    Atuação do projeto “Práticas Sustentáveis” em uma Escola Agrícola através do Programa UniverCidades – UESB

    Este artigo é resultado do projeto de extensão intitulado “Projeto Práticas Sustentáveis”, um dos projetos do Programa UniverCidades, realizado pela Pró-Reitoria de Extensão (PROEX) da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (UESB). Objetivou capacitar quilombolas, índios, pequenos produtores rurais e estudantes de uma Escola Agrícola Comunitária do município de Ilhéus, Bahia. Dessa forma, buscou-se contribuir com a formação técnica sobre como produzir de forma sustentável, preparando-os para atuarem na sua comunidade. Foram utilizados, como metodologia, seminários e demonstrações das tecnologiasque devem ser usadas visando à sustentabilidade ambiental e econômica. Os resultados adquiridos por meio da atuação do Projeto foram satisfatórios em todas as etapas aplicadas, tanto nas palestras de abordagem teórica quanto nas práticas realizadas. Os participantes do curso puderam compartilhar um pouco do que foi aprendido em sala de forma clara, mostrando que todos os assuntosministrados foram bem absorvidos. Houve troca de conhecimento entre as coordenadoras do projeto e os integrantes da Escola Agrícola. Desenvolver um projeto de extensão e participar dele é uma experiência gratificante, decontribuir com a comunidade que está interagindo com o meio. Contudo, os bons resultados devem-se à integração entre as instituições de ensino (UESB e Escola Comunitária Agrícola), que não restringiram o conhecimento à universidade e foram capazes de levar informação à comunidade à respeito de atitudes ligadas à manutenção do equilíbrio entre sociedade e meio ambiente

    Evaluation of immunization with purine salvation pathway recombinant enzymes in Schistosoma mansoni worms and eggs in murine schistosomiasis

    According to the World Health Organization (WHO), on tropical and subtropical areas, schistosomiasis is the second parasitic disease of greater prevalence, in terms of morbidity and mortality, surpassed only by malaria. The Praziquantel (PZQ) is used for the treatment of this disease. However, reports of resistant strains reinforce the need to develop a new schistosomicidal drug. The infection by the parasite induces an inflammatory reaction of long duration due to the presence of adult worms living in the mesenteric venous system. The parasite lays eggs in small vessels of the submucosa of the intestines. These eggs are transported by the blood flow to the liver and they cause a granulomatous inflammatory reaction. A new approach can be held by the study of the following Schistosoma mansoni enzymes: purine nucleoside phosphorilase 1 (PNP), hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGPRT) and adenylate kinase (ADK). The parasite, incapable of synthetizing purine nucleotides through the de novo pathway, has multiple mechanisms to incorporate purine bases through the purine salvage pathway. In our results, we suggest that the immunization in Balb/c mice with the mentioned recombinant enzymes was capable of inducing a specific immune response, favoring the reduction of both the parasite load and number of eggs per gram of feces. The acquired data show that these enzymes can be considered as new targets to immunotherapy against schistosomiasis mansoni.CNPqFAPES

    Índice de risco cirúrgico e infecção de ferida operatória em puérperas submetidas a cesarianas.

    Backgound and Objectives: Considering the use of active surveillance assists in infection identification and the need for studies that use Surgical Risk Index (SRI) for assessment of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) in cesareans, this study aims to determine the incidence of SSI and analyze the applicability of SRI in the prediction of SSI in women in the postpartum period after being submitted to a cesarean section at a university hospital between April 2012 and March of 2013. Methods: Prospective cohort study. Information notifying SSI by active surveillance was collected daily from the medical records. After hospital discharge, the mothers were contacted through telephone calls to identify infection criteria within 30 days after the cesarean. Descriptive and comparative analyses were performed. The chi-square test was used to compare groups. Results: 737 cesareans were performed. Telephone contact was achieved with 507 (68.8%) women up to 30 days postpartum, with loss of follow-up of 230 cases (31.2%). The medical consultation in the post-partum period occurred with 188 (37.08%) women, with whom telephone contact was obtained, on average, 17.28 days (SD=8.39) after delivery. It was verified that 21 patients met the criteria for SSI, with a 4.14% rate. A total of 12 cases (57.1%) were classified as superficial SSI, 5 (23.8%) as deep and 4 (19.1%) as infection of organs and cavities. The SRI and its risk variables were not associated with SSI in patients submitted to cesarean sections. Conclusion: The SRI and the risk variables included in this index were not associated to SSI in patients submitted to cesarean sections. KEYWORDS: Cesarean Section; Surgical Wound Infection; Epidemiological Surveillance; Infection Control; Risk Index; Disease Notification.Justificativa e Objetivos: Tendo em vista que o emprego de vigilância ativa colabora na identificação de infecção e a necessidade de estudos que utilizem o Índice de Risco Cirúrgico (IRC) para avaliação de Infecção de Ferida Cirúrgica (IFC) em cesarianas este estudo objetiva determinar a incidência de IFC e analisar a aplicabilidade do IRC na predição das IFC em puérperas submetidas à cesariana em hospital universitário entre abril de 2012 e março de 2013. Métodos: Estudo de coorte prospectivo concorrente. Informações de notificação das IFC por vigilância ativa foram coletadas diariamente nos prontuários. Após alta hospitalar, as puérperas eram contatadas por ligações telefônicas para identificação de critérios de infecção até 30 dias após a cesariana. Análises descritivas e comparativas foram conduzidas. Para comparação dos grupos foi utilizado teste de Qui-quadrado. Resultados: Foram realizadas 737 cesarianas. Contato telefônico foi conseguido com 507 (68,8%) puérperas até 30 dias pós-parto, com perda de seguimento de 230 casos (31,2%). A consulta médica no puerpério ocorreu em 188 (37,08%) mulheres com quem foi obtido contato telefônico, em média, 17,28 dias (± 8,39) após o parto. Verificou-se que 21 casos preencheram critérios para IFC, taxa de 4,14%. Classificou-se 12 (57,1%) casos como infecção de ferida cirúrgica superficial, 5 (23,8%) como profunda e 4 (19,1%) de órgãos e cavidades. O IRC e suas variáveis de risco não foram associados à IFC em pacientes submetidas a cesarianas. Conclusão: O IRC e as variáveis de risco incluídas nesse índice não foram associados à IFC em pacientes submetidas a cesarianas.     Rare genetic variants involved in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: a multicenter Brazilian cohort study

