Comets, historical records and vedic literature
A verse in book I of Rigveda mentions a cosmic tree with rope-like aerial
roots held up in the sky. Such an imagery might have ensued from the appearance
of a comet having `tree stem' like tail, with branched out portions resembling
aerial roots. Interestingly enough, a comet referred to as `heavenly tree' was
seen in 162 BC, as reported by old Chinese records. Because of weak surface
gravity, cometary appendages may possibly assume strange shapes depending on
factors like rotation, structure and composition of the comet as well as solar
wind pattern. Varahamihira and Ballala Sena listed several comets having
strange forms as reported originally by ancient seers such as Parashara,
Vriddha Garga, Narada and Garga.
Mahabharata speaks of a mortal king Nahusha who ruled the heavens when Indra,
king of gods, went into hiding. Nahusha became luminous and egoistic after
absorbing radiance from gods and seers. When he kicked Agastya (southern star
Canopus), the latter cursed him to become a serpent and fall from the sky. We
posit arguments to surmise that this Mahabharata lore is a mythical recounting
of a cometary event wherein a comet crossed Ursa Major, moved southwards with
an elongated tail in the direction of Canopus and eventually went out of sight.
In order to check whether such a conjecture is feasible, a preliminary list of
comets (that could have or did come close to Canopus) drawn from various

Continuing mortality of vultures in India associated with illegal veterinary use of diclofenac and a potential threat from nimesulide
AbstractThe collapse of South Asia's Gyps vulture populations is attributable to the veterinary use of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) diclofenac. Vultures died after feeding on carcasses of recently-medicated animals. The governments of India, Nepal and Pakistan banned the veterinary use of diclofenac in 2006. We analysed results of 62 necropsies and 48 NSAID assays of liver and/or kidney for vultures of five species found dead in India between 2000 and 2012. Visceral gout and diclofenac were detected in vultures from nine states and three species: Gyps bengalensis, Gyps indicus and Gyps himalayensis. Visceral gout was found in every vulture carcass in which a measurable level of diclofenac was detected. Meloxicam, an NSAID of low toxicity to vultures, was found in two vultures and nimesulide in five vultures. Nimesulide at elevated tissue concentrations was associated with visceral gout in four of these cases, always without diclofenac, suggesting that nimesulide may have similar toxic effects to those of diclofenac. Residues of meloxicam on its own were never associated with visceral gout. The proportion of Gyps vultures found dead in the wild in India with measurable levels of diclofenac in their tissues showed a modest and non-significant decline since the ban on the veterinary use of diclofenac. The prevalence of visceral gout declined less, probably because some cases of visceral gout from 2008 onwards were associated with nimesulide rather than diclofenac. Comparison of Quantitative Techniques including Xpert MTB/RIF to Evaluate Mycobacterial Burden
Introduction: Accurate quantification of mycobacterial load is important for the evaluation of patient infectiousness, disease severity and monitoring treatment response in human and in-vitro laboratory models of disease. We hypothesized that newer techniques would perform as well as solid media culture to quantify mycobacterial burden in laboratory specimens. Methods: We compared the turn-around-time, detection-threshold, dynamic range, reproducibility, relative discriminative ability, of 4 mycobacterial load determination techniques: automated liquid culture (BACTEC-MGIT-960), [3H]-uracil incorporation assays, luciferase-reporter construct bioluminescence, and quantitative PCR(Xpert -MTB/RIF) using serial dilutions of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37RV. Mycobacterial colony-forming-units(CFU) using 7H10-Middlebrook solid media served as the reference standard. Results: All 4 assays correlated well with the reference standard, however, bioluminescence and uracil assays had a detection threshold ≥1×103 organisms. By contrast, BACTEC-MGIT-960 liquid culture, although only providing results in days, was user-friendly, had the lowest detection threshold (<10 organisms), the greatest discriminative ability (1 vs. 10 organisms; p = 0.02), and the best reproducibility (coefficient of variance of 2% vs. 38% compared to uracil incorporation; p = 0.02). Xpert-MTB/RIF correlated well with mycobacterial load, had a rapid turn-around-time (<2 hours), was user friendly, but had a detection limit of ~100 organisms. Conclusions: Choosing a technique to quantify mycobacterial burden for laboratory or clinical research depends on availability of resources and the question being addressed. Automated liquid culture has good discriminative ability and low detection threshold but results are only obtained in days. Xpert MTB/RIF provides rapid quantification of mycobacterial burden, but has a poorer discrimination and detection threshold
Study of equatorial plasma bubble during January to April 2012 over Kolhapur (India)
