Correlation functions of eigenvalues of multi-matrix models, and the limit of a time dependent matrix

We consider the correlation functions of eigenvalues of a unidimensional chain of large random hermitian matrices. An asymptotic expression of the orthogonal polynomials allows to find new results for the correlations of eigenvalues of different matrices of the chain. Eventually, we consider the limit of the infinite chain of matrices, which can be interpreted as a time dependent one-matrix model, and give the correlation functions of eigenvalues at different times.Comment: Tex-Harvmac, 27 pages, submitted to Journ. Developments in the negative-U modelling of the cuprate HTSC systems

The paper deals with the many stands that go into creating the unique and complex nature of the HTSC cuprates above Tc as below. Like its predecessors it treats charge, not spin or lattice, as prime mover, but thus taken in the context of the chemical bonding relevant to these copper oxides. The crucial shell filling, negative-U, double-loading fluctuations possible there require accessing at high valent local environment as prevails within the mixed valent, inhomogeneous two sub-system circumstance of the HTSC materials. Close attention is paid to the recent results from Corson, Demsar, Li, Johnson, Norman, Varma, Gyorffy and colleagues.Comment: 44 pages:200+ references. Towards a Tetravalent Chemistry of Colloids

We propose coating spherical particles or droplets with anisotropic nano-sized objects to allow micron-scale colloids to link or functionalize with a four-fold valence, similar to the sp3 hybridized chemical bonds associated with, e.g., carbon, silicon and germanium. Candidates for such coatings include triblock copolymers, gemini lipids, metallic or semiconducting nanorods and conventional liquid crystal compounds. We estimate the size of the relevant nematic Frank constants, discuss how to obtain other valences and analyze the thermal distortions of ground state configurations of defects on the sphere.Comment: Replaced to improve figures. 4 figures Nano Letter

Numerical loop quantum cosmology: an overview

    Get PDF
A brief review of various numerical techniques used in loop quantum cosmology and results is presented. These include the way extensive numerical simulations shed insights on the resolution of classical singularities, resulting in the key prediction of the bounce at the Planck scale in different models, and the numerical methods used to analyze the properties of the quantum difference operator and the von Neumann stability issues. Using the quantization of a massless scalar field in an isotropic spacetime as a template, an attempt is made to highlight the complementarity of different methods to gain understanding of the new physics emerging from the quantum theory. Open directions which need to be explored with more refined numerical methods are discussed.Comment: 33 Pages, 4 figures. Breakdown of universality in multi-cut matrix models

    Get PDF
We solve the puzzle of the disagreement between orthogonal polynomials methods and mean field calculations for random NxN matrices with a disconnected eigenvalue support. We show that the difference does not stem from a Z2 symmetry breaking, but from the discreteness of the number of eigenvalues. This leads to additional terms (quasiperiodic in N) which must be added to the naive mean field expressions. Our result invalidates the existence of a smooth topological large N expansion and some postulated universality properties of correlators. We derive the large N expansion of the free energy for the general 2-cut case. From it we rederive by a direct and easy mean-field-like method the 2-point correlators and the asymptotic orthogonal polynomials. We extend our results to any number of cuts and to non-real potentials.Comment: 35 pages, Latex (1 file) + 3 figures (3 .eps files), revised to take into account a few reference

Student politics, teaching politics, black politics: an interview with Ansel Wong

    Get PDF
Ansel Wong is the quiet man of British black politics, rarely in the limelight and never seeking political office. And yet his ‘career’ here – from Black Power firebrand to managing a multimillion budget as head of the Greater London Council’s Ethnic Minority Unit in the 1980s – spells out some of the most important developments in black educational and cultural projects. In this interview, he discusses his identification with Pan-Africanism, his involvement in student politics, his role in the establishment of youth projects and supplementary schools in the late 1960s and 1970s, and his involvement in black radical politics in London in the same period, all of which took place against the background of revolutionary ferment in the Third World and the world of ideas, and were not without their own internal class and ethnic conflicts
