    Measuring the dynamic photosynthome

    Background: Photosynthesis underpins plant productivity and yet is notoriously sensitive to small changes inenvironmental conditions, meaning that quantitation in nature across different time scales is not straightforward. The ‘dynamic’ changes in photosynthesis (i.e. the kinetics of the various reactions of photosynthesis in response to environmental shifts) are now known to be important in driving crop yield. Scope: It is known that photosynthesis does not respond in a timely manner, and even a small temporal “mismatch” between a change in the environment and the appropriate response of photosynthesis toward optimality can result in a fall in productivity. Yet the most commonly measured parameters are still made at steady state or a temporary steady state (including those for crop breeding purposes), meaning that new photosynthetic traits remain undiscovered. Conclusions: There is a great need to understand photosynthesis dynamics from a mechanistic and biological viewpoint especially when applied to the field of ‘phenomics’ which typically uses large genetically diverse populations of plants. Despite huge advances in measurement technology in recent years, it is still unclear whether we possess the capability of capturing and describing the physiologically relevant dynamic features of field photosynthesis in sufficient detail. Such traits are highly complex, hence we dub this the ‘photosynthome’. This review sets out the state of play and describes some approaches that could be made to address this challenge with reference to the relevant biological processes involved

    A Robotics Environment for Software Engineering Courses

    The initial idea of using Lego Mindstorms Robots for student courses had soon to be expanded to a simulation environment as the user base in students grew larger and the need for parallel development and testing arose. An easy to use and easy to set up means of providing positioning data led to the creation of an indoor positioning system so that new users can adapt quickly and successfully, as sensors on the actual robots are difficult to configure and hard to interpret in an environmental context. A global positioning system shared among robots can make local sensors obsolete and still deliver more precise information than currently available sensors, also providing the base necessary for the robots to effectively work on shared tasks as a group. Further more, a simulator for robots programmed with Fujaba and Java which was developed along the way can be used by many developers simultaneously and lets them evaluate their code in a simple way, while close to real-world results

    Field Observations with Laser-Induced Fluorescence Transient (LIFT) Method in Barley and Sugar Beet

    The laser-induced fluorescence transient (LIFT) method is a non-invasive remote sensing technique for measurement of photosynthetic performance of plants under laboratory and field conditions. We report here a long-term comparative study to monitor the performance of different cultivars of barley and sugar beet during the growth season of these crops. The LIFT measurements provided useful results about photosynthetic light use efficiency on selected leaves in the canopy of the studied crops. The different canopy architectures, with different optical properties, influenced the LIFT measurements

    A leader in need is a leader indeed? The influence of leaders' stress mindset on their perception of employee well‐being and their intended leadership behavior

    The ability to respond appropriately to employees' work-related well-being requires leaders to pay attention to their employees' well-being in the first place. We propose that leaders' stress mindset, that is, the belief that stress is enhancing versus debilitating, may bias their perception of employees' well-being. We further propose that this judgment then influences leaders' intention to engage in or refrain from health-oriented leadership behavior, to express higher performance expectations, or to promote their employees. We expect this process to be stronger if leaders strongly identify with their team, increasing their perceived similarity with their employees. In three experiments (N1 = 198, N2 = 292, N3 = 250), we tested the effect of participants' stress mindset on their intention to show certain leadership behaviors, mediated by their perception of employee well-being (emotional exhaustion, somatic symptoms, work engagement) and moderated by their team identification. Our findings largely support the association between stress mindset and the perception of well-being. The results for the proposed mediation and the moderating function of identification were mixed. Overall, the results emphasize the critical role of leaders' stress mindset and may, thus, improve health promotion in organizations by helping leaders to adequately recognize employees' well-being and respond appropriately
