    Get PDF

The publication of Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo's Amadis de Gaula in 1508 initiates one of the most important theoretical literary debates in the spanish Literature. Writers, critics, moralists and Church members either passionately attack or defend the beginning of a new way of treating the old chivalric theme in a long, prose narration. Eight years later, 1516, Ludovico's Orlando Furioso is published in Italy. Ludovico's is an ironic, long romanzo, based on the new literary models created by the publication of Mateo Boiardo's unconcluded Orlando Innamorato in 1494. Although different problems are suggested by these two works, they both contributed to the definition and consolidation of the Romance, a generic form linked to the development and consolidation of the modern novel.

Family disruption in the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights

Comunicação apresentada na 47th Annual Conference of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts – Traversing the trail of alienation: mountains of emotion, rocky relationships, mile high conflict, Denver, Colorado, 5th June 2010This workshop aims to analyse the principles drawn out by the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights in regard to family disruption matters, such as custody and access, children taken into public care and the right to respect for family life of prisoners and immigrants. The right to respect for family life, within the meaning of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, requires a positive obligation of Member States to act in a manner calculated to allow family ties to develop normally. Furthermore, as the Strasbourg Court often stresses, the mutual enjoyment by parents and children of each other’s company constitutes a fundamental element of family life and thus one of the objectives pursued by Article 8. Therefore, the restriction or non-enforcement of custody and visiting rights, as well as the compulsory taking of children into public care and the implementation of care measures, or the limitation or prohibition of visits from family members to prisoners, or even the refusal of family reunification of immigrants, represent an interference with the right to respect for family life under Article 8. In this workshop, we intend to study under which grounds, according to this Court, Member States may legitimately interfere with the enjoyment of this right. This case-law analysis will allow us to conclude, e.g.¸ that, although a wide margin of appreciation may be granted to Member States in this field, the respect for family life will not be considered to be violated if parents’ procedural rights are safeguarded, if good faith efforts to enforce access arrangements are made, if measures of public care are taken with a view to the reunification of the family and if a fair balance between the conflicting interests is made

Con el presente trabajo pretendemos definir claramente dichos conceptos al tiempo que intentamos proponer algunos caminos válidos para el análisis temático de las obras literarias en el ámbito de la Literatura Comparada, como son los métodos derivados de Psicoanálisis o de la Poética de lo Imaginario._________________________________Any handbook dealing with theoretical aspects of Comparative Literature must contain a chapter on Thematology, that is, the branch of Comparative Literature which analyzes themes and plots of literary texts with regard to their workings within the text itself as well as their presence in other works of art dated prior to or after the text in question. Despite its central place in the study of Comparative Literature, thematology meets with several imposing difficulties, the foremost being an enormous number of terms and concepts applied in the field. This article sets out to define these concepts, while also outlining valid proposal for the use of thematic analysis in Comparative Literature, such as those based on psychoanalysis and the poetics of the Imaginary

Production and characterization of electrospun composite fibers: confinement of thermosensitive microgels

    Get PDF
Materials engineering focuses on the assembly of materials´ properties to design new products with the best performance. By using sub-micrometer size materials in the production of composites, it is possible to obtain objects with properties that none of their compounds show individually. Once three-dimensional materials can be easily customized to obtain desired properties, much interest has been paid to nanostructured poly-mers in order to build biocompatible devices. Over the past years, the thermosensitive microgels have become more common in the framework of bio-materials with potential applicability in therapy and/or diagnostics. In addition, high aspect ratio biopolymers fibers have been produced using the cost-effective method called electrospinning. Taking advantage of both microgels and electrospun fibers, surfaces with enhanced functionalities can be obtained and, therefore employed in a wide range of applications. This dissertation reports on the confinement of stimuli-responsive microgels through the colloidal electro-spinning process. The process mainly depends on the composition, properties and patterning of the precur-sor materials within the polymer jet. Microgels as well as the electrospun non-woven mats were investigated to correlate the starting materials with the final morphology of the composite fibers. PNIPAAm and PNIPAAm/Chitosan thermosensitive microgels with different compositions were obtained via surfactant free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) and characterized in terms of chemical structure, morphology, thermal sta-bility, swelling properties and thermosensitivity. Finally, the colloidal electrospinning method was carried out from spinning solutions composed of the stable microgel dispersions (up to a concentration of about 35 wt. % microgels) and a polymer solution of PEO/water/ethanol mixture acting as fiber template solution. The confinement of microgels was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The electrospinning process was statistically analysed providing the optimum set of parameters aimed to minimize the fiber diameter, which give rise to electrospun nanofibers of PNIPAAm microgels/PEO with a mean fiber diameter of 63 ± 25 nm

Media and Misinformation in Times of COVID-19: How People Informed Themselves in the Days Following the Portuguese Declaration of the State of Emergency

This study takes as a starting point the importance and dependence of the media to obtain information about the pandemic. The dependency theory of the media system was developed in the 1970s when mass media were the dominant source of information. Today, at a time when media choices have become abundant, studies are needed to understand the phenomenon of media dependence in light of new dimensions made important by the transformations that have taken place in the social and media fields—where the coexistence of mass media with social media platforms stands out. As large-scale crises rarely occur and the media environment changes rapidly, it is important to analyze how media dependence relates to choose and trust in different media (traditional media vs. social media) in times of crisis. Several questions arise. What is the trust attributed by individuals to social media as sources of information about COVID-19? How well informed are the individuals who choose these sources as the main sources of information? From a questionnaire administered to 244 individuals in Portugal, during the first week of the state of emergency (March 2020), this research seeks to identify how people gained access to information about COVID-19, how they acted critically towards the various sources and how they assess the reliability of different media. Finally, it analyzes the association between the type of medium chosen and adherence to misinformation content about the virus. The results reveal the existence of a phenomenon of dependence on the media, with a strong exposure (both active and accidental) to informative content, with conventional media being privileged as the main source, and positively distinguished in terms of confidence. Finally, a statistically significant association of a positive sign was identified between the use of social media as the main source and the acceptance of misinformation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Portuguese Architecture in Transit(ion)

    Get PDF
In the final years of the Estado Novo regime (1933–1974), the Amsterdam Town Hall International Competition of 1967 presents the opportunity for seven teams of Portuguese architects to confront their own reality and rehearse distinct visions of building and city. From a national context, politically and geographically distant from the heart of the disciplinary debate of the 1960s, the proposals submitted set the terms on which Portugal competes in Amsterdam, revealing in the diversity of approaches and experiences forwarded by this new generation of architects the vitality of Portuguese architecture on its path to internationalisation. This article retraces the Portuguese participation in the Amsterdam Town Hall Competition to refute the generalised idea of cultural mismatch with the European scene of the time and assesses the impact of this particular event on the transition of Portuguese architecture to international recognition, an impact that Portuguese architecture historiography has to this day completely ignored

Purpose: This paper analyzes trust in superiors as an informal control mechanism to reduce budgetary slack. We examine how relationships between trust of subordinates in their superiors and economic incentive reduce the tendency of subordinates to create budgetary slack.Methodology: An experiment was designed with participants who play the role of manager or executive alternativelyFindings: Results show that the introduction of an economic incentive does not affect the relationship between trust and budgetary slack.Implications/limitations: This study will let organizations to further the budgeting process by using informal mechanism, such as trust, as a complement to traditional mechanism (e.g. monetary/ economic incentives). This enhances the effectiveness of the organization’s actions and policies. Originality/Value: The findings of this study complement the results of previous studies on how trust is related to financial and non-financial performance criteria
