    Subjective action competence of music students: a comparison of different fields of study

    Die vorliegende Untersuchung folgt der Pilotstudie zu subjektiven Handlungskompetenzen von Musikstudierenden und zielt auf eine Differenzierung der darin vorgelegten empirischen Befunde und eine Validierung der dort faktorenanalytisch gebildeten Skalen (Inventar zur Erfassung der Berufs- und Studiumsorientierung in der musikpĂ€dagogischen Ausbildung, IBSO) an einer erweiterten Stichprobe. In der Pilotstudie wurde eine erste Konstruktion messbarer subjektiver Kompetenz" und Motivationskonstrukte vorgenommen. Hierbei resultierten sieben Skalen. Die Interkorrelationen der IBSOSkalen zeigten, dass diese zum Teil eine PersönlichkeitsabhĂ€ngigkeit aufwiesen. So kovariierte u. a. die Skala Resistenz deutlich mit einer geringen emotionalen LabilitĂ€t, wĂ€hrend die Skala StabilitĂ€t vermehrt mit einer positiven Selbstinstruktion in Stresssituationen einherging. Um einen Hinweis auf die Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenartigen AusbildungsstĂ€tten zu bekommen, wurde damals unterschieden, ob die Befragten an einer Musikhochschule oder an einer UniversitĂ€t studierten. Hierbei zeigte sich, dass die IBSO-Skalen eine signifikante Vorhersage des Studienortes ermöglichten, nicht jedoch die Stress- und Persönlichkeitsvariablen (fĂŒr eine detaillierte Darstellung vgl. von Georgi & Lothwesen, 2010a, 2010b). In der vorliegenden Studie sollen nun einzelne StudienfĂ€cher im Mittelpunkt der explorativen Analysen stehen. Um in Folgestudien eine theoriebezogene Forschung zu ermöglichen, wird hier erstmals ein theoretisches Modell herangezogen, mit dessen Hilfe sich die Ergebnisse weiterfĂŒhrend interpretieren und untersuchen lassen. (DIPF/Orig.)This study is grounded in questionnaire-evaluated data. Its primary aim is to differentiate and validate the results and factor-analytically derived scales of subjective action competence (Inventory Covering Professional and Study Orientation in Music Education, IBSO) obtained in a pilot study by enlarging the sample size up to 254 students from different fields of study (musicology, music education, music as school subject and instrumental studies). The central element of this study is a statistical inspection of the IBSO-scales’ ability to predict the course of studies in comparison to those of personality- (PANAS, SKI) and coping-scales (SVF). The study also examines correlations between subjective action competence, personality traits and coping-strategies. To address the discussion of music students’ needs, expectations and the external demands placed upon them we suggest the person-environment-fit model (PE-Fit) as theoretical basis and incorporate this study’s outcomes into it. The results of this study confirm the pilot study’s findings: the polarity of statistical effects remains, personality- and coping-scales correlate positively to subjective action competence scales, however, they have no significant impact on the latter’s prediction of the course of studies. Finally, a multinomial logistic regression analysis reveals that only the IBSO-scales are able to predict the students’ fields of study considerably.     Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Comparison of Current Knowledge, Attitudes and Interest among German Medical Students and Doctors

    Although it has been agreed that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) should be included in the German medical curriculum, there is no consensus on which methods and how it should be taught. This study aimed to assess needs for CAM education by evaluating current knowledge, attitudes and interests of medical students, general physicians and gynecologists. Two instruments based on established and validated questionnaires were developed. One was given to seventh semester medical students and the other to office-based doctors. Data were analyzed by bivariate correlation and cross-tabulation. Altogether 550 questionnaires were distributed—280 to doctors and 270 to medical students. Completed questionnaires were returned by 80.4% of students and 78.2% of doctors. Although 73.8% (160/219) of doctors and 40% (87/217) of students had already informed themselves about CAM, neither group felt that they knew much about CAM. Doctors believed that CAM was most useful in general medicine, supportive oncology, pediatrics, dermatology and gynecology, while students believed that dermatology, general medicine, psychiatry and rheumatology offered opportunities; both recommended that CAM should be taught in these areas. Both groups believed that CAM should be included in medical education; however, they believed that CAM needed more investigation and should be taught “critically". German doctors and students would like to be better informed about CAM. An approach which teaches fundamental competences to students, chooses specific content based on evidence, demographics and medical conditions and provides students with the skills they need for future learning should be adopted

