Postsecondary Experiences Of Title I High School Graduates Who Were At-Risk Students Of Low Socioeconomic Status: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of high school graduates who were at-risk students (ARS) of low socioeconomic status (SES) who completed the state standards-based college and career readiness (CCR) curriculum at Title I high schools. For the purposes of this study, ARS of low SES were generally defined as students of low-income households with at least one parents failing to complete high school or a postsecondary degree program. CCR is defined as the level of preparedness for postsecondary schools and workforce settings. A Title I school is defined as a school that receives additional federal funding for the purpose of equalizing education for students of low SES. The theory that guided this study was Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which proposes that human development is affected by a combination of influences from different areas of an individual’s ecological environment. This study occurred in the state of Georgia with 10 participants. Data were gathered through individual semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and written response prompts, which were then analyzed and synthesized into similar themes experienced by the participants. Three major themes and eight subthemes were identified from the analysis of the participant experiences. The major themes were preparedness for college, preparedness for the workforce, and high school environment. Additional research is required to continue exploring the impact of the CCR curriculum of Title I high schools on the postsecondary outcomes of students of low SES, particularly in relation to their preparedness for postsecondary settings and financial literacy

The life of a book: British Library manuscript additional 35157 in historical context

This dissertation is an investigation into the social history of British Library Manuscript Additional 35157 (hereafter Add.35157), which is a late fourteenth-century copy of William Langland's alliterative poem Piers Plowman. Part one contains the text of the dissertation. In chapter 1 a general outline of the dissertation is provided and some bibliographical issues relating to the identification of Add.35157 are discussed. Chapter 2 proposes that the knowledge of a manuscript's provenance is itself a legitimate goal of research. Chapter 2 also provides a sample exercise in manuscript research using a copy of John Lydgate's poem Life of Our Lady from the University of Glasgow's Hunterian Collection. Chapter 3 forwards a classification system for manuscript marginalia and explains how some of the classification arose. Chapter 4 discusses issues related to the codicology of Add.35157, suggests a new date for the manuscript's construction, discusses the work of its scribes and provides several new catalogue descriptions of the manuscript. Chapters 5 through 8 analyse the contributions and detail the biographies of four of Add.35157's owners or commentators. Chapter 9 concludes that there is much to be learned from the continued study of the social history of medieval manuscripts. Part two comprises fourteen appendices, includes an edition of Add.35157's marginal supply, surveys of its dialect, transcriptions of its text and reproductions of selected folios

Curation cost exchange platform

This demonstration proposal describes the Curation Cost Exchange platform (CCEx), a web application that allows organizations to introduce, analyse, share and compare the cost of their digital curation activities. It is also a central hub for digital curation costing related information; and is a social platform that brings together organizations with the same problems and allows sharing of experiences, good practices and know-how. The CCEx is an output of the 4C Project (a Collaboration Clarify the Costs of Curation) and the relationship of the CCEx to other 4C Project outputs will also be briefly described.This work was co-funded by KEEP SOLUTION

Distribution of Macrobenthic Fauna of Soft Substrata in Swartkops Estuary, with Observations On the Effects of Floods

The quantitative distribution of the macrofauna inhabiting soft substrata in the Swartkops estuary has been studied in relation to the prevailing abiotic and biotic factors. The most important factors limiting macrobenthic distribution appear to be substrate and competition between communities, while salinity plays only a small rale. Four major communities have been recognized, each one dominating one reach of the estuary and a minor community dominating the silty heads of creeks. These communities are respectively a Callianassa community, an Upogebta community, a bivalve community and another Callianassa community as one proceeds from the mouth to the upper reaches. The creek community is dominated by four crustaceans and a goby. Biomass values have been recorded and related to the amounts of available food. The effects of floods on the fauna have also been monitored
