    Spin-glass behavior in KxRu4-yNiyO8 hollandite materials

    We report the synthesis and comprehensive ac and dc susceptibility measurements of KxRu4−yNiyO8 hollandite. The value of the relative frequency shift, δTf , has been determined as 0.025 which is within the range expected for spin-glass systems (0.005–0.06). Additionally, the characteristic flipping time of a single spin flip, τ0, and the dynamical critical exponent, −zv, were determined to have values of 5.82×10−8 s and 6.1(3), respectively from the power law. While the value of τ0 is comparatively very large, −zv is consistent with what is expected for spin-glass systems. Field-cooled hysteresis behavior demonstrates a small increase in the remnant magnetization (at 2 K) on increasing the strength of the cooling field, suggesting that the degree of short-range correlations increases consistent with the formation of larger spin clusters. Thermoremnant magnetization data indicate an exponential-like decay of the magnetization as a function of time with the remnant magnetization remaining nonzero. However, it is clear from these data that multiple components contribute to the decay behavior. Collectively, these data confirm spin-glass character for K0.73(3)Ni1.9(5)Ru2.1(5)O8 and clearly demonstrate that the magnetic behavior of this material is far from simplistic

    The Musical Activism of Sweet Honey in the Rock

    Sweet Honey in The Rock is an African-American women’s a capella group that is almost 50 years old. While the ensemble has a repertoire that includes Negro spirituals, blues, and gospel songs, it also addresses international social issues, women’s oppression, social justice (domestic and abroad), and environmental justice. Early on, the group contributed their 5- and 6-part harmony to the American civil rights movement. Since then, their continually evolving membership has become an institution of harmonic social activism to diverse audiences in major and mid-sized cities of the US and around the world.This presentation describes and discusses contributions of Sweet Honey in the Rock to (1) historical social activism, (2) the legacy of (women’s) a capella, and (3) the timelessness of their discography as applied to current social justice issues. Participants are challenged to discover the intersectionality of the music with their respective academic disciplines and interests

    eggNOG v3.0: orthologous groups covering 1133 organisms at 41 different taxonomic ranges

    Orthologous relationships form the basis of most comparative genomic and metagenomic studies and are essential for proper phylogenetic and functional analyses. The third version of the eggNOG database (http://eggnog.embl.de) contains non-supervised orthologous groups constructed from 1133 organisms, doubling the number of genes with orthology assignment compared to eggNOG v2. The new release is the result of a number of improvements and expansions: (i) the underlying homology searches are now based on the SIMAP database; (ii) the orthologous groups have been extended to 41 levels of selected taxonomic ranges enabling much more fine-grained orthology assignments; and (iii) the newly designed web page is considerably faster with more functionality. In total, eggNOG v3 contains 721 801 orthologous groups, encompassing a total of 4 396 591 genes. Additionally, we updated 4873 and 4850 original COGs and KOGs, respectively, to include all 1133 organisms. At the universal level, covering all three domains of life, 101 208 orthologous groups are available, while the others are applicable at 40 more limited taxonomic ranges. Each group is amended by multiple sequence alignments and maximum-likelihood trees and broad functional descriptions are provided for 450 904 orthologous groups (62.5%

    Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of nosocomial and community-acquired infections. The success of S. aureus as a pathogen is due in part to its many virulence determinants and resistance to antimicrobials. In particular, methicillin-resistant S. aureus has emerged as a major cause of infections and led to increased use of the antibiotics vancomycin and daptomycin, which has increased the isolation of vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus and daptomycin-nonsusceptible S. aureus strains. The most common mechanism by which S. aureus acquires intermediate resistance to antibiotics is by adapting its physiology and metabolism to permit growth in the presence of these antibiotics, a process known as adaptive resistance. To better understand the physiological and metabolic changes associated with adaptive resistance, six daptomycin-susceptible and -nonsusceptible isogenic strain pairs were examined for changes in growth, competitive fitness, and metabolic alterations. Interestingly, daptomycin nonsusceptibility coincides with a slightly delayed transition to the postexponential growth phase and alterations in metabolism. Specifically, daptomycin-nonsusceptible strains have decreased tricarboxylic acid cycle activity, which correlates with increased synthesis of pyrimidines and purines and increased carbon flow to pathways associated with wall teichoic acid and peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Importantly, these data provided an opportunity to alter the daptomycin nonsusceptibility phenotype by manipulating bacterial metabolism, a first step in developing compounds that target metabolic pathways that can be used in combination with daptomycin to reduce treatment failures

    A novel type of intermittency in a nonlinear dynamo in a compressible flow

    The transition to intermittent mean--field dynamos is studied using numerical simulations of isotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence driven by a helical flow. The low-Prandtl number regime is investigated by keeping the kinematic viscosity fixed while the magnetic diffusivity is varied. Just below the critical parameter value for the onset of dynamo action, a transient mean--field with low magnetic energy is observed. After the transition to a sustained dynamo, the system is shown to evolve through different types of intermittency until a large--scale coherent field with small--scale turbulent fluctuations is formed. Prior to this coherent field stage, a new type of intermittency is detected, where the magnetic field randomly alternates between phases of coherent and incoherent large--scale spatial structures. The relevance of these findings to the understanding of the physics of mean--field dynamo and the physical mechanisms behind intermittent behavior observed in stellar magnetic field variability are discussed.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure

    Influence of patch shape on mallard nest survival in northern Iowa

    Reproductive success of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) is influenced by distribution and amount of wetlands and grasslands on the landscape during the breeding season. Most studies of mallard reproductive success have been conducted in areas with high wetland densities and large tracts of grasslands. We investigated nest survival of mallards in intensively cropped northern Iowa, USA, where wetland and grassland habitats were highly fragmented. We radiotracked female mallards nesting during 1998–2000 and located 318 nests in 6 types of land cover. Overall daily survival rate of nests was 0.945 ± 0.003 standard error (SE), corresponding to an estimated nest survival rate of 0.14. Hen success (i.e., the probability that an individual female will hatch a nest in one of her attempts) averaged 0.28 ± 0.03 SE. We used a model selection approach to examine covariates that might affect nest survival. Perimeter-to-area ratio (PAR) of the nest patch was the most important predictor of daily nest survival, with nest survival decreasing with increasing PAR. A greater percentage of nests hatched (18%) in habitats with low perimeter-to-area ratios (e.g., pastures, hayfields, Conservation Reserve Program fields, and managed grasslands) compared with habitats with high PAR (11%) such as drainage ditches, road-side ditches, fencerows, and waterways. Managing habitat in this region to increase mallard nest survival will be challenging, given the propensity of mallards to nest in linear habitats. If the climate change projections materialize in the 21st century, the southeastern portion of the Prairie Pothole Region could become a much more important breeding area for midcontinent mallards.
