Frequently Encountered Animal Diseases at Animal Hospital Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State - Nigeria
Data from the clinical record of the Animal Hospital Birnin Kebbi was used to determine the frequency of occurrence of various diseases of animals from February 2009 to January 2010. A total of 794 cases were presented. 155 (19.5%) for routine check and vaccination, while the bulk 639 (80.5%)were presented as a result of disease conditions. Diseases diagnosed include; helminthoses 141(22%), followed by fowl pox 65(10.2%), lousiness 61(9.5%), traumatic injuries 46(7.2%), enteritis 32(5.0%), upper respiratory tract infection 29(4.5%), mite/mange 24(3.8%), septicemia22(3.4%), bloat 19(3.0%), and abscess 17(2.7%). Other moderately occurring, disorders included dystocia & post partum complications 14(2.2%) each, mal-directed horn/hooves 12(1.9%), tick infestation 10(1.6%), coccidiosis 9(1.4%), fracture 8(1.3%), hernia, PPR, pregnancy toxemia & castration 7(1.1%) each. Poisoning, infectious coryza, arthritis, rumen impaction & vaginal prolapse were 6(0.9%) each, pneumonia and mastitis 5(0.8%) each. The less occurring disorders included urinarytract infection, Gumboro disease, black leg, abortion, paraphimosis & dog bite 4(0.6%) each. Rhinitis & chronic respiratory diseases 3(0.5%) each, Foot and Mouth disease, New castle disease, cowdriosis, and hygroma numbering 2(0.3%) each. The least occurring disorders were Fowltyphoid, dislocation, trypanasomosis, pyometra, orf, stomatitis, grass tetany, canine distemper, atresia ani and rectal prolapse 1(0.2%) case each. Information generated can be useful to Government agencies involved in formulating policies and guidelines for prevention andcontrol of animal diseases
Renormalization in General Gauge Mediation
We revisit General Gauge Mediation (GGM) in light of the supersymmetric
(linear) sigma model by utilizing the current superfield. The current
superfield in the GGM is identified with supersymmetric extension of the vector
symmetry current of the sigma model while spontaneous breakdown of
supersymmetry in the GGM corresponds to soft breakdown of the axial vector
symmetry of the sigma model. We first derive the current superfield from the
supersymmetric linear sigma model and then compute 2-point functions of the
current superfield using the (anti-)commutation relations of the messenger
component fields. After the global symmetry are weakly gauged, the 2-point
functions of the current superfield are identified with a part of the 2-point
functions of the associated vector superfield. We renormalize them by
dimensional regularization and show that physical gaugino and sfermion masses
of the MSSM are expressed in terms of the wavefunction renormalization
constants of the component fields of the vector superfield.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure
Wilson Lines and a Canonical Basis of SU(4) Heterotic Standard Models
The spontaneous breaking of SU(4) heterotic standard models by Z_3 x Z_3
Wilson lines to the MSSM with three right-handed neutrino supermultiplets and
gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1) x U(1) is explored. The two-dimensional
subspace of the Spin(10) Lie algebra that commutes with su(3)_C + su(2)_L is
analyzed. It is shown that there is a unique basis for which the initial soft
supersymmetry breaking parameters are uncorrelated and for which the U(1) x
U(1) field strengths have no kinetic mixing at any scale. If the Wilson lines
"turn on" at different scales, there is an intermediate regime with either a
left-right or a Pati-Salam type model. We compute their spectra directly from
string theory, and adjust the associated mass parameter so that all gauge
parameters exactly unify. A detailed analysis of the running gauge couplings
and soft gaugino masses is presented.Comment: 59 pages, 9 figure
Higgs and non-universal gaugino masses: no SUSY signal expected yet?
So far, no supersymmetric particles have been detected at the Large Hadron
Collider (LHC). However, the recent Higgs results have interesting implications
for the SUSY parameter space. In this paper, we study the consequences of an
LHC Higgs signal for a model with non-universal gaugino masses in the context
of SU(5) unification. The gaugino mass ratios associated with the higher
representations produce viable spectra that are largely inaccessible to the
current LHC and direct dark matter detection experiments. Thus, in light of the
Higgs results, the non-observation of SUSY is no surprise.Comment: supplementary file containing plots with log priors in ancillary

Maternal and Child Oral Health Interventions in Middle East and North Africa Regions:a rapid review
Objectives: To conduct a rapid review to identify any maternal and/or child oral health interventions implemented and/or tested in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries generally, and Lebanon, Palestine and Syria specifically, and to compile information on the relative effectiveness of these interventions. Methods: A systematic search was conducted for primary and secondary literature indexed in five online databases, and the websites of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Results: Two independent researchers reviewed 1,180 records from the online databases, and 3,120 reports from the WHO, UNRWA, UNICEF and UNHCR. Four unique studies were included and conducted in Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iran. No systematic reviews were found for targeted interventions in MENA regions. However, interventions using fluoridated toothpaste (Syria), preventive treatment and fluoridated chewing gum (Saudi Arabia), and oral health education with oral health reminders (Iran) were significantly effective in reducing early child caries (ECC) experience. In Syria and Iran, mother and child oral health promotions integrated into ongoing vaccination programmes were effective in reducing ECC. These interventions formed part of WHO and Ministry of Health programmes. Conclusion: Further investigation is essential to verify the effectiveness of incorporating multi-disciplinary, theory-driven oral health interventions into ongoing WHO maternal and child health programmes in MENA countries to assist in promoting oral health and wellbeing
The Minimal Theory for R-parity Violation at the LHC
We investigate the simplest gauge theory for spontaneous R-parity breaking
and its testability at the LHC. This theory based on a local B-L gauge symmetry
can be considered as the simplest framework for understanding the origin of the
R-parity violating interactions, giving rise to potential lepton number
violating signals and suppressed baryon number violating operators. The full
spectrum of the theory and the constraints coming from neutrino masses are
analyzed in great detail. We discuss the proton decay issue and the possible
dark matter candidates. In order to assess the testability of the theory we
study the properties of the new gauge boson, the neutralino decays and the main
