This contribution deals with intercultural communication in the frame of German-Senegalese cultural transfer through literature and translation. In this sense, I point out the importance of the translators of Senegalese literature as well as its reception in the German speaking area. The poet president Léopold Sédar Senghor played an important role in this context. He was much interested in German language, culture and civilization, and his literary works were translated into German as well. sing my analysis on theoretical approaches related to intercultural issues linked to translation, I examine the transmission of cultural information (in relation with place, history, society, religion, interaction etc.) in the translation of Mariama Bâ´s novel 'Une si longue lettre (Ein so langer Brief: ein afrikanisches Frauenschicksal) in the German-Senegalese context
Salvatierra Bellido, B.; Márquez Ruiz, A.; Luque Sánchez, S.; Nieto Martínez, A.; Acosta Galán, J. (2015). Peripheral organ equivalent dose estimation procedure in proton therapy
The aim of this work is to present a reproducible methodology for the evaluation of total equivalent doses in organs during proton therapy facilities. The methodology is based on measuring the dose equivalent in representative locations inside an anthropomorphic phantom where photon and neutron dosimeters were inserted. The Monte Carlo simulation was needed for obtaining neutron energy distribution inside the phantom. The methodology was implemented for a head irradiation case in the passive proton beam of iThemba Labs (South Africa). Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD)-600 and TLD-700 pairs were used as dosimeters inside the phantom and GEANT code for simulations. In addition, Bonner sphere spectrometry was performed inside the treatment room to obtain the neutron spectra, some relevant neutron dosimetric quantities per treatment Gy, and a percentual distribution of neutron fluence and ambient dose equivalent in four energy groups, at two locations. The neutron spectrum at one of those locations was also simulated so that a reasonable agreement between simulation and measurement allowed a validation of the simulation. Results showed that the total out-of-field dose equivalent inside the phantom ranged from 1.4 to 0.28 mSv/Gy, mainly due to the neutron contribution and with a small contribution from photons, 10% on average. The order of magnitude of the equivalent dose in organs was similar, displaying a slow reduction in values as the organ is farther from the target volume. These values were in agreement with those found by other authors in other passive beam facilities under similar irradiation and measurement conditions

Radially extended kinematics and stellar populations of the massive ellipticals NGC1600, NGC4125 and NGC7619. Constraints on the outer dark halo density profile
We present high quality long slit spectra along the major and minor axes out
to 1.5-2 Re (14-22 kpc) of three bright elliptical galaxies (NGC1600, NGC4125,
NGC7619) obtained at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). We derive stellar
kinematic profiles and Lick/IDS indices (Hbeta, Mgb, Fe5015, Fe5270, Fe5335,
Fe5406). Moreover, for NGC4125 we derive gas kinematics and emission line
strengths. We model the absorption line strengths using Simple Stellar
Populations models that take into account the variation of [\alpha/Fe] and
derive ages, total metallicity and element abundances. Overall, we find that
the three galaxies have old and [\alpha/Fe] overabundant stellar populations
with no significant gradients. The metallicity is supersolar at the center with
a strong negative radial gradient. For NGC4125, several pieces of evidence
point to a recent dissipational merger event. We calculate the broad band color
profiles with the help of SSP models. All of the colors show sharp peaks at the
center of the galaxies, mainly caused by the metallicity gradients, and agree
well with the measured colors. Using the Schwarzschild's axisymmetric orbit
superposition technique, we model the stellar kinematics to constrain the dark
halos of the galaxies. We use the tight correlation between the Mgb strength
and local escape velocity to set limits on the extent of the halos by testing
different halo sizes. Logarithmic halos - cut at 60 kpc -minimize the overall
scatter of the Mgb-Vesc relation. Larger cutoff radii are found if the dark
matter density profile is decreasing more steeply at large radii.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
AKT Signaling Mediates IGF-I Survival Actions on Otic Neural Progenitors
Background: Otic neurons and sensory cells derive from common progenitors whose transition into mature cells requires the coordination of cell survival, proliferation and differentiation programmes. Neurotrophic support and survival of post-mitotic otic neurons have been intensively studied, but the bases underlying the regulation of programmed cell death in immature proliferative otic neuroblasts remains poorly understood. The protein kinase AKT acts as a node, playing a critical role in controlling cell survival and cell cycle progression. AKT is activated by trophic factors, including insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), through the generation of the lipidic second messenger phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Here we have investigated the role of IGF-dependent activation of the PI3K-AKT pathway in maintenance of otic neuroblasts.
Methodology/Principal Findings: By using a combination of organotypic cultures of chicken (Gallus gallus) otic vesicles and acoustic-vestibular ganglia, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, we show that IGF-I-activation of AKT protects neural progenitors from programmed cell death. IGF-I maintains otic neuroblasts in an undifferentiated and proliferative state, which is characterised by the upregulation of the forkhead box M1 (FoxM1) transcription factor. By contrast, our results indicate that post-mitotic p27Kip-positive neurons become IGF-I independent as they extend their neuronal processes. Neurons gradually reduce their expression of the Igf1r, while they increase that of the neurotrophin receptor, TrkC.
Conclusions/Significance: Proliferative otic neuroblasts are dependent on the activation of the PI3K-AKT pathway by IGF-I for survival during the otic neuronal progenitor phase of early inner ear development
Spain: Underwater Exploration on a Narrow Continental Shelf
In spite of Spain’s long coastline (nearly 8000 km) and its well-established tradition in underwater archaeology, the prehistoric settlement of the continental shelf is practically
unknown with very few finds. Underwater research has focused on naval archaeology and, until very recently, no attempt had been made to look for prehistoric underwater sites. In the past decade, new research projects have been launched to explore selected areas on the Cantabrian shelf and offshore of Gibraltar. This chapter summarises the currently available evidence of submerged prehistoric archaeology and the preliminary results of these new project
