Gluino Pair Production at Linear e^+e^- Colliders
We study the potential of high-energy linear colliders for the
production of gluino pairs within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
(MSSM). In this model, the process is mediated by
quark/squark loops, dominantly of the third generation, where the mixing of
left- and right-handed states can become large. Taking into account realistic
beam polarization effects, photon and -boson exchange, and current mass
exclusion limits, we scan the MSSM parameter space for various
center-of-mass energies to determine the regions, where gluino production
should be visible.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure
A lattice study of 3D compact QED at finite temperature
We study the deconfinement phase transition and monopole properties in the
finite temperature 3D compact Abelian gauge model on the lattice. We predict
the critical coupling as function of the lattice size in a simplified model to
describe monopole binding. We demonstrate numerically that the monopoles are
sensitive to the transition. In the deconfinement phase the monopoles appear in
the form of a dilute gas of magnetic dipoles. In the confinement phase both
monopole density and string tension differ from semiclassical estimates if
monopole binding is neglected. However, the analysis of the monopole clusters
shows that the relation between the string tension and the density of monopoles
in charged clusters is in reasonable agreement with those predictions. We study
the cluster structure of the vacuum in both phases of the model.Comment: 18 pages, 14 EPS figures, LaTeX uses epsfig.st
Soliton back-action evading measurement using spectral filtering
We report on a back-action evading (BAE) measurement of the photon number of
fiber optical solitons operating in the quantum regime. We employ a novel
detection scheme based on spectral filtering of colliding optical solitons. The
measurements of the BAE criteria demonstrate significant quantum state
preparation and transfer of the input signal to the signal and probe outputs
exiting the apparatus, displaying the quantum-nondemolition (QND) behavior of
the experiment.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Monopoles, confinement and deconfinement of (2+1)D compact lattice QED in external fields
The compact Abelian model in three space--time dimensions is studied in the
presence of external electromagnetic fields at finite temperatures. We show
that the deconfinement phase transition is independent on the strength of the
external fields. This result is in agreement with our observation that the
external fields create small--size magnetic dipoles from the vacuum which do
not influence the confining properties of the model. Contrary to the
deconfinement phase, the internal field in the direction of the applied
external field is attenuated in the confinement phase, this screening becomes
stronger with decreasing temperature.Comment: 22 pages, 24 EPS figures, LaTeX uses epsfig.st
The Stroop revisited: a meta-analysis of interference control in AD/HD
Background: An inhibition deficit, including poor interference control, has been implicated as one of the core deficits in AD/HD. Interference control is clinically measured by the Stroop Colour-Word Task. The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate the strength of an interference deficit in AD/HD as measured by the Stroop Colour-Word Task and to assess the role of moderating variables that could explain the results. These moderating variables included: methods of calculating the interference score, comorbid reading and psychiatric disorders, AD/HD-subtypes, gender, age, intellectual functioning, medication, and sample size. Methods: Seventeen independent studies were located including 1395 children, adolescents, and young adults, in the age range of 6-27 years. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effect sizes for the scores on the word and the colour card as well as the interference score. Results: Children with AD/HD performed more poorly on all three dependent variables. The effect sizes for word reading (d = .49) and colour naming (d = .58) were larger and more homogeneous than the effect size for the interference score (d = .35). The method used to calculate the interference score strongly influenced the findings for this measure. When interference control was calculated as the difference between the score on the colour card minus the score on the colour-word card, no differences were found between AD/HD groups and normal control groups. Discussion: The Stroop Colour-Word Task, in standard form, does not provide strong evidence for a deficit in interference control in AD/HD. However, the Stroop Colour-Word Task may not be a valid measure of interference control in AD/HD and alternative methodologies may be needed to test this aspect of the inhibitory deficit model in AD/HD. © Association for Child Psychology Psychiatry, 2004
Measurement of CP observables in B± → D(⁎)K± and B± → D(⁎)π± decays
Measurements of CP observables in B ± →D (⁎) K ± and B ± →D (⁎) π ± decays are presented, where D (⁎) indicates a neutral D or D ⁎ meson that is an admixture of D (⁎)0 and D¯ (⁎)0 states. Decays of the D ⁎ meson to the Dπ 0 and Dγ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon, resulting in distinctive shapes in the B candidate invariant mass distribution. Decays of the D meson are fully reconstructed in the K ± π ∓ , K + K − and π + π − final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in pp collisions collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0, 1.0 and 2.0 fb −1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of s=7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The study of B ± →D ⁎ K ± and B ± →D ⁎ π ± decays using a partial reconstruction method is the first of its kind, while the measurement of B ± →DK ± and B ± →Dπ ± decays is an update of previous LHCb measurements. The B ± →DK ± results are the most precise to date
Measurement of the Ξ-b and Ω-b baryon lifetimes
Using a data sample of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of , the and baryons are reconstructed in the and decay modes and their lifetimes measured to be \tau (\Xi_b^-) = 1.55\, ^{+0.10}_{-0.09}~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.03\,{\rm(syst)} ps, \tau (\Omega_b^-) = 1.54\, ^{+0.26}_{-0.21}~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.05\,{\rm(syst)} ps. These are the most precise determinations to date. Both measurements are in good agreement with previous experimental results and with theoretical predictions
First observation and amplitude analysis of the B−→D+K−π− decay
The B−→D+K−π− decay is observed in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−1 of pp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. Its branching fraction is measured to be B(B−→D+K−π−)=(7.31±0.19±0.22±0.39)×10−5 where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the branching fraction of the normalization channel B−→D+π−π−, respectively. An amplitude analysis of the resonant structure of the B−→D+K−π− decay is used to measure the contributions from quasi-two-body B−→D∗0(2400)0K−, B−→D∗2(2460)0K−, and B−→D∗J(2760)0K− decays, as well as from nonresonant sources. The D∗J(2760)0 resonance is determined to have spin 1