production channels for the charged sleptons at the LHC. We find that the
channels with four charged leptons, three of them with the same sign, and four
jets give us the most striking signals for the testability of lepton number
violation at the LHC.Comment: minor corrections, to appear in JHE
Decoupling property of the supersymmetric Higgs sector with four doublets
In supersymmetric standard models with multi Higgs doublet fields,
selfcoupling constants in the Higgs potential come only from the D-terms at the
tree level. We investigate the decoupling property of additional two heavier
Higgs doublet fields in the supersymmetric standard model with four Higgs
doublets. In particular, we study how they can modify the predictions on the
quantities well predicted in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM),
when the extra doublet fields are rather heavy to be measured at collider
experiments. The B-term mixing between these extra heavy Higgs bosons and the
relatively light MSSM-like Higgs bosons can significantly change the
predictions in the MSSM such as on the masses of MSSM-like Higgs bosons as well
as the mixing angle for the two light CP-even scalar states. We first give
formulae for deviations in the observables of the MSSM in the decoupling region
for the extra two doublet fields. We then examine possible deviations in the

Non invasive ventilation after extubation in paediatric patients: a preliminary study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) may be useful after extubation in children. Our objective was to determine postextubation NIV characteristics and to identify risk factors of postextubation NIV failure.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective observational study was conducted in an 8-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Following PICU protocol, NIV was applied to patients who had been mechanically ventilated for over 12 hours considered at high-risk of extubation failure -elective NIV (eNIV), immediately after extubation- or those who developed respiratory failure within 48 hours after extubation -rescue NIV (rNIV)-. Patients were categorized in subgroups according to their main underlying conditions. NIV was deemed successful when reintubation was avoided. Logistic regression analysis was performed in order to identify predictors of NIV failure.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were 41 episodes (rNIV in 20 episodes). Success rate was 50% in rNIV and 81% in eNIV (p = 0.037). We found significant differences in univariate analysis between success and failure groups in respiratory rate (RR) decrease at 6 hours, FiO<sub>2 </sub>at 1 hour and PO<sub>2</sub>/FiO<sub>2 </sub>ratio at 6 hours. Neurologic condition was found to be associated with NIV failure. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified no variable as independent NIV outcome predictor.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data suggest that postextubation NIV seems to be useful in avoiding reintubation in high-risk children when applied immediately after extubation. NIV was more likely to fail when ARF has already developed (rNIV), when RR at 6 hours did not decrease and if oxygen requirements increased. Neurologic patients seem to be at higher risk of reintubation despite NIV use.</p
Behaviour change strategies for reducing blood pressure-related disease burden: findings from a global implementation research programme.
The Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases comprises the majority of the world's public research funding agencies. It is focussed on implementation research to tackle the burden of chronic diseases in low- and middle-income countries and amongst vulnerable populations in high-income countries. In its inaugural research call, 15 projects were funded, focussing on lowering blood pressure-related disease burden. In this study, we describe a reflexive mapping exercise to identify the behaviour change strategies undertaken in each of these projects.Using the Behaviour Change Wheel framework, each team rated the capability, opportunity and motivation of the various actors who were integral to each project (e.g. community members, non-physician health workers and doctors in projects focussed on service delivery). Teams then mapped the interventions they were implementing and determined the principal policy categories in which those interventions were operating. Guidance was provided on the use of Behaviour Change Wheel to support consistency in responses across teams. Ratings were iteratively discussed and refined at several group meetings.There was marked variation in the perceived capabilities, opportunities and motivation of the various actors who were being targeted for behaviour change strategies. Despite this variation, there was a high degree of synergy in interventions functions with most teams utilising complex interventions involving education, training, enablement, environmental restructuring and persuasion oriented strategies. Similar policy categories were also targeted across teams particularly in the areas of guidelines, communication/marketing and service provision with few teams focussing on fiscal measures, regulation and legislation.The large variation in preparedness to change behaviour amongst the principal actors across these projects suggests that the interventions themselves will be variably taken up, despite the similarity in approaches taken. The findings highlight the importance of contextual factors in driving success and failure of research programmes. Forthcoming outcome and process evaluations from each project will build on this exploratory work and provide a greater understanding of factors that might influence scale-up of intervention strategies
Strong interface-induced spin-orbit coupling in graphene on WS2
Interfacial interactions allow the electronic properties of graphene to be
modified, as recently demonstrated by the appearance of satellite Dirac cones
in the band structure of graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrates.
Ongoing research strives to explore interfacial interactions in a broader class
of materials in order to engineer targeted electronic properties. Here we show
that at an interface with a tungsten disulfide (WS2) substrate, the strength of
the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene is very strongly enhanced. The
induced SOI leads to a pronounced low-temperature weak anti-localization (WAL)
effect, from which we determine the spin-relaxation time. We find that
spin-relaxation time in graphene is two-to-three orders of magnitude smaller on
WS2 than on SiO2 or hBN, and that it is comparable to the intervalley
scattering time. To interpret our findings we have performed first-principle
electronic structure calculations, which both confirm that carriers in
graphene-on-WS2 experience a strong SOI and allow us to extract a
spin-dependent low-energy effective Hamiltonian. Our analysis further shows
that the use of WS2 substrates opens a possible new route to access topological
