
As a remedy to these problems, we replace conventional moments with more stable
\emph{generalized moments} that are adjusted to the given sampling kernel. The
benefits are threefold: (1) it relaxes the requirements on the sampling
kernels, (2) produces annihilation equations that are robust at numerical
precision, and (3) extends the results to images with unbounded boundaries. We
further reduce the sensitivity of the reconstruction process to noise by taking
into account the sign of the polynomial at certain points, and sequentially
enforcing measurement consistency. We consider various numerical experiments to
demonstrate the performance of our algorithm in reconstructing binary images,
including low to moderate noise levels and a range of realistic sampling

Poisson multi-Bernoulli conjugate prior for multiple extended object filtering
This paper presents a Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) conjugate prior
for multiple extended object filtering. A Poisson point process is used to
describe the existence of yet undetected targets, while a multi-Bernoulli
mixture describes the distribution of the targets that have been detected. The
prediction and update equations are presented for the standard transition
density and measurement likelihood. Both the prediction and the update preserve
the PMBM form of the density, and in this sense the PMBM density is a conjugate
prior. However, the unknown data associations lead to an intractably large
number of terms in the PMBM density, and approximations are necessary for
tractability. A gamma Gaussian inverse Wishart implementation is presented,
along with methods to handle the data association problem. A simulation study
shows that the extended target PMBM filter performs well in comparison to the
extended target d-GLMB and LMB filters. An experiment with Lidar data
illustrates the benefit of tracking both detected and undetected targets
Left Ventricular Pacing In Patients With Congestive Heart Failure
Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) using biventricular (BIV) pacing has proved its effectiveness to correct myocardial asynchrony and improve clinical status of patients with severe congestive heart failure (CHF) and widened QRS. Despite a different effect on left ventricular electrical dispersion, left univentricular (LV) pacing is able to achieve the same mechanical synchronisation as BIV pacing in experimental studies and in humans. This results in clinical benefits of LV pacing at mid-term follow-up, with significant improvement in functional class, quality of life and exercise tolerance at the same extent as those observed with BIV stimulation in non randomised studies. Furthermore these benefits are obtained at lesser costs and with conventional dual-chamber devices. However, LV pacing has to be compared to BIV pacing in randomised trials before being definitely considered as a cost-effective alternative to BIV pacing
