El pájaro solitario sanjuanista: una aproximación

    Get PDF
Making a commentary on verses 71-72 of his Cántico espiritual, Saint John of the Cross talks about a “lonely bird”, which he endows of five rare attributes. In the past years, scholarship has attempeted to explain and discover the textual origins of this poetic symbol, which the poet takes up again in his Dichos de luz y amor. The paper tackles the different Studies on this issue –the biblical thesis, the Phoenix, the blue rock thrush and the sufism–, and raises a new interpretation, that is, the lonely bird under the light of neoplatonism, whic does not necessarily exclude previous interpretations

    Get PDF
This study covers the relation between holiness and world in five European writers of the first half of the twentieth century: two Spanish (Maragall y Maeztu) and three French (Péguy, Maritain y Bernanos). In a period marked by intellectual, artistic, and political revolutions, as well as by the syncretism and integration of the opposites, these writers succeeded in reconciling concepts and realities (holiness and world) which have been deemed conflicting throughout many centuries. These writers, by virtue of their intellectual, creative, and spiritual vigor, contributed to the advance of theology and Catholic spirituality

Contrasting growth and water use strategies in four co-occurring Mediterranean tree species revealed by concurrent measurements of sap flow and stem diameter variations

Drought limits tree water use and growth of Mediterranean trees. However, growth and water use strate-gies are rarely addressed simultaneously across species and drought conditions. Here, we investigatethe link between stem diameter variations and sap flow in four co-existing Mediterranean trees (Pinushalepensis Mill., Quercus pubescens Willd., Quercus ilex L. and Arbutus unedo L.), under relatively wet (2011)and dry (2012) conditions. Continuous stem diameter variations were converted to basal area increment(BAI) and de-trended to estimate tree water deficit ( W), an indicator of stem hydration. P. halepensis andQ. pubescens showed the most and the least conservative sap flow density (JS) regulation under drought, respectively, with Q. ilex and A.unedo showing intermediate drought responses. All species, except A.unedo, showed some between-year variability in the environmental control of JS. Seasonal stem shrink-age in response to drought (i.e., increasing W) and subsequent trunk rehydration after rainfall (i.e.,decreasing W) occurred in all species. Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and soil moisture ( ) interacted todetermine seasonal variation in W. Interestingly, in the dry year, 2012, more species-specific differ-ences were found in the responses of W to and VPD. Across species, JSand W began to decline atsimilar soil moisture thresholds, underpinning the tight link between JSand W under varying droughtconditions. Annual BAI decreased proportionally more than tree-level transpiration (JT) between the wet(2011) and the dry (2012) year, hence growth-based WUE (WUEBAI= BAI/JT) decreased for all species, albeit less acutely for P. halepensis. Overall, despite their contrasting leaf habit and wood type, the stud-ied Mediterranean tree species show coordinated responses of transpiration, water storage dynamicsand growth-based WUE which allow them to cope with seasonal and interannual drought

A Three-Dimensional Dynamic Supramolecular "Sticky Fingers" Organic Framework.

Engineering high-recognition host-guest materials is a burgeoning area in basic and applied research. The challenge of exploring novel porous materials with advanced functionalities prompted us to develop dynamic crystalline structures promoted by soft interactions. The first example of a pure molecular dynamic crystalline framework is demonstrated, which is held together by means of weak "sticky fingers" van der Waals interactions. The presented organic-fullerene-based material exhibits a non-porous dynamic crystalline structure capable of undergoing single-crystal-to-single-crystal reactions. Exposure to hydrazine vapors induces structural and chemical changes that manifest as toposelective hydrogenation of alternating rings on the surface of the [60]fullerene. Control experiments confirm that the same reaction does not occur when performed in solution. Easy-to-detect changes in the macroscopic properties of the sample suggest utility as molecular sensors or energy-storage materials

DNA methyltransferase 3B regulates duration of neural crest production via repression of Sox10

