Tradeoffs in jet inlet design: a historical perspective
The design of the inlet(s) is one of the most demanding tasks of the development process of any gas turbine-powered aircraft. This is mainly due to the multi-objective and multidisciplinary nature of the exercise. The solution is generally a compromise between a number of conflicting goals and these conflicts are the subject of the present paper. We look into how these design tradeoffs have been reflected in the actual inlet designs over the years and how the emphasis has shifted from one driver to another. We also review some of the relevant developments of the jet age in aerodynamics and design and manufacturing technology and we examine how they have influenced and informed inlet design decision
Incorporating epilepsy genetics into clinical practice: a 360°evaluation
We evaluated a new epilepsy genetic diagnostic and counseling service covering a UK population of 3.5 million. We calculated diagnostic yield, estimated clinical impact, and surveyed referring clinicians and families. We costed alternative investigational pathways for neonatal onset epilepsy. Patients with epilepsy of unknown aetiology onset 2 years, with turnaround time of 21 days. Pathogenic variants were seen in SCN8A, SCN2A, SCN1A, KCNQ2, HNRNPU, GRIN2A, SYNGAP1, STXBP1, STX1B, CDKL5, CHRNA4, PCDH19 and PIGT. Clinician prediction was poor. Clinicians and families rated the service highly. In neonates, the cost of investigations could be reduced from £9362 to £2838 by performing gene panel earlier and the median diagnostic delay of 3.43 years reduced to 21 days. Panel testing for epilepsy has a high yield among children with onset < 2 years, and an appreciable clinical and financial impact. Parallel gene testing supersedes single gene testing in most early onset cases that do not show a clear genotype-phenotype correlation. Clinical interpretation of laboratory results, and in-depth discussion of implications for patients and their families, necessitate multidisciplinary input and skilled genetic counseling
Calculations of collisions between cold alkaline earth atoms in a weak laser field
We calculate the light-induced collisional loss of laser-cooled and trapped
magnesium atoms for detunings up to 50 atomic linewidths to the red of the
^1S_0-^1P_1 cooling transition. We evaluate loss rate coefficients due to both
radiative and nonradiative state-changing mechanisms for temperatures at and
below the Doppler cooling temperature. We solve the Schrodinger equation with a
complex potential to represent spontaneous decay, but also give analytic models
for various limits. Vibrational structure due to molecular photoassociation is
present in the trap loss spectrum. Relatively broad structure due to absorption
to the Mg_2 ^1Sigma_u state occurs for detunings larger than about 10 atomic
linewidths. Much sharper structure, especially evident at low temperature,
occurs even at smaller detunings due to of Mg_2 ^1Pi_g absorption, which is
weakly allowed due to relativistic retardation corrections to the forbidden
dipole transition strength. We also perform model studies for the other
alkaline earth species Ca, Sr, and Ba and for Yb, and find similar qualitative

Dust and Metal Column Densities in Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies
In this paper we present the results from the analysis of a sample of 28
gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectral energy distributions, spanning the
X-ray through to near-infrared wavelengths. This is the largest sample of GRB
afterglow spectral energy distributions thus far studied, providing a strong
handle on the optical depth distribution of soft X-ray absorption and
dust-extinction systems in GRB host galaxies. We detect an absorption system
within the GRB host galaxy in 79% of the sample, and an extinction system in
71% of the sample, and find the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law to
provide an acceptable fit to the host galaxy extinction profile for the
majority of cases, consistent with previous findings. The range in the soft
X-ray absorption to dust-extinction ratio, N_{H,X}/Av, in GRB host galaxies
spans almost two orders of magnitude, and the typical ratios are significantly
larger than those of the Magellanic Clouds or Milky Way. Although dust
destruction could be a cause, at least in part, for the large N_{H,X}/Av
ratios, the good fit provided by the SMC extinction law for the majority of our
sample suggests that there is an abundance of small dust grains in the GRB
environment, which we would expect to have been destroyed if dust destruction
were responsible for the large N_{H,X}/Av ratios. Instead, our analysis
suggests that the distribution of N_{H,X}/Av in GRB host galaxies may be mostly
intrinsic to these galaxies, and this is further substantiated by evidence for
a strong negative correlation between N_{H,X}/Av and metallicity for a
subsample of GRB hosts with known metallicity. Furthermore, we find the
N_{H,X}/Av ratio and metallicity for this subsample of GRBs to be comparable to
the relation found in other more metal-rich galaxies.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Group 3 ITI Consensus Report: Patient-reported outcome measures associated with implant dentistry
