Carters and muleteers of Sajambre. The exchange of goods in the Oriental mountain of León (16th-18th centuries)
[EN] We analyse the middle and long distance muleteering and the transport

Aerosol radiative forcing efficiency in the UV region over southeastern Mediterranean: VELETA2002 campaign
Atmospheric aerosol effects on spectral global UV irradiance were evaluated during the VELETA2002 field campaign between 8 and 19 July 2002 in southeast Spain. In the first stage, seven UV spectroradiometer and six CIMEL Sun photometer measurements were carried out simultaneously, allowing them to be calibrated and intercompared. The mean ratio obtained for the global irradiance between the spectroradiometers, with regards to a reference instrument, ranges from 0.98 up to 1.04 with standard deviations that oscillate between ±0.01 and ±0.17. In particular, the two spectroradiometers used to obtain the aerosol forcing efficiencies have a ratio of 1.000 ± 0.001. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) obtained with the CIMEL Sun photometers has a standard deviation of lower than ±0.01 for all the channels. Under clear sky conditions, the diurnal aerosol forcing efficiency (DDFe) and fractional diurnal forcing efficiency (DFDFe) was calculated for two Mediterranean stations: Armilla (691 m.a.s.l.) within the boundary layer and Sabinas (2200 m.a.s.l) on the lower limit of the free troposphere and 25 km away from the first station. The DDFe values obtained at Armilla range between _2.72 ± 0.45 W m_2/t380 and _2.88 ± 0.45 W m_2/t440 and between _3.22 ± 0.61 W m_2/t380 and _3.40 ± 0.62 W m_2/t440 at Sabinas station; the DFDFe values range from _8.0 ± 1.4%/t380 to _8.6 ± 1.3%/t440 and _12.0 ± 2.3%/t380 to _12.6 ± 2.3%/t440 at the two stations, respectively. Also, an experimental aerosol transmittance factor, CT, used to obtain UV satellite derived products was found as a result of the dependence of the global irradiance with the AOD, under cloudless conditions. The average aerosol attenuation factor, h, obtained from the CT, is 6 ± 2% under weakly absorbing aerosols, with a negligible spectral dependence. This work was supported by CICYT–MCYT through the coordinated projects CGL2004-05984-C07-05 and CGL2005-03428-C04-02
LipoDDx: a mobile application for identification of rare lipodystrophy syndromes
Background: Lipodystrophy syndromes are a group of disorders characterized by a loss of adipose tissue once
other situations of nutritional deprivation or exacerbated catabolism have been ruled out. With the exception of the
HIV-associated lipodystrophy, they have a very low prevalence, which together with their large phenotypic
heterogeneity makes their identification difficult, even for endocrinologists and pediatricians. This leads to
significant delays in diagnosis or even to misdiagnosis.
Our group has developed an algorithm that identifies the more than 40 rare lipodystrophy subtypes described to
date. This algorithm has been implemented in a free mobile application, LipoDDx®. Our aim was to establish the
effectiveness of LipoDDx®.
Forty clinical records of patients with a diagnosis of certainty of most lipodystrophy subtypes were analyzed,
including subjects without lipodystrophy. The medical records, blinded for diagnosis, were evaluated by 13
physicians, 1 biochemist and 1 dentist. Each evaluator first gave his/her results based on his/her own criteria. Then,
a second diagnosis was given using LipoDDx®. The results were analysed based on a score table according to the
complexity of each case and the prevalence of the disease.
Results: LipoDDx® provides a user-friendly environment, based on usually dichotomous questions or choice of
clinical signs from drop-down menus. The final result provided by this app for a particular case can be a low/high
probability of suffering a particular lipodystrophy subtype. Without using LipoDDx® the success rate was 17 ± 20%,
while with LipoDDx® the success rate was 79 ± 20% (p < 0.01).Project financed with an intramural grant from the Xunta de Galicia, ED341b 2017/19. S.S-I was awarded a Research Fellowship, granted by the Asociación Española de Familiares y Afectados de Lipodistrofias (AELIP).S
A genome-wide association study follow-up suggests a possible role for PPARG in systemic sclerosis susceptibility
Introduction:
A recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) comprising a French cohort of systemic sclerosis (SSc) reported several non-HLA single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showing a nominal association in the discovery phase. We aimed to identify previously overlooked susceptibility variants by using a follow-up strategy.

