Watch-wearing as a marker of conscientiousness
Several aspects of an individual’s appearance have been shown to predict personality and related behaviour. While some of these cues are grounded in biology (e.g., the human face), other aspects of a person’s appearance can be actively controlled (e.g., clothing). In this paper, we consider a common fashion accessory, the wristwatch. In an exploratory sample (N > 100) and a confirmatory sample (N > 600), we compared big-five personality traits between individuals who do or do not regularly wear a standard wristwatch. Significantly higher levels of conscientiousness were observed in participants who wore a watch. In a third study (N = 85), watch wearers arrived significantly earlier to appointments in comparison to controls. These results are discussed in relation to enclothed cognition and the rise of wearable technology including smartwatches
Affordances of distractors and compatibility effects: a study with the computational model TRoPICALS
Seeing an object activates in the brain both visual and action codes. Crucial evidence supporting this view is offered by compatibility effect experiments (Ellis et al. (2007). J Exp Psychol: Hum Percept Perform): perception of an object can facilitate or interfere with the execution of an action (e.g. grasping) even when the viewer has no intention of interacting with the object. TRoPICALS (Caligiore et al. (2010). Psychol Rev) is a computational model developed to study compatibility effects. It provides a general hypothesis about the brain mechanisms underlying compatibility effects, suggesting that the top-down bias from prefrontal cortex (PFC), and its agreement or disagreement with the affordances of objects, plays a key role in such phenomena. Compatibility effects have been investigated in the presence of a distractor object in (Ellis et al. (2007). J Exp Psychol: Hum Percept Perform). The reaction times (RTs) results confirmed compatibility effects found in previous experiments without the distractor. Interestingly, results also showed an unexpected effect of the distractor: responding to a target with a grip compatible with the size of the distractor produced slower RTs in comparison to the incompatible case. Here we present an enhanced version of TRoPICALS that reproduces and explains these new results. This explanation is based on the idea according to which PFC might play a double role in its top-down guidance of action selection producing: (a) a positive bias in favor of the action requested by the experimental task; (b) a negative bias directed to inhibiting the action evoked by the distractor. The model also provides two testable predictions on the possible consequences on compatibilities effects of the target and distractor objects in Parkinsonian disease patients with damages of inhibitory circuits
Missed medical appointments during shifts to and from daylight saving time
Transitions into and out of Daylight Saving Time (DST) can provide insights into how a minor change to a regular sleep–wake cycle can inadvertently affect health. We examined the relationship between DST and missed medical appointments. Using a large dataset, the proportion of missed appointments were examined prior and post spring and autumn clock changes. As predicted, the number of missed medical appointments significantly increased following the spring (forward) clock change and the week of the clock change. This trend was reversed following the transition out of DST. The implications of scheduling appointments around DST to increase attendance are discussed
Third sector capacity building : the institutional embeddedness of supply
Previous articles in Voluntary Sector Review have documented the evolution of third sector capacity-building policy (Macmillan, 2011) and addressed the focus on ‘market-making’, characterised by a discursive shift since 2010 that favours demand-led over supply-led delivery models (Macmillan, 2013). This article builds on these articles by using data from the National Survey of Charities and Social Enterprises (NSCSE) to investigate the characteristics of third sector organisations on the supply side of the capacity-building ‘market’. We argue that the ambitions of the demand-led model need to be understood in the context of the embeddedness of these organisations. This is based on findings that suggests that, immediately prior to the identified discursive shift, a significant proportion of third sector capacity-building providers were embedded in the supply-led model through relationships with and funding from the public sector locally and nationally. This, we suggest, could thwart the ambitions of the demand-led model

The Parallelism Motifs of Genomic Data Analysis
Genomic data sets are growing dramatically as the cost of sequencing
continues to decline and small sequencing devices become available. Enormous
community databases store and share this data with the research community, but
some of these genomic data analysis problems require large scale computational
platforms to meet both the memory and computational requirements. These
applications differ from scientific simulations that dominate the workload on
high end parallel systems today and place different requirements on programming
support, software libraries, and parallel architectural design. For example,
they involve irregular communication patterns such as asynchronous updates to
shared data structures. We consider several problems in high performance
genomics analysis, including alignment, profiling, clustering, and assembly for
both single genomes and metagenomes. We identify some of the common
computational patterns or motifs that help inform parallelization strategies
and compare our motifs to some of the established lists, arguing that at least
two key patterns, sorting and hashing, are missing
Viewers base estimates of face matching accuracy on their own familiarity: Explaining the photo-ID paradox
Matching two different images of a face is a very easy task for familiar viewers, but much harder for unfamiliar viewers. Despite this, use of photo-ID is widespread, and people appear not to know how unreliable it is. We present a series of experiments investigating bias both when performing a matching task and when predicting other people’s performance. Participants saw pairs of faces and were asked to make a same/different judgement, after which they were asked to predict how well other people, unfamiliar with these faces, would perform. In four experiments we show different groups of participants familiar and unfamiliar faces, manipulating this in different ways: celebrities in experiments 1 to 3 and personally familiar faces in experiment 4. The results consistently show that people match images of familiar faces more accurately than unfamiliar faces. However, people also reliably predict that the faces they themselves know will be more accurately matched by different viewers. This bias is discussed in the context of current theoretical debates about face recognition, and we suggest that it may underlie the continued use of photo-ID, despite the availability of evidence about its unreliability
Action inhibition and affordances associated with a non-target object : An integrative review
This article reviews evidence for the special inhibitory mechanisms required to keep response activation related to affordances of a non-target object from evoking responses. This evidence presents that response activation triggered by affordances of a non-target are automatically inhibited resulting, for example, in decelerated response speed when the response is compatible with the affordance. The article also highlights the neural processes that differentiate these non-target-related affordance effects from other non-target-related effects such as the Eriksen flanker effect that-contrary to these affordance effects-present decelerated response speed when there is incompatibility between the non-target and the response. The article discusses the role of frontal executive mechanisms in controlling action planning processes in these non-target-related affordance effects. It is also proposed that overlapping inhibition mechanisms prevent executing impulsive actions relative to affordances of a target and exaggerate inhibition of response activation triggered by affordances of a non-target.Peer reviewe

The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: the transition to large-scale cosmic homogeneity
We have made the largest-volume measurement to date of the transition to
large-scale homogeneity in the distribution of galaxies. We use the WiggleZ
survey, a spectroscopic survey of over 200,000 blue galaxies in a cosmic volume
of ~1 (Gpc/h)^3. A new method of defining the 'homogeneity scale' is presented,
which is more robust than methods previously used in the literature, and which
can be easily compared between different surveys. Due to the large cosmic depth
of WiggleZ (up to z=1) we are able to make the first measurement of the
transition to homogeneity over a range of cosmic epochs. The mean number of
galaxies N(<r) in spheres of comoving radius r is proportional to r^3 within
1%, or equivalently the fractal dimension of the sample is within 1% of D_2=3,
at radii larger than 71 \pm 8 Mpc/h at z~0.2, 70 \pm 5 Mpc/h at z~0.4, 81 \pm 5
Mpc/h at z~0.6, and 75 \pm 4 Mpc/h at z~0.8. We demonstrate the robustness of
our results against selection function effects, using a LCDM N-body simulation
and a suite of inhomogeneous fractal distributions. The results are in
excellent agreement with both the LCDM N-body simulation and an analytical LCDM
prediction. We can exclude a fractal distribution with fractal dimension below
D_2=2.97 on scales from ~80 Mpc/h up to the largest scales probed by our
measurement, ~300 Mpc/h, at 99.99% confidence.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
