Development of a COMSOL Microdialysis Model, Towards Creation of Microdialysis on a Chip with Improved Geometries and Recovery

Microdialysis (µD) sampling is a diffusion-limited sampling method that has been widely used in different biomedical fields for greater than 35 years. Device calibration for in vivo studies is difficult for current non-steady state analytes of interest correlated with both inflammatory response and microbial signaling molecules (QS); which exist in low ng/mL to pg/mL with molecular weights over a wide range of 170 Da to 70 kDa. The primary performance metric, relative recovery (RR), relating the collected sample to the extracellular space concentration varies from 10% to 60% per analyte even under controlled bench-top conditions. Innovations in microdialysis device design have not deviated or improved upon the commercially-available cylindrical geometry for over 35 years. COMSOL Multiphysics finite element method (FEM) software was used to iteratively model and refine microfluidic-based (µF) µD device designs with the primary focus on optimizing channel geometry for improved RR. The primary focus was to improve fluid to membrane perimeter (P) to fluid cross-sectional area (A) and alter the concentration boundary layer (CBL) using passive µF mixing; which are not possible to fabricate using cylindrical geometries. The current µF µD design uses a simple asymmetric linear-looped (LL) geometry optimized with a P/A of 20 vs. 16.4 for a commercial CMA 20 µD probe with an equal 10 mm length. The simulated LL µF µD achieves a 16.1% relative increase in RR vs. experimental data at a 1.0 µL/min inlet flow rate using a 10 kDa FITC-labeled dextran as the analyte. Mixing was implemented and simulated using a modified herringbone geometry (HBM) and compared to an equivalent linear channel (LC). The HBM is shown to shift the CBL and increase diffusive flux at the membrane-fluid interface resulting in a 16.9 ± 0.7% relative increase in RR for 7 flow rates ranging from 0.125 to 2.0 µL/min vs. the LC. The combination of these changes is shown to increase RR above what is currently commercially available

Providing online access to oral history testimonies

W artykule podjęto problematykę tworzenia cyfrowych archiwów źródeł mówionych (ang. oral history), będących jednym z typów internetowych archiwów jakościowych danych badawczych. Na początku przedstawiono istotę metody oral history w ujęciu procesualnym, a następnie scharakteryzowano stosowane współcześnie rozwiązania w zakresie opracowania i udostępniania w sieci relacji ustnych w ich oryginalnej, tzn. dźwiękowej lub audiowizualnej postaci. W tekście odwołano się do przykładów ilustrujących wykorzystanie technologii cyfrowych na etapie opracowania i udostępniania wywiadów oral history użytkownikom.This article deals with the issue of building oral history digital collections which belong to the broader category of qualitative data archives. In the first part of the paper the oral history method was introduced and the phases of the oral history process were briefly discussed. Then different approaches to curating and disseminating oral history interviews in the form of digital sound and video recordings were presented and best practice examples in providing online access to oral testimonies were shown

Sustainable planning of cross-border cooperation: a strategy for alliances in border cities

In recent years, cooperation among nations has become a critical issue towards sustainable development of neighbor cities in border areas. In this regard, sustainable common planning approaches and policies are an increasing reality, particularly in European territories. Considering the significant amount of cross-border cooperation (CBC) projects and strategies within Europe, it is crucial to promote research approaches that are able to identify the most positive approaches towards the establishment of alliances in border territories, serving as pivotal methodologies for achieving success. Contextually, the present study considered direct and indirect research methods and tools, literature reviews, data collection, computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) and computer-assisted web interview (CAWI), all applied over two European border cities: Cieszyn (Poland) and Cesky Tesin (Czech Republic). These methods enabled the assembly of perspectives of local authorities, public and private institutions, non-governmental organizations, and entrepreneurs from the cities under study. Through the analysis of the collected data, five conditions have been identified for the success of strategic alliances in CBC projects: (i) well defining the alliance goals; (ii) ensuring participation in the alliance of various groups of stakeholders; (iii) involvement of both partners with extensive experience in CBC; (iv) ensuring the coherence of the key objective; and (v) guaranteeing the alliance benefits both sides. These conditions might effectively contribute to achieve more successful outputs in CBC projects, highlighting the relevance of previously developed strategies on the definition of future approaches.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Economic order policies and fiscal rules in Federal Republic of Germany