    Get PDF
Neural crest stem cells arise within the central nervous system but then undergo an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition to migrate away and contribute to the peripheral nervous system and craniofacial skeleton. Here we show that DNA methyltransferase 3B (DNMT3B) is responsible for the loss of competence of dorsal neural tube cells to generate emigrating neural crest cells. DNMT3B knockdown results in up-regulation of neural crest markers, prolonged neural crest emigration, and subsequent precocious neuronal differentiation of the trigeminal ganglion. We find that DNMT3B binds to the promoter of Sox10, known to be important for neural crest emigration and lineage acquisition. Bisulfite sequencing further reveals methylation of the Sox10 promoter region upon cessation of emigration in normal embryos, whereas this mark is reduced after DNMT3B loss. Taken together, these results reveal the importance of DNA methylation in regulating the ability of neural tube cells to produce neural crest cells and the timing of peripheral neuron differentiation

Attitudes of undergraduate nursing students to cultural diversity: (Portuguese-Spanish) in a transboundary context.

    Get PDF
Our main goal was to identify the attitudes of nursing students to cultural diversity in a healthcare setting, and find the potential relationship between this and the students' national background and their knowledge of cultural diversity. A descriptive observational study comparing two culturally different populations within a cross-border area (Algarve-Huelva) was conducted. The attitudes of the participants were measured across six categories: this study will describe the most significant ones. The cultural context is essential to the development of attitudes to immigration. Nursing care is a communicative act and encountering the "other" the core of the nursing professionals' work. Prognostic value of replication errors on chromosomes 2p and 3p in non-small-cell lung cancer

As chromosomes 2p and 3p are frequent targets for genomic instability in lung cancer, we have addressed whether alterations of simple (CA)n DNA repeats occur in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at early stages. We have analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay replication errors (RER) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at microsatellites mapped on chromosomes 2p and 3p in 64 paired tumour-normal DNA samples from consecutively resected stage I, II or IIIA NSCLC. DNA samples were also examined for K-ras and p53 gene mutations by PCR-single-stranded conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis and cyclic sequencing, as well as their relationship with clinical outcome. Forty-two of the 64 (66%) NSCLC patients showed RER at single or multiple loci. LOH was detected in 23 tumours (36%). Among patients with stage I disease, the 5-year survival rate was 80% in those whose tumours had no evidence of RER and 26% in those with RER (P = 0.005). No correlation was established between RER phenotype and LOH, K-ras or p53 mutations. RER remained a strong predictive factor (hazard ratio for death, 2.89; 95% confidence interval, 2.23-3.79; P = 0.002) after adjustment for all other evaluated factors, including p53, K-ras, LOH, histological type, tumour differentiation and TNM stage, suggesting that microsatellite instability on chromosomes 2p and 3p may play a role in NSCLC progression through a different pathway from the traditional tumour mechanisms of oncogene activation and/or tumour-suppressor gene inactivation

What can metazoan parasites reveal about the taxonomy of Scomber japonicus Houttuyn in the coast of South America and Madeira Islands?

    Get PDF
The metazoan parasites of four populations of the chub mackerel Scomber japonicus were analysed from two localities in the Atlantic Ocean (Madeira Islands, Portugal, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and two localities in the Pacific Ocean (Callao, Peru, and Antofagasta, Chile), collected during 2002 and 2003. A total of 373 fish specimens were studied and 34 metazoan parasite species were obtained. Parasites identified from the populations of chub mackerel studied could be separated into three categories: parasites with a wide distribution, present in the Pacific and Atlantic, parasites proper of the Pacific Ocean and parasites proper of the Atlantic Ocean. The analyses of some highly specific parasites of the genus Scomber (i.e. monogeneans of the genus Kuhnia and didymozoid digeneans) strongly suggest the need for a revision of the taxonomic status of chub mackerels from the Atlantic and Pacific coast of America. The results demonstrated the usefulness of parasites as adequate tools to clarify the taxonomic status of their hosts. We thank R.
