Recent Overview of Solar Photocatalysis and Solar Photo-Fenton Processes for Wastewater Treatment
This literature research, although not exhaustive, gives perspective to solar-driven photocatalysis, such as solar photo-Fenton and TiO2 solar photocatalysis, reported in the literature for the degradation of aqueous organic pollutants. Parameters that influence the degradation and mineralization of organics like catalyst preparation, type and load of catalyst, catalyst phase, pH, applied potential, and type of organic pollutant are addressed. Such parameters may also affect the photoactivity of the catalysts used in the studied solar processes. Solar irradiation is a renewable, abundant, and pollution-free energy source for low-cost commercial applications. Therefore, these solar processes represent an environmentally friendly alternative mainly because the use of electricity can be decreased/avoided
Genetic footprints of iberian cattle in America 500 years after the arrival of Columbus.
American Creole cattle presumably descend from animals imported from the Iberian Peninsula during the period of colonization and settlement, through different migration routes, andmay have also suffered the influence of cattle directly imported from Africa. The introduction of European cattle, which began in the 18th century, and later of Zebu from India, has threatened the survival of Creole populations, some of which have nearly disappeared or were admixed with exotic breeds. Assessment of the genetic status of Creole cattle is essential for the establishment of conservation programs of these historical resources. Methodology/Principal Findings: We sampled 27 Creole populations, 39 Iberian, 9 European and 6 Zebu breeds. We used microsatellite markers to assess the origins of Creole cattle, and to investigate the influence of different breeds on their genetic make-up. The major ancestral contributions are from breeds of southern Spain and Portugal, in agreement with the historical ports of departure of ships sailing towards the Western Hemisphere. This Iberian contribution to Creoles may also include some African influence, given the influential role that African cattle have had in the development of Iberian breeds, but the possibility of a direct influence on Creoles of African cattle imported to America can not be discarded. In addition to the Iberian influence, the admixture with other European breeds was minor. The Creoles from tropical areas, especially those from the Caribbean, show clear signs of admixture with Zebu. Conclusions/Significance: Nearly five centuries since cattle were first brought to the Americas, Creoles still show a strong and predominant signature of their Iberian ancestors. Creole breeds differ widely from each other, both in genetic structure and influences from other breeds. Efforts are needed to avoid their extinction or further genetic erosion, which would compromise centuries of selective adaptation to a wide range of environmental conditions
Cosmological Galaxy Formation Simulations Using SPH
We present the McMaster Unbiased Galaxy Simulations (MUGS), the first 9
galaxies of an unbiased selection ranging in total mass from 5
M to 2 M simulated using n-body smoothed
particle hydrodynamics (SPH) at high resolution. The simulations include a
treatment of low temperature metal cooling, UV background radiation, star
formation, and physically motivated stellar feedback. Mock images of the
simulations show that the simulations lie within the observed range of
relations such as that between color and magnitude and that between brightness
and circular velocity (Tully-Fisher). The greatest discrepancy between the
simulated galaxies and observed galaxies is the high concentration of material
at the center of the galaxies as represented by the centrally peaked rotation
curves and the high bulge-to-total ratios of the simulations determined both
kinematically and photometrically. This central concentration represents the
excess of low angular momentum material that long has plagued morphological
studies of simulated galaxies and suggests that higher resolutions and a more
accurate description of feedback will be required to simulate more realistic
galaxies. Even with the excess central mass concentrations, the simulations
suggest the important role merger history and halo spin play in the formation

Seroepidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection in pregnant women in a public hospital in northern Mexico
BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection in pregnant women represents a risk for congenital disease. There is scarce information about the epidemiology of T. gondii infection in pregnant women in Mexico. Therefore, we sought to determine the prevalence of T. gondii infection and associated socio-demographic, clinical and behavioural characteristics in a population of pregnant women of Durango City, Mexico. METHODS: Three hundred and forty three women seeking prenatal care in a public hospital of Durango City in Mexico were examined for T. gondii infection. All women were tested for anti-T. gondii IgM and IgG antibodies by using IMx Toxo IgM and IMx Toxo IgG 2.0 kits (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL, USA), respectively. Socio-demographic, clinical and behavioural characteristics from each participant were also obtained. RESULTS: Twenty one out of the 343 (6.1%) women had IgG anti-T. gondii antibodies. None of the 343 women had IgM anti-T. gondii antibodies. Multivariate analysis using logic regression showed that T. gondii infection was associated with living in a house with soil floor (adjusted OR = 7.16; 95% CI: 1.39â36.84), residing outside of Durango State (adjusted OR = 4.25; 95% CI: 1.72â10.49), and turkey meat consumption (adjusted OR = 3.85; 95% CI: 1.30â11.44). Other characteristics as cat contact, gardening, and food preferences did not show any association with T. gondii infection. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of T. gondii infection in pregnant women of Durango City is low as compared with those reported in other regions of Mexico and the majority of other countries. Poor housing conditions as soil floors, residing in other Mexican States, and turkey meat consumption might contribute to acquire T. gondii infection
Effect of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on the total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity of wild Mediterranean edible plant extracts
