The Diffuse Source at the Center of LMC SNR 0509-67.5 is a Background Galaxy at z = 0.031
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are well-known for their use in the measurement
of cosmological distances, but our continuing lack of concrete knowledge about
their progenitor stars is both a matter of debate and a source of systematic
error. In our attempts to answer this question, we presented unambiguous
evidence that LMC SNR 0509-67.5, the remnant of an SN Ia that exploded in the
Large Magellanic Cloud 400 +/- 50 years ago, did not have any point sources
(stars) near the site of the original supernova explosion, from which we
concluded that this particular supernova must have had a progenitor system
consisting of two white dwarfs (Schaefer & Pagnotta 2012). There is, however,
evidence of nebulosity near the center of the remnant, which could have been
left over detritus from the less massive WD, or could have been a background
galaxy unrelated to the supernova explosion. We obtained long-slit spectra of
the central nebulous region using GMOS on Gemini South to determine which of
these two possibilities is correct. The spectra show H-alpha emission at a
redshift of z = 0.031, which implies that the nebulosity in the center of LMC
SNR 0509-67.5 is a background galaxy, unrelated to the supernova.Comment: 2 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Diffractive charged meson pair production
We investigate the possibility to measure the nonforward gluon distribution
function by means of diffractively produced \pi^+\pi^- and K^+K^- pairs in
polarized lepton nucleon scattering. The resulting cross sections are small and
are dominated by the gluonic contribution. We find relatively large spin
asymmetries, both for \pi^+\pi^- and for K^+K^- pairs.Comment: 15 pages, version with changed kinematical cuts, to be pubished in

Modeling the momentum distributions of annihilating electron-positron pairs in solids
Measuring the Doppler broadening of the positron annihilation radiation or
the angular correlation between the two annihilation gamma quanta reflects the
momentum distribution of electrons seen by positrons in the
material.Vacancy-type defects in solids localize positrons and the measured
spectra are sensitive to the detailed chemical and geometric environments of
the defects. However, the measured information is indirect and when using it in
defect identification comparisons with theoretically predicted spectra is
indispensable. In this article we present a computational scheme for
calculating momentum distributions of electron-positron pairs annihilating in
solids. Valence electron states and their interaction with ion cores are
described using the all-electron projector augmented-wave method, and atomic
orbitals are used to describe the core states. We apply our numerical scheme to
selected systems and compare three different enhancement (electron-positron
correlation) schemes previously used in the calculation of momentum
distributions of annihilating electron-positron pairs within the
density-functional theory. We show that the use of a state-dependent
enhancement scheme leads to better results than a position-dependent
enhancement factor in the case of ratios of Doppler spectra between different
systems. Further, we demonstrate the applicability of our scheme for studying
vacancy-type defects in metals and semiconductors. Especially we study the
effect of forces due to a positron localized at a vacancy-type defect on the

Low-momentum Hyperon-Nucleon Interactions
We present a first exploratory study for hyperon-nucleon interactions using
renormalization group techniques. The effective two-body low-momentum potential
V_low-k is obtained by integrating out the high-momentum components from
realistic Nijmegen YN potentials. A T-matrix equivalence approach is employed,
so that the low-energy phase shifts are reproduced by V_low-k up to a momentum
scale Lambda ~ 500 MeV. Although the various bare Nijmegen models differ
somewhat from each other, the corresponding V_low-k interactions show
convergence in some channels, suggesting a possible unique YN interaction at

Exploring positive adjustment in HIV positive African women living in the UK

The numbers of African women living with HIV/AIDS in the UK is growing and yet little is known about the adjustment experience for these women. This study explored aspects of positive adjustment to living with HIV/AIDS among a sample of African women living in London, UK. Transcripts of semi-structured interviews with 12 women were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Two superordinate themes emerged inductively from the data: positive changes in coping (subthemes: positive interpretation of their situation and positive behavioural changes) and positive growth since the HIV diagnosis (subthemes: changes in the value of life and, changes in goals and opportunities). While these women acknowledged the negative impact of living with HIV/AIDS, all participants mentioned changes in health behaviours to help regain mastery of their lives and comparing with others better-off and worse-off was used to enhance self-esteem and view their situation positively. Near-infrared studies of the 2010 outburst of the recurrent nova U Scorpii
We present near-infrared (near-IR) observations of the 2010 outburst of U Sco. JHK photometry is presented on 10 consecutive days starting from 0.59 d after outburst. Such photometry can gainfully be integrated into a larger data base of other multiwavelength data which aim to comprehensively study the evolution of U Sco. Early near-IR spectra, starting from 0.56 d after outburst, are presented and their general characteristics discussed. Early in the eruption, we see very broad wings in several spectral lines, with tails extending up to ∼10 000 km s−1 along the line of sight; it is unexpected to have a nova with ejection velocities equal to those usually thought to be exclusive to supernovae. From recombination analysis, we estimate an upper limit of [inline image] for the ejected mass
Individual Values and SME Environmental Engagement
We study the values on which managers of small and medium-sized enterprises draw when constructing their personal and organizational-level engagement with environmental issues, particularly climate change. Values play an important mediating role in business environmental engagement but relatively little research has been conducted on individual values in smaller organizations. Using the Schwartz Value System (SVS) as a framework for a qualitative analysis, we identify four ‘ideal-types’ of SME managers and provide rich descriptions of the ways in which values shape their constructions of environmental engagement. In contrast to previous research, which is framed around a binary divide between self-enhancing and self-transcending values, our typology distinguishes between individuals drawing primarily on Power or on Achievement values, and indicates how a combination of Achievement and Benevolence values is particularly significant in shaping environmental engagement. This demonstrates the theoretical usefulness of focusing on a complete range of values. Implications for policy and practice are discussed
Tests of a multichannel photometer based on silicon diode detectors
A breadboard photometer was constructed that demonstrates a precision of 2 times 10 to the 4th power in the laboratory and scintillation-limited performance when used with an 0.5 m aperture telescope. Because the detectors and preamps are not cooled, only stars with m sub v approx. less than 4 are bright enough to allow the photometer to attain a precision of 1 times 10 to the 3rd power for three minute observations with an 0.5 m aperature telescope. Cooling the telescope should allow much fainter stars to be observed. Increasing the aperture of the telescope will allow higher precision and the observation of fainter stars
From X-ray dips to eclipse: Witnessing disk reformation in the recurrent nova USco
The 10th recorded outburst of the recurrent eclipsing nova USco was observed
simultaneously in X-ray, UV, and optical by XMM-Newton on days 22.9 and 34.9
after outburst. Two full passages of the companion in front of the nova ejecta
were observed, witnessing the reformation of the accretion disk. On day 22.9,
we observed smooth eclipses in UV and optical but deep dips in the X-ray light
curve which disappeared by day 34.9, then yielding clean eclipses in all bands.
X-ray dips can be caused by clumpy absorbing material that intersects the line
of sight while moving along highly elliptical trajectories. Cold material from
the companion could explain the absence of dips in UV and optical light. The
disappearance of X-ray dips before day 34.9 implies significant progress in the
formation of the disk. The X-ray spectra contain photospheric continuum
emission plus strong emission lines, but no clear absorption lines. Both
continuum and emission lines in the X-ray spectra indicate a temperature
increase from day 22.9 to day 34.9. We find clear evidence in the spectra and
light curves for Thompson scattering of the photospheric emission from the
white dwarf. Photospheric absorption lines can be smeared out during scattering
in a plasma of fast electrons. We also find spectral signatures of resonant
line scattering that lead to the observation of the strong emission lines.
Their dominance could be a general phenomenon in high-inclination systems such
