    Dynamics of the particle - hole pair creation in graphene

    The process of coherent creation of particle - hole excitations by an electric field in graphene is quantitatively described. We calculate the evolution of current density, number of pairs and energy after switching on the electric field. In particular, it leads to a dynamical visualization of the universal finite resistivity without dissipation in pure graphene. We show that the DC conductivity of pure graphene is rather πe22h\frac{\pi e^{2}}{2 h} than the often cited value of 4e2πh\frac{4 e^{2}}{\pi h}. This value coincides with the AC conductivity calculated and measured recently at optical frequencies. The effect of temperature and random chemical potential (charge puddles) are considered and explain the recent experiment on suspended graphene. A possibility of Bloch oscillations is discussed within the tight binding model.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Ballistic transport, chiral anomaly and emergence of the neutral electron - hole plasma in graphene

    The process of coherent creation of particle - hole excitations by an electric field in graphene is quantitatively described using a dynamic "first quantized" approach. We calculate the evolution of current density, number of pairs and energy in ballistic regime using the tight binding model. The series in electric field strength EE up to third order in both DC and AC are calculated. We show how the physics far from the two Dirac points enters various physical quantities in linear response and how it is related to the chiral anomaly. The third harmonic generation and the imaginary part of conductivity are obtained. It is shown that at certain time scale tnl∝E−1/2t_{nl}\propto E^{-1/2} the physical behaviour dramatically changes and the perturbation theory breaks down. Beyond the linear response physics is explored using an exact solution of the first quantized equations. While for small electric fields the I-V curve is linear characterized by the universal minimal resistivity σ=π/2(e2/h)\sigma =\pi /2(e^{2}/h)%, at t>tnlt>t_{nl} the conductivity grows fast. The copious pair creation (with rate E3/2E^{3/2}), analogous to Schwinger's electron - positron pair creation from vacuum in QED, leads to creation of the electron - hole plasma at ballistic times of order tnlt_{nl}.     The process of coherent creation of particle - hole excitations by an electric field in graphene is quantitatively described beyond linear response. We calculate the evolution of current density, number of pairs and energy in ballistic regime for electric field E using the tight binding model. While for small ballistic flight times the current is linear in E and independent of time, for larger ballistic times the current increases and finally at yet larger times Bloch oscillations set in. It is shown that the number of pairs follows the 2D generalization of the Schwinger's creation rate only on certain time segments with a prefactor different from that obtained using the asymptotic formula.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

Then, catalytic SAM as a target for drugs and approaches to utilise SAM as a cofactor in synthesis is introduced with different recycling approaches evaluated. The use of SAM analogues are also described. Finally O-, N-, C- and S-MTs, their synthetic applications and potential for compound diversification is given

    Aldehyde-hydrate equilibrium in nucleobase 2-oxoethyl derivatives: An NMR, ESI-MS and theoretical study

    N-2-oxoethyl derivatives of nucleobases are useful starting materials for the preparation of potentially active nucleoside analogues. The 1HNMR, 13CNMR, DEPT and ESI-MS spectra of adenine and thymine N-2-oxoethyl derivatives reveal that the different species in equilibrium exist mainly in two forms: aldehyde and hydrate. The NMR spectra show that the equilibrium is shifted towards the hydrate form in water-DMSO 2:1, giving equilibrium constants of 8.3 and 5.3 for adenine and thymine derivatives, respectively. ESI-MS experiments show the dependence of equilibrium shift on pH: in the case of the thymine derivative, the effect on the equilibrium is more important than in the case of the adenine derivative; this difference is explained considering different protonation sites in both structures. All assumptions are supported by theoretical calculations, which suggest the important role played by solvent in the stabilization of molecular structures and equilibrium shift. All aspects analyzed in this work are very important in order to understand the further reactivity of these nucleobase derivatives.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

    Comparison of immune response to lipopolysaccharide of rabbit does selected for litter size at weaning or founded for reproductive longevity

    To evaluate differences in maternal lines to the immune response of reproductive rabbit does, a total of 64 animals of two different lines: (1) founded for hyper-longevity and litter size criteria (LP) and (2) selected for litter size at weaning (V) were used. Females were subjected to three different reproductive efforts: post-partum (PP) mating at first lactation and 9 kits during the second; post-weaning (PW) mating at first lactation and 9 kits during the second; and PW mating at first lactation and 5 kits during the second. At second weaning (30 days PP), an acute response was induced by intravenous infusion of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LP females seemed to be lower affected during the hyper-acute phase than V females, showing lower plasma glucose content at 1.5 h post infusion (pi) and rectal temperature at 6 h pi; and showed higher ulterior immune response, with higher levels of C-reactive protein at 48 h pi and haptoglobin in plasma from 24 h pi. Survival test conferred a higher risk of culling for V than for LP females during the first hours after challenge. These results may suggest that, regarding immune response to LPS challenge, foundation by hyper-longevity productive criteria lead to obtain a more robust population of rabbit does, characterized by improved response ability.     Active Drumming Experience Increases Infants' Sensitivity to Audiovisual Synchrony during Observed Drumming Actions

    In the current study, we examined the role of active experience on sensitivity to multisensory synchrony in six-month-old infants in a musical context. In the first of two experiments, we trained infants to produce a novel multimodal effect (i.e., a drum beat) and assessed the effects of this training, relative to no training, on their later perception of the synchrony between audio and visual presentation of the drumming action. In a second experiment, we then contrasted this active experience with the observation of drumming in order to test whether observation of the audiovisual effect was as effective for sensitivity to multimodal synchrony as active experience. Our results indicated that active experience provided a unique benefit above and beyond observational experience, providing insights on the embodied roots of (early) music perception and cognition

    Sex Differences in Social Attention in Infants at Risk for Autism

    We studied visual attention to emotional faces in 10-month-old infant siblings of children with ASD (ASD-sibs; N = 70) and a siblings of typically developing children (N = 29) using static stimuli. Contrary to our predictions, we found no evidence for atypical gaze behavior in ASD-sibs when boys and girls were analyzed together. However, a sex difference was found in ASD-sibs' visual attention to the mouth. Male ASD-sibs looked more at the mouth across emotions compared to male controls and female ASD-sibs. In contrast, female ASD-sibs looked less at the mouth compared to female controls. These findings suggest that some aspects of early emerging atypical social attention in ASD-sibs may be sex specific
