Introduction: “Obesity” is considered a feature of
youth with DS but whether “low physical fitness” is also a
feature is unknown.
Objective: The aim of this case-control study was to
compare the levels of fatness and fitness in adolescents
with and without DS.
Methods: Participants included 17 (5 girls) adolescents
with DS aged 12-18 years and a control group of 94 (45
girls) adolescents without DS aged 12-16 years. The
ALPHA health-related fitness test battery for children
and adolescents was selected to assess fatness and fitness
in both groups.
Results: There were no differences in levels of fatness
between groups (all P > 0.27). Adolescents with DS had
lower levels of fitness in all the tests than adolescents
without DS (all P < 0.001).
Conclusion: Adolescents with DS have similar levels of
fatness and lower levels of fitness than their peers without

Fire-related debris flows in the Iberian Range, Spain
38 páginas, 2 tablas, 11 figuras[EN] Debris flows occurred three weeks after a wildfire in August 1986 in the Najerilla River valley in the Iberian Range, northern Spain. The flows were triggered by a brief, intense rainstorm (approximately 25 mm h− 1 over 15 min) in a small area with steep slopes covered by a thick colluvium of quartzite clasts. This storm resulted in the development of several unconfined hillslope debris flows and the formation of an alluvial fan at the mouth of the Pítare stream, which partially blocked the Najerilla River. We analysed the conditions that led to the development of the debris flows, and estimated the rainfall threshold for the debris flows to occur as well as the total volume of mobilised sediment. Four factors contributed to the debris flows: (i) the occurrence of a rainstorm three weeks after a wildfire, which had removed the plant cover from the soil; (ii) the steep slopes in the area (> 30°), which were the most affected by debris flows; (iii) the presence of quartzite scarps on the hillslopes, which favoured the development of a ‘firehose effect’ involving channelised surface runoff; and (iv) the low plasticity index values of the fine material of the colluvium (indices of 7 to 8), which enabled rapid liquefaction. Estimates of rainfall intensity derived from the estimated peak flow in the Pítare stream suggests that around 80 mm of rainfall fell in approximately 15 min, although this is clearly an overestimated value given the high proportion of sediment load transported during the peak flow. Various equations estimated a rainfall-threshold of approximately 25 mm h− 1 considering a concentration time of 15 min. The total sediment transported by the debris flows was 10,500 m3 (15,750 Mg, 6800 Mg km− 2), and the Pítare stream alone transported a minimum of 4000 m3 (6000 Mg, 2500 Mg km− 2). These results suggest that the rainfall threshold for initiating debris flows decreases following a wildfire, such that an ordinary rainstorm is able to trigger a severe erosion and sediment transport event. Given the absence of fresh landslide scars on the hillslopes, the origin of the fire-related debris flows in the Najerilla River valley appears to have been directly linked to increased rates of overland flow having a greater effect than infiltration for triggering debris flows.Support for this research was provided by the projects PROBASE (CGL2006-11619/HID) and INDICA (CGL2011-27753-C02-01 and CGL2011-27753-C02-02), which was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, and ACQWA (FP7-ENV-2007-1-212250), which was financed by the European Commission.
total algo superior a 250 mm.
debieron registrarse unos 500 m³s-1
incluyendo los sedimentos transportados,
para una cuenca de 18.8 km². Las
evaluaciones realizadas permiten estimar
gran irregularidad espacial y temporal.[EN] The characteristics of precipitation
and peak flow during the Arás catastrophe
in the evening of August, 7,
1996, are studied. The storm was very
intense over the whole basin, and
especially in a small area of the Betés
subbasin, in which intensities greater
than 500 mm.hr-1 have been estimated,
with a total amount of precipitation
somewhat higher than 250 mm. In
the final stretch of the Arás ravine a
discharge of 500 m³s-1, including the
sediments, have been estimated for a
basin of 18.8 km².. Seventy five per
cent of the discharge carne from the
Betés subbasin, which represents only
28.7 per cent of the basin. The volume
of sediments mobilized in the final
stretch of the Arás ravine has also been
evaluated. Finally, the rainstorm event
has been placed in a larger spatial and
temporal context. The catastrophe of
the Arás ravine confirms the lirnitations
of existing systems of probabilistic
analysis, due to the spatial and temporal
irregularity of storm events.Peer reviewe