Objectives: The aim of Working Group 3 was to focus on three topics that were assessed using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). These topics included the following: (a) the aesthetics of tooth and implant-supported fixed dental prostheses focusing on partially edentulous patients, (b) a comparison of fixed and removable implant-retained prostheses for edentulous populations, and (c) immediate versus early/conventional loading of immediately placed implants in partially edentate patients. PROMs include ratings of satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life (QHRQoL), as well as other indicators, that is, pain, general health-related quality of life (e.g., SF-36). Materials and methods: The Consensus Conference Group 3 participants discussed the findings of the three systematic review manuscripts. Following comprehensive discussions, participants developed consensus statements and recommendations that were then discussed in larger plenary sessions. Following this, any necessary modifications were made and approved. Results: Patients were very satisfied with the aesthetics of implant-supported fixed dental prostheses and the surrounding mucosa. Implant neck design, restorative material, or use of a provisional restoration did not influence patients’ ratings. Edentulous patients highly rate both removable and fixed implant-supported prostheses. However, they rate their ability to maintain their oral hygiene significantly higher with the removable prosthesis. Both immediate provisionalization and conventional loading receive positive patient-reported outcomes. Conclusions: Patient-reported outcome measures should be gathered in every clinical study in which the outcomes of oral rehabilitation with dental implants are investigated. PROMs, such as patients’ satisfaction and QHRQoL, should supplement other clinical parameters in our clinical definition of success
A Reverse Shock and Unusual Radio Properties in GRB 160625B
We present multi-wavelength observations and modeling of the exceptionally bright long γ-ray burst GRB 160625B. The optical and X-ray data are well fit by synchrotron emission from a collimated blastwave with an opening angle of {\theta }_{j}\approx 3\buildrel{\circ}\over{.} 6 and kinetic energy of erg, propagating into a low-density ( cm−3) medium with a uniform profile. The forward shock is sub-dominant in the radio band; instead, the radio emission is dominated by two additional components. The first component is consistent with emission from a reverse shock, indicating an initial Lorentz factor of and an ejecta magnetization of {R}_{B}\approx 1\mbox{--}100. The second component exhibits peculiar spectral and temporal evolution and is most likely the result of scattering of the radio emission by the turbulent Milky Way interstellar medium (ISM). Such scattering is expected in any sufficiently compact extragalactic source and has been seen in GRBs before, but the large amplitude and long duration of the variability seen here are qualitatively more similar to extreme scattering events previously observed in quasars, rather than normal interstellar scintillation effects. High-cadence, broadband radio observations of future GRBs are needed to fully characterize such effects, which can sensitively probe the properties of the ISM and must be taken into account before variability intrinsic to the GRB can be interpreted correctly

The effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in the perinatal period: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Perinatal mental health difficulties are associated with adverse consequences for parents and infants. However, the potential risks associated with the use of psychotropic medication for pregnant and breastfeeding women and the preferences expressed by women for non-pharmacological interventions mean it is important to ensure that effective psychological interventions are available. It has been argued that mindfulness-based interventions may offer a novel approach to treating perinatal mental health difficulties, but relatively little is known about their effectiveness with perinatal populations. This paper therefore presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for reducing depression, anxiety and stress and improving mindfulness skills in the perinatal period. A systematic review identified seventeen studies of mindfulness-based interventions in the perinatal period, including both controlled trials (n = 9) and pre-post uncontrolled studies (n = 8). Eight of these studies also included qualitative data. Hedge’s g was used to assess uncontrolled and controlled effect sizes in separate meta-analyses, and a narrative synthesis of qualitative data was produced. Pre- to post-analyses showed significant reductions in depression, anxiety and stress and significant increases in mindfulness skills post intervention, each with small to medium effect sizes. Completion of the mindfulness-based interventions was reasonable with around three quarters of participants meeting study-defined criteria for engagement or completion where this was recorded. Qualitative data suggested that participants viewed mindfulness interventions positively. However, between-group analyses failed to find any significant post-intervention benefits for depression, anxiety or stress of mindfulness-based interventions in comparison to control conditions: effect sizes were negligible and it was conspicuous that intervention group participants did not appear to improve significantly more than controls in their mindfulness skills. The interventions offered often deviated from traditional mindfulness-based cognitive therapy or mindfulness-based stress reduction programmes, and there was also a tendency for studies to focus on healthy rather than clinical populations, and on antenatal rather than postnatal populations. It is argued that these and other limitations with the included studies and their interventions may have been partly responsible for the lack of significant between-group effects. The implications of the findings and recommendations for future research are discussed