Over 53 nights of all sky airglow imager data collected during January-April 2012 from the low latitude station Kolhapur (16.68°N, 74.26°E; 10.6°N dip latitude) have been analyzed to study the F-region dynamics through the imaging of OI 630 nm emission line. The observed night airglow data were supported by the ionosonde measurements from Tirunelveli (8.7°N, 77.8°E; 0.51°N dip latitude). Well defined magnetic field aligned depletions were observed during the observation period. Out of 53 nights, 40 nights exhibited the occurrence of north-south aligned equatorial plasma bubbles. These plasma bubbles were found moving towards east with drift speed in range between 70 to 200 m s-1. We have analyzed the zonal drift velocity variation and relation of bubble occurrence with the base height of the ionosphere together with the effects of the geomagnetic Ap and solar flux F10.7 cm index in its first appearance
Pressure dependent electronic properties of MgO polymorphs: A first-principles study of Compton profiles and autocorrelation functions
The first-principles periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals method
within the framework of density functional theory implemented in the CRYSTAL06
code has been applied to explore effect of pressure on the Compton profiles and
autocorrelation functions of MgO. Calculations are performed for the B1, B2,
B3, B4, B8_1 and h-MgO polymorphs of MgO to compute lattice constants and bulk
moduli. The isothermal enthalpy calculations predict that B4 to B8_1, h-MgO to
B8_1, B3 to B2, B4 to B2 and h-MgO to B2 transitions take place at 2, 9, 37, 42
and 64 GPa respectively. The high pressure transitions B8_1 to B2 and B1 to B2
are found to occur at 340 and 410 GPa respectively. The pressure dependent
changes are observed largely in the valence electrons Compton profiles whereas
core profiles are almost independent of the pressure in all MgO polymorphs.
Increase in pressure results in broadening of the valence Compton profiles. The
principal maxima in the second derivative of Compton profiles shifts towards
high momentum side in all structures. Reorganization of momentum density in the
B1 to B2 structural phase transition is seen in the first and second
derivatives before and after the transition pressure. Features of the
autocorrelation functions shift towards lower r side with increment in

Probing top charged-Higgs production using top polarization at the Large Hadron Collider
We study single top production in association with a charged Higgs in the
type II two Higgs doublet model at the Large Hadron Collider. The polarization
of the top, reflected in the angular distributions of its decay products, can
be a sensitive probe of new physics in its production. We present theoretically
expected polarizations of the top for top charged-Higgs production, which is
significantly different from that in the closely related process of t-W
production in the Standard Model. We then show that an azimuthal symmetry,
constructed from the decay lepton angular distribution in the laboratory frame,
is a sensitive probe of top polarization and can be used to constrain

Gene expression and splicing alterations analyzed by high throughput RNA sequencing of chronic lymphocytic leukemia specimens.
BackgroundTo determine differentially expressed and spliced RNA transcripts in chronic lymphocytic leukemia specimens a high throughput RNA-sequencing (HTS RNA-seq) analysis was performed.MethodsTen CLL specimens and five normal peripheral blood CD19+ B cells were analyzed by HTS RNA-seq. The library preparation was performed with Illumina TrueSeq RNA kit and analyzed by Illumina HiSeq 2000 sequencing system.ResultsAn average of 48.5 million reads for B cells, and 50.6 million reads for CLL specimens were obtained with 10396 and 10448 assembled transcripts for normal B cells and primary CLL specimens respectively. With the Cuffdiff analysis, 2091 differentially expressed genes (DEG) between B cells and CLL specimens based on FPKM (fragments per kilobase of transcript per million reads and false discovery rate, FDR q < 0.05, fold change >2) were identified. Expression of selected DEGs (n = 32) with up regulated and down regulated expression in CLL from RNA-seq data were also analyzed by qRT-PCR in a test cohort of CLL specimens. Even though there was a variation in fold expression of DEG genes between RNA-seq and qRT-PCR; more than 90 % of analyzed genes were validated by qRT-PCR analysis. Analysis of RNA-seq data for splicing alterations in CLL and B cells was performed by Multivariate Analysis of Transcript Splicing (MATS analysis). Skipped exon was the most frequent splicing alteration in CLL specimens with 128 significant events (P-value <0.05, minimum inclusion level difference >0.1).ConclusionThe RNA-seq analysis of CLL specimens identifies novel DEG and alternatively spliced genes that are potential prognostic markers and therapeutic targets. High level of validation by qRT-PCR for a number of DEG genes supports the accuracy of this analysis. Global comparison of transcriptomes of B cells, IGVH non-mutated CLL (U-CLL) and mutated CLL specimens (M-CLL) with multidimensional scaling analysis was able to segregate CLL and B cell transcriptomes but the M-CLL and U-CLL transcriptomes were indistinguishable. The analysis of HTS RNA-seq data to identify alternative splicing events and other genetic abnormalities specific to CLL is an added advantage of RNA-seq that is not feasible with other genome wide analysis