Replication forks stall at different DNA obstacles such as those originated by transcription. Fork stalling can lead to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) that will be preferentially repaired by homologous recombination when the sister chromatid is available. The Rrm3 helicase is a replisome component that promotes replication upon fork stalling, accumulates at highly transcribed regions and prevents not only transcription-induced replication fork stalling but also transcription-associated hyper-recombination. This led us to explore the possible role of Rrm3 in the repair of DSBs when originating at the passage of the replication fork. Using a mini-HO system that induces mainly single-stranded DNA breaks, we show that rrm3Δ cells are defective in DSB repair. The defect is clearly seen in sister chromatid recombination, the major repair pathway of replication-born DSBs. Our results indicate that Rrm3 recruitment to replication-born DSBs is crucial for viability, uncovering a new role for Rrm3 in the repair of broken replication forks. This work was supported by grants from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Innovation (BFU2013-42918), the European Union (FEDER), the European Research Council (ERC2014 AdG669898 TARLOOP), and the Junta de Andalucía (BIO1238). Characterization of the different behaviours exhibited by juvenile flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758) under rearing conditions
Aim of study: To describe the common behaviour of flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) under rearing conditions.
Area of study: Tepic, Mexico.
Material and methods: Behaviours exhibited by mullets were videorecorded with submersible cameras installed inside of three tanks. A total of 690 min per day (07:30 - 18:30 h) were recorded per tank during a week. Afterwards, the different behaviours exhibited by juvenile M. cephalus were described, identified and characterized in an ethogram and grouped into two categories: a) locomotion, including three different observed behaviours (resting, swimming and fast swimming) and b) feeding, including three behaviours (surface feeding, bottom feeding and rubbing). Each of the behavioural variables were quantified.
Main results: M. cephalus is a species with a constant locomotion associated to feeding, since fish showed continuous movement during most of day light period. On the contrary, fish exhibited reduced movement during dark periods. Mullets were observed to be a non-aggressive fish species under conditions of the present study, since the absence of dominance and aggression towards conspecifics was observed, which suggested a high predisposition for adaptation to captivity. Finally, behavioural frequencies of grey mullet juveniles were similar among the three tanks for most of the behavioural variables analysed (p>0.05) except for the variable bottom feeding (p=0.02).
Research highlights: Results from this study could be of interest for the aquaculture industry to optimize rearing techniques and welfare for the production of grey mullet.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Role of CaCO3° neutral pair in calcium carbonate crystallization
The molecular structure of the units that get incorporated into the nuclei of the crystalline phase and sustain their growth is a fundamental issue in the pathway from a supersaturated solution to the formation of crystals. Using a fluorescent dye we have recorded the variation of the pH value in time along a gel where CaCl2 and NaHCO3 counter-diffuse to crystallize CaCO3. The same pH–space–time distribution maps were also computationally obtained using a chemical speciation code (phreeqc). Using data arising from this model we investigated the space-time evolution of the activity of the single species (ions and ion pairs) involved in the crystallization process. Our combined results suggest that, whatever the pathway from solution to crystals, the neutral pair CaCO3° is a key species in the CaCO3 precipitation system.European Research Council (European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) grant agreement no 340863, and Spanish MINECO grants MAT2014-60533-R

Internal friction associated with ε martensite in shape memory steels produced by casting route and through additive manufacturing: Influence of thermal cycling on the martensitic transformation
Among the different families of shape memory alloys (SMA), the Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni alloys have attracted a renewed interest because of its low cost, high corrosion resistance and high recovery strength during the shape memory effect, and the new technologies of additive manufacturing offer unforeseen possibilities for this family of SMA. In the present work, the reversible gamma - epsilon martensitic transformation (MT), responsible for the shape memory effect, is studied in two Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni alloys with high (20.2 wt%) and low (15.8 wt%) Mn content, produced by the conventional route of casting and rolling, in comparison with the MT in another similar alloy, with intermediate Mn content (19.4 wt%), which was produced by gas atomization and additive manufacturing through laser metal deposition. The forward and reverse gamma - epsilon MT is studied by mechanical spectroscopy through the internal friction spectra and the dynamic modulus variation, together with a parallel microstructural characterization including in-situ observation of the gamma - epsilon MT during cooling and heating at the scanning electron microscope. The evolution of the transformed fraction of epsilon martensite, evaluated through the integral area of the internal friction peak, was followed along thermal cycling in all three alloys. Both, the internal friction and the electron microscopy studies show that the epsilon martensite amount increases very fast during the first few cycles, and then decreases with a tendency towards its stabilization for many tens of cycles. The results show that the gamma - epsilon MT is more stable on cycling in the additive manufactured sample than in the conventionally processed samples, opening new avenues for designing shape memory steels to be specifically processed through additive manufacturing. This work was supported by the ELKARTEK-CEMAP (KK-2020/00047) project from the Industry Department of the Basque Government, and the GIU-17/071 from the University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU. Using Kinect to classify Parkinson's disease stages related to severity of gait impairment
Background: Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease associated with motor problems such
as gait impairment. Different systems based on 3D cameras, accelerometers or gyroscopes have been used in related
works in order to study gait disturbances in PD. Kinect has also been used to build these kinds of systems, but
contradictory results have been reported: some works conclude that Kinect does not provide an accurate method of
measuring gait kinematics variables, but others, on the contrary, report good accuracy results.
Methods: In this work, we have built a Kinect-based system that can distinguish between different PD stages, and
have performed a clinical study with 30 patients suffering from PD belonging to three groups: early PD patients
without axial impairment, more evolved PD patients with higher gait impairment but without Freezing of Gait (FoG),
and patients with advanced PD and FoG. Those patients were recorded by two Kinect devices when they were
walking in a hospital corridor. The datasets obtained from the Kinect were preprocessed, 115 features identified, some
methods were applied to select the relevant features (correlation based feature selection, information gain, and
consistency subset evaluation), and different classification methods (decision trees, Bayesian networks, neural
networks and K-nearest neighbours classifiers) were evaluated with the goal of finding the most accurate method for
PD stage classification.
Results: The classifier that provided the best results is a particular case of a Bayesian Network classifier (similar to a
Naïve Bayesian classifier) built from a set of 7 relevant features selected by the correlation-based on feature selection
method. The accuracy obtained for that classifier using 10-fold cross validation is 93.40%. The relevant features are
related to left shin angles, left humerus angles, frontal and lateral bents, left forearm angles and the number of steps
during spin.
Conclusions: In this paper, it is shown that using Kinect is adequate to build a inexpensive and comfortable system
that classifies PD into three different stages related to FoG. Compared to the results of previous works, the obtained
accuracy (93.40%) can be considered high. The relevant features for the classifier are: a) movement and position of the
left arm, b) trunk position for slightly displaced walking sequences, and c) left shin angle, for straight walking
sequences. However, we have obtained a better accuracy (96.23%) for a classifier that only uses features extracted
from slightly displaced walking steps and spin walking steps. Finally, the obtained set of relevant features may lead to
new rehabilitation therapies for PD patients with gait problems
