    An open natural museum using virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) methods based on geological reconstructions of the UNESCO Global Geopark Orígens territory is envisaged. The aim is to provide an emotional experience to the public for the understanding of geological and paleoecological systems, as well as their impact on landscape and human activity. To achieve these objectives, scientific reconstructions will be combined with virtual reality production technologies to generate virtual geological, paleontological and historical scenarios of 11 selected sites. The first results on the reconstruction of the virtual reality model of the Boixols-Sant Corneli anticline, catalogued as Global Geosite, are presented here. These also include timelapse 3D models restitutions with their corresponding paleogeographic interpretations, among which those of the Upper Cretaceous inhabited by the last dinosaurs of Europe. Animation production uses technologies that allow the superimposition of virtual images over real images to display on smartphones or VR glasses. These models will help to understand the evolution of the geological landscape both at the university and divulgation level and contribute to positioning the geoheritage as a tool for the sustainable rural development

    The IMERAPlus Joint Research Project For Determinations Of The Boltzmann Constant

    Abstract. To provide new determinations of the Boltzmann constant, k, which has been asked for by the International Committee for Weights and Measures concerning preparative steps towards new definitions of the kilogram, the ampere, the kelvin and the mole, an iMERAPlus joint research project has coordinated the European activities in this field. In this major European research project the Boltzmann constant has been determined by various methods to support the new definition of the kelvin. The final results of the project are reviewed in this paper. Determinations of the Boltzmann constant k were achieved within the project by all three envisaged methods: acoustic gas thermometry, Doppler broadening technique, and dielectric constant gas thermometry. The results were exploited by the interdisciplinary Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) in their 2010 adjustment of recommended values for fundamental constants. As a result, the CODATA group recommended a value for k with a relative standard uncertainty about a factor of two smaller than the previous u(k)/k of 1.7×10 −6

    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     Cationic nioplexes-in-polysaccharide-based hydrogels as versatile biodegradable hybrid materials to deliver nucleic acids

    Two polysaccharide-based hydrogels made of only κ-carrageenan (4%; w/v) or of a mixture of methylcellulose:κ-carrageenan (2%; w/v) were used to encapsulate cationic nioplexes. These vesicular particles were made of a synthetic aminolipid and polysorbate-80 (Tween-80), as a non-ionic surfactant agent. According to oscillatory rheological measurements, the presence of nioplexes did not compromise the mechanical integrity of the gels. In vitro niosomal release experiments demonstrated the liberation of nioplexes up to 24 h, and the curves were fitted according to Higuchi, Korsmeyer–Peppas and Weibull equation models, which indicated Fickian-diffusion controlled mechanisms. Besides nioplexes, cervical cancer cells were also entrapped within the biohydrogels. Cell release confirmed that these materials did not affect the cell viability, allowing cells to spread and proliferate after 24 h. The applicability of these biocompatible hydrogels was also extended to gene delivery. In this regard, the best silencing activities were found when cationic niosomes were complexed with antisense oligonucleotides in KC hydrogels. Nioplexes were able to release through the hydrogel and promoted silencing of luciferase expression in the presence of serum without using commercially available cationic lipids. Overall, the formation of such hybrid materials by integrating cationic nioplexes within biodegradable hydrogels provides a new perspective for the delivery of macromolecular therapeutics

    Background: Gene therapy can be an intriguing therapeutic option in wide-ranging neurological disorders. Though nonviral gene carriers represent a safer delivery system to their viral counterparts, a thorough design of such vehicles is crucial to enhance their transfection properties. Purpose: This study evaluated the effects of combined use of two nonionic surfactants, poloxamer 188 (P) and polysorbate 80 (P80) into nanovesicles – based on 2,3-di(tetradecyloxy)propan-1-amine cationic lipid (D) – destined for gene delivery to central nervous system cells. Methods: Niosome formulations without and with poloxamer 188 (DP80 and DPP80, respectively) were prepared by the reverse-phase evaporation technique and characterized in terms of size, surface charge, and morphology. After the addition of pCMS-EGFP plasmid, the binding efficiency to the niosomes was evaluated in agarose gel electrophoresis assays. Additionally, transfection efficiency of complexes was also evaluated in in vitro and in vivo conditions. Results: In vitro experiments on NT2 cells revealed that the complexes based on a surfactant combination (DPP80) enhanced cellular uptake and viability when compared with the DP80 counterparts. Interestingly, DPP80 complexes showed protein expression in glial cells after administration into the cerebral cortices of rats.