    Apitherapy: Usage And Experience In German Beekeepers

    This study aimed to investigate the practice of apitherapy - using bee products such as honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom to prevent or treat illness and promote healing - among German beekeepers and to evaluate their experiences with these therapies. A questionnaire incorporating two instruments on beekeepers’ physical and mental health and working practice was included in three German beekeeping journals and readers were asked to complete it. The instrument included questions on the use of apitherapy. Simple descriptive methods, bivariate correlation, cross-tabulation and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data. Altogether 1059 completed questionnaires were received. The beekeepers reported the most effective and favorable therapeutic effects with honey, followed by propolis, pollen and royal jelly. The factors associated with successful experiences were: age, number of hives tended, health consciousness, positive experiences with one product and self-administration of treatment. Beekeepers were asked for which condition they would employ propolis and pollen. They reported that they used propolis most frequently to treat colds, wounds and burns, sore throats, gum disorders and also as a general prophylactic, while pollen was most commonly used as a general prophylactic and, less frequently, in treating prostate diseases. No adverse experiences were reported. The potential benefit of bee products is supported by the positive experiences of a large group of beekeepers who use some of these products to treat a wide range of conditions. The indications and treatments given here may be important in selecting bee products and designing future trials

    THE IMPACT OF ATTACHMENT PARAMETERS IN CHILDHOOD ON THE PERSONALITY OF ADULTS WITH MENTAL DISORDERS

    Background: Attachment parameters have an effect on later relationship patterns and the development of parameters of selfconcept and personality. In the current study the role of attachment parameters on personality dimensions was investigated, especially with respect to personality disorders. Subjects and methods: 134 psychiatric inpatients were examined on attachment and personality parameters using the schedule FEB as a questionnaire on the parental attachment and the SKI as a self-concept inventory. Results: Regression and correlation analyses suggest positive influences of parental care and negative influences of parental overprotection on the development of ego-strength in adulthood. Patients with personality disorders reported to have experienced less maternal care during their childhood and showed a trend towards a reduced ego-strength in adulthood compared to patients with others mental disorders. Conclusions: Relationships of attachment parameters in childhood with personality dimension are explorable. This approach seems meaningful for a better understanding of the development of personality disorders. Clinicians should be familiar with attachment patterns when treating people with mental disorders in order to adequately include appropriate personality dimensions in the therapy

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe

    Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV

    Measurement of the W gamma Production Cross Section in Proton-Proton Collisions at root s=13 TeV and Constraints on Effective Field Theory Coefficients

    A fiducial cross section for W gamma production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137 fb(-1) of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W -> e nu and mu nu decay modes are used in a maximum-likelihood fit to the lepton-photon invariant mass distribution to extract the combined cross section. The measured cross section is compared with theoretical expectations at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. In addition, 95% confidence level intervals are reported for anomalous triple-gauge couplings within the framework of effective field theory.Peer reviewe

    Performance of the CMS muon trigger system in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    The muon trigger system of the CMS experiment uses a combination of hardware and software to identify events containing a muon. During Run 2 (covering 2015-2018) the LHC achieved instantaneous luminosities as high as 2 × 10 cm s while delivering proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV. The challenge for the trigger system of the CMS experiment is to reduce the registered event rate from about 40 MHz to about 1 kHz. Significant improvements important for the success of the CMS physics program have been made to the muon trigger system via improved muon reconstruction and identification algorithms since the end of Run 1 and throughout the Run 2 data-taking period. The new algorithms maintain the acceptance of the muon triggers at the same or even lower rate throughout the data-taking period despite the increasing number of additional proton-proton interactions in each LHC bunch crossing. In this paper, the algorithms used in 2015 and 2016 and their improvements throughout 2017 and 2018 are described. Measurements of the CMS muon trigger performance for this data-taking period are presented, including efficiencies, transverse momentum resolution, trigger rates, and the purity of the selected muon sample. This paper focuses on the single- and double-muon triggers with the lowest sustainable transverse momentum thresholds used by CMS. The efficiency is measured in a transverse momentum range from 8 to several hundred GeV

    Search for long-lived particles decaying to jets with displaced vertices in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 Te V

    A search is presented for long-lived particles produced in pairs in proton-proton collisions at the LHC operating at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the period from 2015 through 2018, and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 140 fb(-1). This search targets pairs of long-lived particles with mean proper decay lengths between 0.1 and 100 mm, each of which decays into at least two quarks that hadronize to jets, resulting in a final state with two displaced vertices. No significant excess of events with two displaced vertices is observed. In the context of R-parity violating supersymmetry models, the pair production of long-lived neutralinos, gluinos, and top squarks is excluded at 95% confidence level for cross sections larger than 0.08 fb, masses between 800 and 3000 GeV, and mean proper decay lengths between 1 and 25 mm.Peer reviewe
