    Cadmium, Copper, Lead, and Zinc Contents of Fish Marketed in NW Mexico

    To assess if they were within the safety limits for human consumption, the Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn contents of fish muscles, bought from separate stalls of the fish markets of nine cities of NW Mexico, were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Considering all fish and markets, the mean contents were Zn: 23.23±5.83, Cu: 1.72±0.63, Cd: 0.27 ± 0.07, and Pb: 0.09 ± 0.04 ”g/g (dry weight). Cu, Zn, and Pb did not reach levels of concern for human consumption, but the high Cd values determined in MazatlĂĄn (Mugil cephalus: 0.48±0.15; Diapterus spp.: 0.57±0.33; Lutjanus spp.: 0.72±0.12; small shark: 0.87±0.19 ”g/g dry weight) indicate that this was the only metal of concern for human health because the daily individual consumption of fish muscle to reach the PTDI would be within 0.27 and 0.41 kg

    Physicochemical Parameters, Mineral Composition, and Nutraceutical Properties of Ready-to-Drink Flavored-Colored Commercial Teas

    The physicochemical parameters, mineral composition, and nutraceutical properties of ready-to-drink ïŹ‚avored-colored commercial teas were analyzed in the present study. The pH of samples was slightly acidic (3.72 to 4.11), titratable acidity was low (0.092 to 0.174%), and color parameters were wide variable (pink, yellow, brown, and red). Citrus-ïŹ‚avored tea obtained the highest content of manganese (0.281mg·L−1), zinc (0.069mg·L−1), magnesium (2.92mg·L−1), potassium (62.65mg·L−1), and sodium (271.74mg·L−1), while lemon-, peach-, and blueberry-ïŹ‚avored teas obtained the highest levels of copper (0.035mg·L−1), iron (0.246mg·L−1), and calcium (18.21mg·L−1), respectively. Citrus, lemon-, sangria-, and rose petal-ïŹ‚avored teas obtained the highest content in total phenols (211.56mg·L−1), total ïŹ‚avonoids (65.46mg·L−1), total catechins (640.79mg·L−1), and total anthocyanins (640.79mg·L−1), respectively. Lemon- and rose petal-ïŹ‚avored teas showed the highest and lowest antioxidant capacity levels in DPPH (1096.00 to 118.77ÎŒmolTE·L−1), ABTS (1048.84 to 232.00ÎŒmolTE·L−1), and FRAP (1269.20 to 147.70ÎŒmolTE·L−1) assays. The levels of sodium reported in labels of all samples were lower than data obtained in our analysis.     Elective cancer surgery in COVID-19-free surgical pathways during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: An international, multicenter, comparative cohort study

    PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks

    Litopenaeus vannamei is the most important shrimp species in the traditional fishery of the coastal lagoons of the State of Sinaloa (NW Mexico), and most of the landings are consumed locally. Since these lagoons receive important volumes of agricultural, industrial and urban effluents, consumption of this shrimp could pose risks to human health. The mean content of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn determined in the hepatopancreas of shrimp from commercial landings from six lagoons of Sinaloa were higher than those of the muscle. There was a weak correlation between the Zn content of the two tissues (P.0.05) and the correlations were not significant for Cd, Cu and Pb (P>0.1). The concentrations found in the shrimp muscle were comparable or lower than those determined in commercial landings of different crustaceans from other geographic areas. According to our results the consumption of local shrimp poses no risks to human health.El camaron Litopenaeus vannamei es la especial mas importante en la pesqueria tradicional de las lagunas costeras del estado de Sinaloa (NW de Mexico), y la mayoria de sus capturas son consumidas localmente. Estas lagunas reciben grandes volumenes de efluentes agricolas, industriales y urbanos, por lo cual el consumo del camaron podria representar un riesgo para la salud humana. El contenido medio de Cd, Cu, Pb y Zn en el hepatopancreas de las capturas comerciales en seis lagunas de Sinaloa fue mayor que su respectivo valor en el musculo; no se observo una correlacion entre el contenido de Cd, Cu y Pb de los dos tejidos (P>0,1); en el caso de Zn la correlacion resulto significativa con un bajo nivel de probabilidad (P.0,05). La concentracion en el musculo del camaron fue similar o menor que la determinada en capturas comerciales de otros crustaceos en otras regiones. Con base en estos resultados, el consumo de los camarones locales no constituye un riesgo para la salud humana

    Dietary Fiber from Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and Soybean (Glycine max) Husk Byproducts as Baking Additives: Functional and Nutritional Properties

    Dietary fiber extracted from soybean and chickpea husks was used in the formulation of white bread. Treatments at different concentrations of dietary fiber (DF): bread + 0.15%, 0.3%, 1.5%, 2% soybean dietary fiber (SDF); bread + 0.15%, 0.3%, 1.5%, 2% chickpea dietary fiber (CDF), and a control treatment (Bread 0% DF) were used initially. However, the treatments that showed the greatest improvement effects were: bread + 2% SDF and bread + 2% CDF. The functionality and the nutritional contribution in the treatments were evaluated during four days of storage. The weight loss on the third day of storage was 30% higher in the control treatment than the products with 2% SDF and 2% CDF, while for the evaluation of firmness, the control obtained a hardness of 86 N, and treatments with 2% SDF and 2% CDF 60 N and 45 N, respectively. The presence of phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity was evident, mainly in the 2% SDF treatment, which had a total phenolic content of 1036, while in the Bread 0% DF it was 232 mgEAC/kg. The antioxidant activity for 2% SDF by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) was 1096, 2567, and 1800 µmolTE/kg, respectively. Dietary fiber addition favored the reduction of weight loss and firmness of white bread during storage. In addition, color was not affected and the content calcium, phenolics, as well as antioxidant capacity were slightly improved