The recent interest in wild edible plants is associated with their health benefits, which are mainly due to their richness in antioxidant compounds, particularly phenolics. Nevertheless, some of these compounds are metabolized after ingestion, being transformed into metabolites frequently with lower antioxidant activity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the digestive process on the total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity of extracts from four wild edible plants used in the Mediterranean diet (Beta maritima L., Plantago major L., Oxalis pes-caprae L. and Scolymus hispanicus L.). HPLC-DAD analysis revealed that S. hispanicus is characterized by the presence of caffeoylquinic acids, dicaffeoylquinic acids and flavonol derivatives, P. major by high amounts of verbascoside, B. maritima possesses 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, quercetin derivatives and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, and O. pes-caprae extract contains hydroxycinnamic acids and flavone derivatives. Total phenolic contents were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu assay, and antioxidant activity by the ABTS, DPPH, ORAC and FRAP assays. Phenolic contents of P. major and S. hispanicus extracts were not affected by digestion, but they significantly decreased in B. maritima after both phases of digestion process and in O. pes-caprae after the gastric phase. The antioxidant activity results varied with the extract and the method used to evaluate the activity. Mast Cell Diseases in Practice and Research:Issues and Perspectives Raised by Patients and Their Recommendations to the Scientific Community and Beyond
Background: Since 2010, patients and physicians have collaborated to understand unmet needs of patients with mast cell diseases, incorporating mastocytosis and mast cell activation disorders, which include mast cell activation syndromes. Objective: This Open Innovation in Science project aims to expand understanding of the needs of patients affected by mast cell diseases, and encourage global communication among patient advocacy groups, physicians, researchers, industry, and government. A major aim is to support the scientific community's efforts to improve diagnosis, management, therapy, and patientsâ quality of life by addressing unmet needs. Methods: In collaboration with mast cell disease specialists, 13 patient advocacy groups from 12 countries and regions developed lists of top patient needs. A core team of leaders from patient advocacy groups collected and analyzed the data and proposed possible actions to address patient needs. Results: Findings identified similarities and differences among participating countries in unmet needs between patients with mastocytosis and those with mast cell activation syndromes. Issues emphasized struggles relating to the nature and rarity of mast cell diseases, their impact on quality of life, the diagnostic process, access to appropriate care, more effective treatment, and the need for research. Conclusions: Solutions vary across countries because situations differ, in particular regarding the existence of and access to centers of excellence and reference centers. Multifaceted mast cell activation syndrome barriers necessitate innovative approaches to improve access to appropriate care. The outcomes of this project should greatly support scientists and clinicians in their efforts to improve diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients with mastocytosis and mast cell activation disorders
Horizontal muon track identification with neural networks in HAWC
Nowadays the implementation of artificial neural networks in high-energyphysics has obtained excellent results on improving signal detection. In thiswork we propose to use neural networks (NNs) for event discrimination in HAWC.This observatory is a water Cherenkov gamma-ray detector that in recent yearshas implemented algorithms to identify horizontal muon tracks. However, thesealgorithms are not very efficient. In this work we describe the implementationof three NNs: two based on image classification and one based on objectdetection. Using these algorithms we obtain an increase in the number ofidentified tracks. The results of this study could be used in the future toimprove the performance of the Earth-skimming technique for the indirectmeasurement of neutrinos with HAWC.<br
Combined dark matter searches towards dwarf spheroidal galaxies with Fermi-LAT, HAWC, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS
Cosmological and astrophysical observations suggest that 85% of the total matter of the Universe is made of Dark Matter (DM). However, its nature remains one of the most challenging and fundamental open questions of particle physics. Assuming particle DM, this exotic form of matter cannot consist of Standard Model (SM) particles. Many models have been developed to attempt unraveling the nature of DM such as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), the most favored particle candidates. WIMP annihilations and decay could produce SM particles which in turn hadronize and decay to give SM secondaries such as high energy \u1d6fe rays. In the framework of indirect DM search, observations of promising targets are used to search for signatures of DM annihilation. Among these, the dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are commonly favored owing to their expected high DM content and negligible astrophysical background. In this work, we present the very first combination of 20 dSph observations, performed by the Fermi-LAT, HAWC, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS collaborations in order to maximize the sensitivity of DM searches and improve the current results. We use a joint maximum likelihood approach combining each experimentâs individual analysis to derive more constraining upper limits on the WIMP DM self-annihilation cross-section as a function of DM particle mass. We present new DM constraints over the widest mass range ever reported, extending from 5 GeV to 100 TeV thanks to the combination of these five different \u1d6fe-ray instruments
Spectroscopic Survey of the Galaxy with Gaia II. The expected science yield from the Radial Velocity Spectrometer
The Gaia mission is designed as a Galaxy explorer, and will measure
simultaneously, in a survey mode, the five or six phase space parameters of all
stars brighter than 20th magnitude, as well as providing a description of their
astrophysical characteristics. These measurements are obtained by combining an
astrometric instrument with micro-arcsecond capabilities, a photometric system
giving the magnitudes and colours in 15 bands and a medium resolution
spectrograph named the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS). The latter
instrument will produce spectra in the 848 to 874 nm wavelength range, with a
resolving power R = 11 500, from which radial velocities, rotational
velocities, atmospheric parameters and abundances can be derived. A companion
paper (Katz et al. 2004) presents the characteristics of the RVS and its
performance. This paper details the outstanding scientific impact of this
important part of the Gaia satellite on some key open questions in present day
astrophysics. The unbiased and simultaneous acquisition of multi-epoch radial
velocities and individual abundances of key elements in parallel with the
astrometric parameters is essential for the determination of the dynamical
state and formation history of our Galaxy. Moreover, for stars brighter than
V=15, the resolving power of the RVS will give information about most of the
effects which influence the position of a star in the Hertzsprung-Russell
diagram, placing unprecedented constraints on the age, internal structure and
evolution of stars of all types. Finally, the RVS multi-epoch observations are
ideally suited to the identification, classification and characterisation of