    IntroductionDespite the existing data on the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), the factors that determine these patients evolution remain elusive. Answers may lie, at least in part, in genetics. It is currently under investigation that MIS-C patients may have an underlying innate error of immunity (IEI), whether of monogenic, digenic, or even oligogenic origin.MethodsTo further investigate this hypothesis, 30 patients with MIS-C were submitted to whole exome sequencing. ResultsAnalyses of genes associated with MIS-C, MIS-A, severe covid-19, and Kawasaki disease identified twenty-nine patients with rare potentially damaging variants (50 variants were identified in 38 different genes), including those previously described in IFNA21 and IFIH1 genes, new variants in genes previously described in MIS-C patients (KMT2D, CFB, and PRF1), and variants in genes newly associated to MIS-C such as APOL1, TNFRSF13B, and G6PD. In addition, gene ontology enrichment pointed to the involvement of thirteen major pathways, including complement system, hematopoiesis, immune system development, and type II interferon signaling, that were not yet reported in MIS-C.DiscussionThese data strongly indicate that different gene families may favor MIS- C development. Larger cohort studies with healthy controls and other omics approaches, such as proteomics and RNAseq, will be precious to better understanding the disease dynamics

    Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

    Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science.     Frailty in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease under conservative treatment

    Objective: to assess the frail level of the elderly with chronic kidney disease under conservative treatment. Methods: this is a cross-sectional and correlational study performed with 35 elderly. The frailty was assessed using the Edmonton Frail Scale instrument. A descriptive analysis and Spearman correlation coefficients were performed. Results: the frailty showed a minimal variation of 1 and maximum of 14, with a mean score 7.71 (±3.10). Women (8.05±3.551) and illiterates (9.57±2.637) showed a higher mean score of frail. By correlating the frail score, a moderate inverse correlation was found with years of study (p=0.033) and moderate positive correlation with some complications (p<0.05). Conclusion: the elderly with chronic kidney disease under conservative treatment showed some frailty degree, the highest levels were correlated with lower education and a higher number of clinical complications

    Homeostatic model assessment of adiponectin (HOMA-Adiponectin) as a surrogate measure of insulin resistance in adolescents: comparison with the hyperglycaemic clamp and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance

    Background Studies on adults have reported inverse association between the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) of adiponectin (HOMA-Adiponectin) and the insulin resistance assessed by the glucose clamp technique. To our knowledge, in the pediatric population this association has not been previously investigated. Objectives To evaluate the association between the HOMA-Adiponectin and the insulin resistance assessed by the glucose clamp technique in adolescents, and to compare the accuracy of HOMA-Adiponectin and HOMA-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) for identifying insulin resistance. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 56 adolescents (aged 1018 years). Insulin resistance was assessed using the HOMA-IR, HOMA-Adiponectin and the hyperglycaemic clamp technique. The clamp-derived insulin sensitivity index, HOMA-Adiponectin, and HOMA-IR were log-transformed to get closer to a normal distribution before analysis. Results In the multivariable linear regression analysis controlling for sex and Tanner stage, HOMA-Adiponectin was inversely associated with the clamp-derived insulin sensitivity index (unstandardized coefficient [B] = -0.441; P < 0.001). After additional adjustment for waist circumference-to-height ratio, this association remained significant (B = -0.349; P = < 0.001). Similar results were observed when HOMA-IR replaced HOMA-Adiponectin in the model (B = -1.049 and B = -0.968 after additional adjustment for waist circumference-to-height ratio); all P < 0.001. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for predicting insulin resistance was 0.712 (P = 0.02) for HOMA-Adiponectin and 0.859 (P < 0.0001) HOMA-IR. Conclusions The HOMA-Adiponectin was independently associated with insulin resistance and exhibited a good discriminatory power for predicting it.