Methods:
Sixty-six non-HLA SNPs showing a P value <10-4 in the discovery phase of the French SSc GWAS were analyzed in the first step of this study, performing a meta-analysis that combined data from the two published SSc GWASs. A total of 2,921 SSc patients and 6,963 healthy controls were included in this first phase. Two SNPs, PPARG rs310746 and CHRNA9 rs6832151, were selected for genotyping in the replication cohort (1,068 SSc patients and 6,762 healthy controls) based on the results of the first step. Genotyping was performed by using TaqMan SNP genotyping assays.
Results:
We observed nominal associations for both PPARG rs310746 (PMH = 1.90 × 10-6, OR, 1.28) and CHRNA9 rs6832151 (PMH = 4.30 × 10-6, OR, 1.17) genetic variants with SSc in the first step of our study. In the replication phase, we observed a trend of association for PPARG rs310746 (P value = 0.066; OR, 1.17). The combined overall Mantel-Haenszel meta-analysis of all the cohorts included in the present study revealed that PPARG rs310746 remained associated with SSc with a nominal non-genome-wide significant P value (PMH = 5.00 × 10-7; OR, 1.25). No evidence of association was observed for CHRNA9 rs6832151 either in the replication phase or in the overall pooled analysis.

Conclusion:
Our results suggest a role of PPARG gene in the development of SSc
The syndrome of central hypothyroidism and macroorchidism: IGSF1 controls TRHR and FSHB expression by differential modulation of pituitary TGFβ and Activin pathways
IGSF1 (Immunoglobulin Superfamily 1) gene defects cause central hypothyroidism and macroorchidism. However, the pathogenic mechanisms of the disease remain unclear. Based on a patient with a full deletion of IGSF1 clinically followed from neonate to adulthood, we investigated a common pituitary origin for hypothyroidism and macroorchidism, and the role of IGSF1 as regulator of pituitary hormone secretion. The patient showed congenital central hypothyroidism with reduced TSH biopotency, over-secretion of FSH at neonatal minipuberty and macroorchidism from 3 years of age. His markedly elevated inhibin B was unable to inhibit FSH secretion, indicating a status of pituitary inhibin B resistance. We show here that IGSF1 is expressed both in thyrotropes and gonadotropes of the pituitary and in Leydig and germ cells in the testes, but at very low levels in Sertoli cells. Furthermore, IGSF1 stimulates transcription of the thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (TRHR) by negative modulation of the TGFβ1-Smad signaling pathway, and enhances the synthesis and biopotency of TSH, the hormone secreted by thyrotropes. By contrast, IGSF1 strongly down-regulates the activin-Smad pathway, leading to reduced expression of FSHB, the hormone secreted by gonadotropes. In conclusion, two relevant molecular mechanisms linked to central hypothyroidism and macroorchidism in IGSF1 deficiency are identified, revealing IGSF1 as an important regulator of TGFβ/Activin pathways in the pituitary
Improving Scientific Knowledge of Mallorca Channel Seamounts (Western Mediterranean) within the Framework of Natura 2000 Network
The scientific exploration of Mallorca Channel seamounts (western Mediterranean) is
improving the knowledge of the Ses Olives (SO), Ausias March (AM), and Emile Baudot (EB)
seamounts for their inclusion in the Natura 2000 network. The aims are to map and characterize
benthic species and habitats by means of a geological and biological multidisciplinary approach:
high-resolution acoustics, sediment and rock dredges, beam trawl, bottom trawl, and underwater
imagery. Among the seamounts, 15 different morphological features were differentiated, highlighting
the presence of 4000 pockmarks, which are seafloor rounded depressions indicators of focused
fluid flow escapes, usually gas and/or water, from beneath the seabed sediments. So far, a total of
547 species or taxa have been inventoried, with sponges, fishes, mollusks, and crustaceans the most
diverse groups including new taxa and new geographical records. Up to 29 categories of benthic
habitats have been found, highlighting those included in the Habitats Directive: maërl beds on the
summits of AM and EB, pockmarks around the seamounts and coral reefs in their rocky escarpments
as well as fields of Isidella elongata on sedimentary bathyal bottoms. Trawling is the main demersal
fishery developed around SO and AM, which are targeted to deep water crustaceans: Parapenaeus
longirostris, Nephrops norvegicus, and Aristeus antennatus. This study provides scientific information
for the proposal of the Mallorca Channel seamounts as a Site of Community Importance and for its
final declaration as a Special Area of Conservation
