Controller-free hand tracking for grab-and-place tasks in immersive virtual reality: Design elements and their empirical study

Get PDF
Hand tracking enables controller-free interaction with virtual environments, which can, compared to traditional handheld controllers, make virtual reality (VR) experiences more natural and immersive. As naturalness hinges on both technological and user-based features, fine-tuning the former while assessing the latter can be used to increase usability. For a grab-and-place use case in immersive VR, we compared a prototype of a camera-based hand tracking interface (Leap Motion) with customized design elements to the standard Leap Motion application programming interface (API) and a traditional controller solution (Oculus Touch). Usability was tested in 32 young healthy participants, whose performance was analyzed in terms of accuracy, speed and errors as well as subjective experience. We found higher performance and overall usability as well as overall preference for the handheld controller compared to both controller-free solutions. While most measures did not differ between the two controller-free solutions, the modifications made to the Leap API to form our prototype led to a significant decrease in accidental drops. Our results do not support the assumption of higher naturalness for hand tracking but suggest design elements to improve the robustness of controller-free object interaction in a grab-and-place scenario

Noncommutative Figa-Talamanca-Herz algebras for Schur multipliers

Full text link
We introduce a noncommutative analogue of the Fig\'a-Talamanca-Herz algebra Ap(G)A_p(G) on the natural predual of the operator space Mp,cb\frak{M}_{p,cb} of completely bounded Schur multipliers on Schatten space SpS_p. We determine the isometric Schur multipliers and prove that the space Mp\frak{M}_{p} of bounded Schur multipliers on Schatten space SpS_p is the closure in the weak operator topology of the span of isometric multipliers.Comment: 24 pages; corrected typo

Shift invariant preduals of ℓ1(ℤ)

The Banach space ℓ1(ℤ) admits many non-isomorphic preduals, for example, C(K) for any compact countable space K, along with many more exotic Banach spaces. In this paper, we impose an extra condition: the predual must make the bilateral shift on ℓ1(ℤ) weak*-continuous. This is equivalent to making the natural convolution multiplication on ℓ1(ℤ) separately weak*-continuous and so turning ℓ1(ℤ) into a dual Banach algebra. We call such preduals <i>shift-invariant</i>. It is known that the only shift-invariant predual arising from the standard duality between C0(K) (for countable locally compact K) and ℓ1(ℤ) is c0(ℤ). We provide an explicit construction of an uncountable family of distinct preduals which do make the bilateral shift weak*-continuous. Using Szlenk index arguments, we show that merely as Banach spaces, these are all isomorphic to c0. We then build some theory to study such preduals, showing that they arise from certain semigroup compactifications of ℤ. This allows us to produce a large number of other examples, including non-isometric preduals, and preduals which are not Banach space isomorphic to c0

Unusual T_c variation with hole concentration in Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+\delta}

Full text link
We have investigated the TcT_c variation with the hole concentration pp in the La-doped Bi 2201 system, Bi2_2Sr2x_{2-x}Lax_xCuO6+δ_{6+\delta}. It is found that the Bi 2201 system does not follow the systematics in TcT_c and pp observed in other high-TcT_c cuprate superconductors (HTSC's). The TcT_c vs pp characteristics are quite similar to what observed in Zn-doped HTSC's. An exceptionally large residual resistivity component in the inplane resistivity indicates that strong potential scatterers of charge carriers reside in CuO2_2 planes and are responsible for the unusual TcT_c variation with pp, as in the Zn-doped systems. However, contrary to the Zn-doped HTSC's, the strong scatter in the Bi 2201 system is possibly a vacancy in the Cu site.Comment: RevTeX, 3 figures, to be published in the Physical Review

Trainee teachers' use of blogs as private reflections for professional development

Get PDF
A collaborative research project between Sheffield Hallam University and Nottingham Trent University in the UK investigated the use of blogs with trainee teachers as an alternative to reflective paper-based diaries. An action research case study, involving focus groups of post-graduate (secondary) trainee teachers (one group from each University) was undertaken to determine attitudes and perceptions of blogging as an appropriate tool to support reflective professional development. The findings indicate that the use of blogs by the trainee teachers had a positive impact overall, and provide concrete evidence of their development as emerging professional teachers. Unlike traditional paper-based systems, blogs provided ongoing opportunities for the tutor to assist the trainees in their development as reflective practitioners. This paper seeks to share the findings of this research which the authors believe could be applicable to other areas of Higher Education.</p

Notions of Infinity in Quantum Physics

Full text link
In this article we will review some notions of infiniteness that appear in Hilbert space operators and operator algebras. These include proper infiniteness, Murray von Neumann's classification into type I and type III factors and the class of F{/o} lner C*-algebras that capture some aspects of amenability. We will also mention how these notions reappear in the description of certain mathematical aspects of quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and the theory of superselection sectors. We also show that the algebra of the canonical anti-commutation relations (CAR-algebra) is in the class of F{/o} lner C*-algebras.Comment: 11 page

Emergent Strain of Human Adenovirus Endemic in Iowa

Get PDF
We evaluated 76 adenovirus type 7 (Ad7) isolates collected in Iowa from 1992 to 2002 and found that genome type Ad7d2 became increasingly prevalent. By 2002, it had supplanted all other Ad7 genome types. The association of Ad7d2 with severe illness and death calls for heightened public health concern
