Political economy of oil production from 1850s to 1974
A study of the oil industry in its modern development from the 1850s to 1973. During this period the industry underwent significant changes in terms of its productive expansion, the diversity of its products, its role in general production, its corporate organisation and in terms of its significance to the very reproduction of advanced societies. The examination of the oil industry focuses on a political economy of its historical expansion. The thesis uses a Marxist theoretical framework to examine issues related to oil production as well as synthesising the elemental features of oil production into a structured conceptual model of the oil industry. The thesis divides the analysis of oil between chapters dealing with economic and political concerns in the context of historic epochs. The economic components of the thesis deal with the capitalist development of oil, its relationship with other sectors of production and consumption and an assessment of its role in economic growth as a whole. This provides the basis for the subsequent politically focused analyses. The political chapters deal with two primary issues, including the state response to the monopolisation of the oil industry and the effect of the expanding importance of oil on political relations. The analysis of the monopolisation of the oil industry provides an opportunity to study the relationship between the state in a regulatory function and the subsequent constraint on oil industry autonomy. The study of interstate relations focuses in turn on the effect of expanding oil production on the economic interests of states, in their support for the reproduction of capital in their domains
Status of Grey Leaf Spot Disease In Kenyan Maize Production Ecosystems
Grey leaf spot disease (GLS), Cercospora zeae-maydis, which has
previously been attributed to diverse pathogen species in other
countries, has become a serious biotic constraint to production of
maize ( Zea mays L.) in Kenya. It is necessary to determine the
distribution and aetiology of the disease across all the maize
production agro-ecologies in order to inform the development of
appropriate management strategies against the disease. Samples were
collected from maize growing areas in Kenya with GLS symptoms on maize
crops and other plants. On the basis of cultural and morphological
examinations, and restricted fragment length polymorphism and
taxon-specific PCR analyses, Cercospora zeae-maydis group II and C.
sorghi var. maydis were identified from typical GLS lesions on maize,
with the former being predominant (>96% of the cases) and
distributed throughout the country. The latter exhibited minor
incidence (<4%) in western Kenya. Nucleotide sequence analyses
further provided evidence that C. zeae-maydis group II and C. sorghi
var. maydis were distinct fungi.La maladie de t\ue2che grise de la feuille (GLS), Cercospora

A polarized beam splitter using an anisotropic medium slab
The propagation of electromagnetic waves in the anisotropic medium with a
single-sheeted hyperboloid dispersion relation is investigated. It is found
that in such an anisotropic medium E- and H-polarized waves have the same
dispersion relation, while E- and H-polarized waves exhibit opposite amphoteric
refraction characteristics. E- (or H-) polarized waves are positively refracted
whereas H- (or E-) polarized waves are negatively refracted at the interface
associated with the anisotropic medium. By suitably using the properties of
anomalous refraction in the anisotropic medium it is possible to realize a very
simple and very efficient beam splitter to route the light. It is shown that
the splitting angle and the splitting distance between E- and H- polarized beam
is the function of anisotropic parameters, incident angle and slab thickness.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Biochar versus hydrochar as growth media constituents for ornamental plant cultivation
[EN] Biochar and hydrochar have been proposed as novel materials for providing soilless growth media. However, much more knowledge is required before reliable advice can be given on the use of these materials for this purpose. Depending on the material and the technology applied (pyrolysis or hydrothermal carbonization), phytotoxicity and greenhouse gas emissions have been found for certain chars. In this study, our aim was to assess the feasibility of three chars as substrate constituents. We compared two biochars, one from forest waste and the other from olive mill waste, and a hydrochar from forest waste. We studied how chars affected substrate characteristics, plant performance, water economy and respiratory CO2 emission. Substrates containing biochar from forest waste showed the best characteristics, with good air/water relationships and adequate electrical conductivity. Those with biochar from olive mill waste were highly saline and, consequently, low quality. The substrates with hydrochar retained too much water and were poorly aerated, presenting high CO2 concentrations due to high respiratory activity. Plants performed well only when grown in substrates containing a maximum of 25 % biochar from forest waste or hydrochar. After analyzing the char characteristics, we concluded that biochar from forest waste could be safely used as a substrate constituent and is environmentally friendly when applied due to its low salinity and low CO2 emission. Toward an internally consistent astronomical distance scale
Accurate astronomical distance determination is crucial for all fields in
astrophysics, from Galactic to cosmological scales. Despite, or perhaps because
of, significant efforts to determine accurate distances, using a wide range of
methods, tracers, and techniques, an internally consistent astronomical
distance framework has not yet been established. We review current efforts to
homogenize the Local Group's distance framework, with particular emphasis on
the potential of RR Lyrae stars as distance indicators, and attempt to extend
this in an internally consistent manner to cosmological distances. Calibration
based on Type Ia supernovae and distance determinations based on gravitational
lensing represent particularly promising approaches. We provide a positive
outlook to improvements to the status quo expected from future surveys,
missions, and facilities. Astronomical distance determination has clearly

Measurement of the W+W-gamma Cross Section and Direct Limits on Anomalous Quartic Gauge Boson Couplings at LEP
The process e+e- -> W+W-gamma is analysed using the data collected with the
L3 detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of 188.6GeV, corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 176.8pb^-1. Based on a sample of 42 selected W+W-
candidates containing an isolated hard photon, the W+W-gamma cross section,
defined within phase-space cuts, is measured to be: sigma_WWgamma = 290 +/- 80
+/- 16 fb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. Including the
process e+e- -> nu nu gamma gamma, limits are derived on anomalous
contributions to the Standard Model quartic vertices W+W- gamma gamma and W+W-Z
gamma at 95% CL: -0.043 GeV^-2 < a_0/Lambda^2 < 0.043 GeV^-2 0.08 GeV^-2 <
a_c/Lambda^2 < 0.13 GeV^-2 0.41 GeV^-2 < a_n/Lambda^2 < 0.37 GeV^-2
Production of Single W Bosons at \sqrt{s}=189 GeV and Measurement of WWgamma Gauge Couplings
Single W boson production in electron-positron collisions is studied with the
L3 detector at LEP. The data sample collected at a centre-of-mass energy of
\sqrt{s} = 188.7GeV corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 176.4pb^-1.
Events with a single energetic lepton or two acoplanar hadronic jets are
selected. Within phase-space cuts, the total cross-section is measured to be
0.53 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.03 pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation.
Including our single W boson results obtained at lower \sqrt{s}, the WWgamma
gauge couplings kappa_gamma and lambda_gamma are determined to be kappa_gamma =
0.93 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.09 and lambda_gamma = -0.31 +0.68 -0.19 +/- 0.13
Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in e+e- Interactions at \sqrt{s} = 189 GeV
A search for the lightest neutral scalar and neutral pseudoscalar Higgs
bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is performed using 176.4
pb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by L3 at a center-of-mass energy of
189 GeV. No signal is observed, and the data are consistent with the expected
Standard Model background. Lower limits on the masses of the lightest neutral
scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons are given as a function of tan(beta).
Lower mass limits for tan(beta)>1 are set at the 95% confidence level to be m_h
> 77.1 GeV and m_A > 77.1 GeV
Measurement of Bose-Einstein Correlations in e+e- -> W+W- at root(s)=189GeV
We investigate Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in W-pair production at
root(s)=189GeV using the L3 detector at LEP. We observe BEC between particles
from a single W decay in good agreement with those from a light-quark Z decay
sample. We investigate their possible existence between particles coming from
different W's. No evidence for such inter-W BEC is found
