Small-polaron hopping conductivity in bilayer manganite LaSrMnO
We report anisotropic resistivity measurements on a
LaSrMnO single crystal over a temperature range
from 2 to 400 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. For K, the
temperature dependence of the zero-field in-plane resistivity
obeys the adiabatic small polaron hopping mechanism, while the out-of-plane
resistivity can be ascribed by an Arrhenius law with the same
activation energy. Considering the magnetic character of the polarons and the
close correlation between the resistivity and magnetization, we developed a
model which allows the determination of . The excellent
agreement of the calculations with the measurements indicates that small
polarons play an essential role in the electrical transport properties in the
paramagnetic phase of bilayer manganites.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review
Low-temperature electrical transport in bilayer manganite LaSrMnO
The temperature and magnetic field dependence of anisotropic in-plane
and out-of-plane resistivities have been investigated in
single crystals of the bilayer manganite LaSrMnO.
Below the Curie transition temperature 125 K, and
display almost the same temperature dependence with an up-turn around 50 K. In
the metallic regime (50 K 110 K), both and
follow a dependence, consistent with the two-magnon
scattering. We found that the value of the proportionality coefficient
and the ratio of the exchange interaction obtained
by fitting the data are in excellent agreement with the calculated
based on the two-magnon model and deduced from neutron scattering,
respectively. This provides further support for this scattering mechanism. At
even lower , in the non-metallic regime ( 50 K), {\it both} the in-plane
and out-of-plane conductivities obey a
dependence, consistent with weak localization effects. Hence, this demonstrates
the three-dimensional metallic nature of the bilayer manganite
LaSrMnO at .Comment: 7 pages and 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
The use effectiveness of the copper T-200 in Matlab, Bangladesh
Using a unique record keeping system, the use effectiveness of the Copper T-200 is examined in rural Bangladesh. In Matlab the Copper T-200 is a highly effective contraceptive modality. The adopters are typically low to medium parity women under 30 years of age. The most important cause of termination among women in the study was voluntary removal of the device. The complaint most often reported was bleeding followed by pain and weakness. The Matlab experience suggests that sustained motivation and regular resupply are the two key components of this highly successful family planning program.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/26626/1/0000167.pd
Purification of bacterial membrane sensor kinases and biophysical methods for determination of their ligand and inhibitor interactions
This article reviews current methods for the reliable heterologous overexpression in Escherichia coli and purification of milligram quantities of bacterial membrane sensor kinase (MSK) proteins belonging to the two-component signal transduction family of integral membrane proteins. Many of these methods were developedatLeedsalongsideProfessor SteveBaldwintowhomthisreviewisdedicated.Italsoreviewstwo biophysical methods that we have adapted successfully for studies of purified MSKs and other membrane proteins – synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD) spectroscopy and analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC), both of which are non-immobilization and matrix-free methods that require no labelling strategies. Other techniques such as isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) also share these features but generally require high concentrations of material. In common with many other biophysical techniques, both of these biophysical methods provide information regarding membrane protein conformation, oligomerization state and ligand binding, but they possess the additional advantage of providing direct assessments of whether ligand binding interactions are accompanied by conformational changes. Therefore, both methods provide a powerful means by which to identify and characterize inhibitor binding and any associated protein conformational changes, thereby contributing valuable information for future drug intervention strategies directed towards bacterial MSKs
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in tau final states
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson using hadronically
decaying tau leptons, in 1 inverse femtobarn of data collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We select two final states:
tau plus missing transverse energy and b jets, and tau+ tau- plus jets. These
final states are sensitive to a combination of associated W/Z boson plus Higgs
boson, vector boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion production processes. The
observed ratio of the combined limit on the Higgs production cross section at
the 95% C.L. to the standard model expectation is 29 for a Higgs boson mass of
115 GeV.Comment: publication versio
Search for W' bosons decaying to an electron and a neutrino with the D0 detector
This Letter describes the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson W'
decaying into an electron and a neutrino. The data were collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton Collider at a
center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity
of about 1 inverse femtobarn. Lacking any significant excess in the data in
comparison with known processes, an upper limit is set on the production cross
section times branching fraction, and a W' boson with mass below 1.00 TeV can
be excluded at the 95% C.L., assuming standard-model-like couplings to
fermions. This result significantly improves upon previous limits, and is the
most stringent to date.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference
distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives ps.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
