    First case of degenerative mucinotic mural folliculitis in Brazil

    The purpose of this report is to describe the first case of degenerative mucinotic mural folliculitis (DMMF) in Brazil. This dermathopathy has been described as a rare cause of alopecia and hyperkeratosis in cats. Severe forms have been linked to infection with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). A 10-year-old neutered male Siamese cat was referred with a 40 days history of progressive hair loss. The cat had initial alopecia on the head, subsequently spreading to the neck, torso and limbs. The skin biopsy revealed degenerative mucinotic mural folliculitis. Distinct seropositive reaction against FIV. antigens was demonstrated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunohistochemistry. Therapeutic response to glucocorticoid medication, immunomodulators and antibiotics was poor and the patient died from undetermined causes. DMMF should be included in the differential diagnosis of feline exfoliative dermatitis and alopecia. Early diagnosis through histopathological and immunohistochemical tests is extremely important in determining the prognosis and the best treatment

    Peso ao nascer associado a fatores maternos/obstétricos e neonatais

    Objectives: Birth weight is a parameter used throughout the world to assess the health status of the newborn. Thus, the study aimed to analyze the association between birth weight and maternal and obstetric variables in a family health center in the interior of the state of Ceará, Brazil. Method: A quantitative and retrospective study was performed using secondary data from records of pregnant women attended at a family health center. The data analyzed were dated in the year 2016 and 2017. The research was submitted and approved by the Ethics Committee of the Vale do Acaraú State University - UVA (1.878.614). Results: A total of 64 pregnant women were attended during the study period. The birth weight ranged from 750g to 4,664g. There was a predominance of normal weight children born to mothers aged 21-30 years (42.18%). Women with partners (married, stable union) had higher rates with children of normal weight (56.25%). Regarding the number of prenatal consultations, those with 7 or more consultations obtained better results for the normal weight (67.18%). Children with normal birth weight (60.93%) of term pregnancies, from 37 to 41 weeks in duration, predominated. Conclusion: Considering low birth weight a dangerous and problematic parameter in the current scenario, it is important that prenatal and perinatal care be strengthened to prevent and effectively intervene in unfavorable outcomes for mother and child.Objetivo: O peso ao nascer é um parâmetro usado, em todo o mundo, para avaliar as condições de saúde do recém-nascido. Com isso, o estudo objetivou analisar a associação entre o peso ao nascer e as variáveis maternas e obstétricas em um centro de saúde da família do interior do estado do Ceará-Brasil. Metodologia: Foi realizado um estudo quantitativo e retrospectivo utilizando dados secundários a partir de prontuários de gestantes atendidas em um centro de saúde da família. Os dados analisados foram datados no ano de 2016 e 2017. A pesquisa foi submetida e aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética da Universidade Estadual Vale do Acaraú – UVA (1.878.614). Resultados: Foram atendidas um total de 64 gestantes durante o período de estudo. O peso dos nascidos variou de 750g a 4.664g. Houve um predomínio de crianças com peso normal nascidos de mães com idade entre 21-30 anos (42,18%). As mulheres com companheiro (casadas, união estável) foram registradas maiores taxas com filhos de peso normal (56,25%). Com relação ao número de consultas pré-natal, aquelas com realizaram 7 ou mais consultas obtiveram melhores resultados para o peso normal (67,18%). Predominou crianças com peso normal ao nascer (60,93%) de gestações à termo, de 37 a 41 semanas de duração. Conclusão: Considerando o baixo peso ao nascer um parâmetro perigoso e problemático no cenário atual, é importante que haja fortalecimento dos cuidados pré-natais e perinatais para prevenir e intervir, de forma eficaz, em resultados desfavoráveis para mãe e filho

     A qualidade de  vida de pacientes vivendo com HIV/AIDS é essencial, tendo em vista o caso específico dos adolescentes é ainda mais importante porque o jovem além de lidar com a resistência e a aceitação da doença, deve também enfrentar os conflitos da puberdade.O presente trabalho tem como objetivo realizar uma revisão integrativa em relação a qualidade de vida dos pacientes com HIV. Trata-se de um estudo de revisão integrativa realizado no período de 2016 a 2017, utilizando-se o banco de dados Medline e Lilacs. Apesar do impacto da infecção pelo HIV/AIDS na saúde psicológica e nas relações sociais dos indivíduos infectados, assim como no domínio físico, o uso da TARV provocou consequências positivas na saúde psicológica, proporcionando a desconstrução da ideia de morte advinda ao diagnóstico de portador do HIV/AIDS e a construção de melhores perspectivas de vida. A adesão ao tratamento em HIV/AIDS está relacionada a um aumento da sobrevida e de sua qualidade. Porém deve-se respeitar a posição pessoal do portador para fazer ou não o tratamento

    Os distúrbios hidroeletrolíticos são eventos comumente observados na prática médica, inclusive em situações de emergência, podendo representar risco de vida ou possibilidade de sequelas para o paciente a depender da magnitude do caso. Independentemente da etiologia, a desidratação tem sua importância definida pela intensidade das perdas líquidas e pela proporção de perdas salinas em relação à perda de água. Isto evidencia a importância de se avaliar corretamente o quadro para se desenvolver um tratamento adequado. Este estudo tem como objetivo explorar o tema das repercussões e manejo de distúrbios hidroeletrolíticos nos pacientes graves a partir de uma revisão sistemática com meta análise com o emprego das palavras chave “unidade de terapia intensiva”, “gerenciamento hidroeletrolítico”, “distúrbios hidroeletrolíticos” e “controle de líquidos e eletrólitos” nos bancos de dados PubMed, BVS, Lilacs, Medline e Scielo objetivando acessar artigos publicados entre 2015 e 2022. A equipe de enfermagem está diretamente responsável pelo manejo de pacientes de alta complexidade, o que pode envolver casos que exigem o gerenciamento hidroeletrolítico, isto requer um conhecimento aprofundado dos mecanismos envolvidos no metabolismo da água e dos eletrólitos. O monitoramento diário da função renal pela equipe de enfermagem é um cuidado importante para se evitar o quadro de insuficiência renal aguda

    NEOTROPICAL ALIEN MAMMALS: a data set of occurrence and abundance of alien mammals in the Neotropics

    Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into the Neotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced records on alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 species belonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Florida in the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 countries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g., Callithrix sp., Myocastor coypus, Nasua nasua) considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The most numerous species in terms of records are from Bos sp. (n = 37,782), Sus scrofa (n = 6,730), and Canis familiaris (n = 10,084); 17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caffer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). Primates have the highest number of species in the data set (n = 20 species), partly because of uncertainties regarding taxonomic identification of the genera Callithrix, which includes the species Callithrix aurita, Callithrix flaviceps, Callithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix jacchus, Callithrix kuhlii, Callithrix penicillata, and their hybrids. This unique data set will be a valuable source of information on invasion risk assessments, biodiversity redistribution and conservation-related research. There are no copyright restrictions.     NEOTROPICAL XENARTHRANS: a data set of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics

    Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set.     NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

    Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restriction for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of the information used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data
