    Ultrahigh field MRI determination of water diffusion rates in ex vivo human lenses of different age

    BACKGROUND: The development of presbyopia is correlated with increased lens stiffness. To reveal structural changes with age, ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging (UHF-MRI) was used to analyze water diffusion in differently aged human lenses ex vivo. METHODS: After enucleation lens extractions were performed. Lenses were photographed, weighed, and embedded in 0.5% agarose dissolved in culture medium. UHF-MRI was conducted to analyze anatomical characteristics of the lens using T2-weighted Turbo-RARE imaging and to obtain apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) measurements. A Gaussian fit routine was used to examine the ADC histograms. RESULTS: An age-dependent increase in lens wet weight, lens thickness, and lens diameter was found (P<0.001). T2-weighted images revealed a hyperintense lens cortex and a gradually negative gradient in signal intensity towards the nucleus. ADC histograms of the lens showed bimodal distributions (lower ADC values mainly located in the nucleus and higher ADC values mainly located in the cortex), which did not change significantly with age [βPeak1=1.96E-7 (-20E-7, 10E-7), P=0.804 or βPeak2=15.4E-7 (-10E-7, 40E-7), P=0.276; respectively]. CONCLUSIONS: Clinically relevant age dependent lens hardening is probably not correlated with ADC changes within the nucleus, which could be confirmed by further measurements

    Post-mortem volatiles of vertebrate tissue

    Volatile emission during vertebrate decay is a complex process that is understood incompletely. It depends on many factors. The main factor is the metabolism of the microbial species present inside and on the vertebrate. In this review, we combine the results from studies on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected during this decay process and those on the biochemical formation of VOCs in order to improve our understanding of the decay process. Micro-organisms are the main producers of VOCs, which are by- or end-products of microbial metabolism. Many microbes are already present inside and on a vertebrate, and these can initiate microbial decay. In addition, micro-organisms from the environment colonize the cadaver. The composition of microbial communities is complex, and communities of different species interact with each other in succession. In comparison to the complexity of the decay process, the resulting volatile pattern does show some consistency. Therefore, the possibility of an existence of a time-dependent core volatile pattern, which could be used for applications in areas such as forensics or food science, is discussed. Possible microbial interactions that might alter the process of decay are highlighted

    Presbyopia:Effectiveness of correction strategies

    Presbyopia is a global problem affecting over a billion people worldwide. The prevalence of unmanaged presbyopia is as high as 50% of those over 50 years of age in developing world populations due to a lack of awareness and accessibility to affordable treatment, and is even as high as 34% in developed countries. Definitions of presbyopia are inconsistent and varied, so we propose a redefinition that states “presbyopia occurs when the physiologically normal age-related reduction in the eye's focusing range reaches a point, when optimally corrected for distance vision, that the clarity of vision at near is insufficient to satisfy an individual's requirements”. Presbyopia is inevitable if one lives long enough, but intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors including cigarette smoking, pregnancy history, hyperopic or astigmatic refractive error, ultraviolet radiation, female sex (although accommodation is similar to males), hotter climates and some medical conditions such as diabetes can accelerate the onset of presbyopic symptoms. Whilst clinicians can ameliorate the symptoms of presbyopia with near vision spectacle correction, bifocal and progressive spectacle lenses, monovision, translating or multifocal contact lenses, monovision, extended depth of focus, multifocal (refractive, diffractive and asymmetric designs) or ‘accommodating’ intraocular lenses, corneal inlays, scleral expansion, laser refractive surgery (corneal monovision, corneal shrinkage, corneal multifocal profiles and lenticular softening), pharmacologic agents, and electro-stimulation of the ciliary muscle, none fully overcome presbyopia in all patients.     Endocrinologic, neurologic, and visual morbidity after treatment for craniopharyngioma

    Craniopharyngiomas are locally aggressive tumors which typically are focused in the sellar and suprasellar region near a number of critical neural and vascular structures mediating endocrinologic, behavioral, and visual functions. The present study aims to summarize and compare the published literature regarding morbidity resulting from treatment of craniopharyngioma. We performed a comprehensive search of the published English language literature to identify studies publishing outcome data of patients undergoing surgery for craniopharyngioma. Comparisons of the rates of endocrine, vascular, neurological, and visual complications were performed using Pearson’s chi-squared test, and covariates of interest were fitted into a multivariate logistic regression model. In our data set, 540 patients underwent surgical resection of their tumor. 138 patients received biopsy alone followed by some form of radiotherapy. Mean overall follow-up for all patients in these studies was 54 ± 1.8 months. The overall rate of new endocrinopathy for all patients undergoing surgical resection of their mass was 37% (95% CI = 33–41). Patients receiving GTR had over 2.5 times the rate of developing at least one endocrinopathy compared to patients receiving STR alone or STR + XRT (52 vs. 19 vs. 20%, χ2P < 0.00001). On multivariate analysis, GTR conferred a significant increase in the risk of endocrinopathy compared to STR + XRT (OR = 3.45, 95% CI = 2.05–5.81, P < 0.00001), after controlling for study size and the presence of significant hypothalamic involvement. There was a statistical trend towards worse visual outcomes in patients receiving XRT after STR compared to GTR or STR alone (GTR = 3.5% vs. STR 2.1% vs. STR + XRT 6.4%, P = 0.11). Given the difficulty in obtaining class 1 data regarding the treatment of this tumor, this study can serve as an estimate of expected outcomes for these patients, and guide decision making until these data are available

The weeds should be at least 10 taller than the crop. Roundup is the herbicide of choice for wiper applications in sorghum and soybeans. A conce~tration of 25% Roundup in water is used for control of broadleaf and grass weeds. Shattercane and volunteer corn are ve ry susceptible to Roundup. Roundup concentrations of 20% work well on these plants. Lawn Care Under Stress Conditions The heat and drought of the past few weeks has put stress on all plant materials. The best weed prevention in your lawn is to follow cultural practices that keep the lawn thick and healthy. water plays a very important part in growth and cooling of the plant through transpiration. To promote deeper rooting, it is best to water deeply and infrequently. Early morning is the best time to water since the air is relatively calm and evaporative loss is lower. Under extreme drought conditions, it may be necessary to let the turfgrass plant go into a temporary state of dormancy. If you\u27ve been irrigating regularly, the plant must go through a gradual hardening-off period with judicial fertilization (use of slow release fertilizers if required), more frequent mowing at a greater mowing height, and a reduction in water applied. Do not stop irrigating the plant all at once, or you may cause extensive plant and root damage. The plant I s system must have time to slow down and convert energy that was used for growth into carbohydrate reserves to use while it is in a dormant state. Dry Weather and Weed Control Crops as well as weeds are under stress in dry conditions. Cultivation or the application of an herbicide ·can add to the stress on the crop. With low weed numbers and stressed crops it may be better to tolerate a few weeds or remove them by hand rather than cultivating or spraying