W opracowaniu podjęto kwestię ogólnych koncepcji polityki ładu gospodarczego i ich aplikacji na przykładzie reguł fiskalnych stosowanych w polityce gospodarczej przez Niemcy. W rozważaniach autor wyszedł z założenia, iż tylko dzięki polityce ładu gospodarczego można rozwiązać nabrzmiałe problemy finansów publicznych w krajach Europy, wynikające z polityki dyskrecjonalnej. Na wstępie przybliżono główne założenia polityki ładu gospodarczego, po czym omówiono reguły fiskalne w Republice Federalnej Niemiec (RFN), które następnie poddano krytycznej analizie z perspektywy ordoliberalnej teorii ładu gospodarczego.The paper addresses the general concepts of economic order policies (Ordnungspolitik) and their application, as exemplified by the rules used in German economic policy. The author's premise is that only an economic order policy can solve urgent problems of European public finance sectors resulting from the long term discretionary policy. Nonmesonic decay of the Lambda-hyperon in hypernuclei produced by p+Au collisions

The lifetime of the Lambda-hyperon for the nonmesonic decay Lambda N ---> N N has been determined by a measurement at COSY Juelich of the delayed fission of heavy hypernuclei produced in proton - Au collisions at T_p=1.9 GeV. It is found that heavy hypernuclei with mass numbers A= 180 +- 5 and atomic numbers Z= 74 +-2 fission with a lifetime 130ps +- 13ps (stat.) +- 15ps (syst.) . This value together with the results obtained for other heavy hypernuclei in previous investigations indicates (on the confidence level of 0.9) a violation of the phenomenological Delta I = 1/2 rule for Lambda N ---> NN transitions as known from the weak mesonic decays of kaons and hyperons. Testowanie psychologicznego (GAM) modelu agresji na próbie mężczyzn: Uzależnienie od substancji, stosowanie sterydów, cechy osobowości, wolna wola i perspektywa czasowa jako predyktory agresji

The study was carried out to verify how psychological models are able to explain the phenomenon of aggression among men. There is a lack of research that try to test in holistic way many factors of aggression. We try to enrich the results of research on male aggression by recognizing to what extent factors that have not been studied so far, such as willpower, temporal orientation, or the use of drugs or steroids, explain aggression in the group of men. The sample of men (N = 131) was selected deliberately in terms of substance dependence, steroid use and a free substance-free howl. Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) was used to measure five personality factors. The Zimbardo Time Perception Questionnaire (ZTPI) and the Start and Stop Control Questionnaire were used to measure temporal orientation and willpower, respectively. Correlation and hierarchical regression analysis were used for the statistical analyses. The results confirm the impact of personality, willpower construct and temporal orientation on the male aggression. We did not found that steroid use can be connected with aggression phenomena, but results supports the role of addiction. The research, however, has its limitations and the main ones are a small research sample and specific sample selection that make hard generalization of the results.Przeprowadzono badania w celu sprawdzenia, w jaki sposób modele psychologiczne są w stanie wyjaśnić zjawisko agresji mężczyzn, którzy zażywają narkotyków, sterydów lub nie stosują takich substancji. Próbka mężczyzn (N = 131) została wybrana celowo pod względem uzależnienia od substancji, stosowania sterydów i bycia wolnego od substancji. Do pomiaru pięciu czynników osobowości wykorzystano dziesięciopunktowy spis osobowości (TIPI). Do pomiaru orientacji czasowej wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Percepcji Czasu Zimbardo (ZTPI), a do pomiaru siły woli wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Kontroli Start-Stop. W analizach statystycznych zastosowano analizę regresji hierarchicznej i modelowanie równań strukturalnych. Wyniki potwierdzają wpływ osobowości, konstrukt siły woli i orientacji czasowej na męską agresję. Wyniki nie wyjaśniają jasno roli uzależnienia w zwiększaniu agresywności. Badania mają jednak swoje ograniczenia, a główne z nich to mała próba badawcza i konkretny dobór próby, co utrudnia uogólnienie wyników

The lifetime of the Lambda hyperon bound in hypernuclei produced by p+U collisions

The nonmesonic decay of the Lambda hyperon has been investigated by observation of delayed fission from heavy hypernuclei produced in proton-U collisions at Tp = 1.9 GeV. The lifetime of heavy hypernuclei with masses A approximately 220 obtained in the present work, i.e. tau = 138 +- 6 (stat.) +-m 17 (syst.) ps, is the most accurate result for heavy hypernuclei produced in proton and antiproton induced collisions on a U target so far.