Comparitive study of clinical effect of Apamarga Kshara Sutra prepared by 7 and 21 coatings in Bhagandara
Background: Bhagandara is a 2nd highest prevalent disease among the anorectal diseases. It can be correlated to Fistula-In-Ano. For the management of fistula in ano various surgical, parasurgical and minimally invasive surgical procedures have been mentioned. But all these procedures carry a disadvantage of high rates of recurrence and also have a great chance of creation of serious complications like anal incontinence and anal stenosis. Hence the search for a newer, safer and scientific treatment for the management of this disease continues. Objectives: A new Kshara Sutra with fewer coatings has been tried to see if results are the same with an advantage of early and easy preparation. Materials and Methods: Total 30 patients were randomly selected in the study and divided into 2 groups fulfilling the inclusion criteria which were designed for the study. Results: Study showed significant results in reducing the discharge, pain, itching and burning sensation and induration within the group and insignificant result obtained between the groups statistically. Conclusion: The study revealed that Kshara Sutra prepared with 7 coating is more economical, easy to prepare and equally efficient in the management of Bhagandara
Nanolitre real-time PCR detection of bacterial, parasitic, and viral agents from patients with diarrhoea in Nunavut, Canada
Background. Little is known about the microbiology of diarrhoeal disease in Canada's Arctic regions. There are a number of limitations of conventional microbiology testing techniques for diarrhoeal pathogens, and these may be further compromised in the Arctic, given the often long distances for specimen transport. Objective. To develop a novel multiple-target nanolitre real-time reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR platform to simultaneously test diarrhoeal specimens collected from residents of the Qikiqtani (Baffin Island) Region of Nunavut, Canada, for a wide range of bacterial, parasitic and viral agents. Study design/methods. Diarrhoeal stool samples submitted for bacterial culture to Qikiqtani General Hospital in Nunavut over an 18-month period were tested with a multiple-target nanolitre real-time PCR panel for major diarrhoeal pathogens including 8 bacterial, 6 viral and 2 parasitic targets. Results. Among 86 stool specimens tested by PCR, a total of 50 pathogens were detected with 1 or more pathogens found in 40 (46.5%) stool specimens. The organisms detected comprised 17 Cryptosporidium spp., 5 Clostridium difficile with toxin B, 6 Campylobacter spp., 6 Salmonella spp., 4 astroviruses, 3 noroviruses, 1 rotavirus, 1 Shigella spp. and 1 Giardia spp. The frequency of detection by PCR and bacterial culture was similar for Salmonella spp., but discrepant for Campylobacter spp., as Campylobacter was detected by culture from only 1/86 specimens. Similarly, Cryptosporidium spp. was detected in multiple samples by PCR but was not detected by microscopy or enzyme immunoassay. Conclusions. Cryptosporidium spp., Campylobacter spp. and Clostridium difficile may be relatively common but possibly under-recognised pathogens in this region. Further study is needed to determine the regional epidemiology and clinical significance of these organisms. This method appears to be a useful tool for gastrointestinal pathogen research and may also be helpful for clinical diagnostics and outbreak investigation in remote regions where the yield of routine testing may be compromised
Strong interface-induced spin-orbit coupling in graphene on WS2
Interfacial interactions allow the electronic properties of graphene to be
modified, as recently demonstrated by the appearance of satellite Dirac cones
in the band structure of graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrates.
Ongoing research strives to explore interfacial interactions in a broader class
of materials in order to engineer targeted electronic properties. Here we show
that at an interface with a tungsten disulfide (WS2) substrate, the strength of
the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene is very strongly enhanced. The
induced SOI leads to a pronounced low-temperature weak anti-localization (WAL)
effect, from which we determine the spin-relaxation time. We find that
spin-relaxation time in graphene is two-to-three orders of magnitude smaller on
WS2 than on SiO2 or hBN, and that it is comparable to the intervalley
scattering time. To interpret our findings we have performed first-principle
electronic structure calculations, which both confirm that carriers in
graphene-on-WS2 experience a strong SOI and allow us to extract a
spin-dependent low-energy effective Hamiltonian. Our analysis further shows
that the use of WS2 substrates opens a possible new route to access topological
