Bone Dispersion, Weathering, and Scavenging of Cattle Bones

    Get PDF
In this research project, the goal was to study the pattern of disbursement of cattle bones from the site of death, observe any signs of scavenger marks and categorize the degree of weathering on the bones. In order to have a comparative data set, three sites with different characteristics were chosen. The three sites were chosen because of the ability to date the death of each cow, the length of time between each death, and the different locations, which each animal died The oldest site was a one-year-old yearling heifer which died in May of 1992. The next site was a twelve-year-old cow, which died in October of 2000. The last site examined was a five-year-old cow, which died in May of 2002. These three sites where chosen to act as a timeline and to form comparisons for the changes in bone dispersion, scavenger marks, and weathering

Upośledzenie słuchu i jego odzwierciedlenie w diagnostyce psychologicznej

The authors hereby present a report on research aimed at the possibilities of adjustments of psychodiagnostic materials to be used in the population of children with hearing impairments in order to reduce or eliminate the functional impact of the defect on the child's performance and consequently on the diagnostic process. The adjustment was made by formal language modification without intervention in the content, and by the creation of a version in Czech sign language. The B4J.E.P.I. personality questionnaire and a comprehension subtest using the Wechsler intelligence scale for children (further WISC4III) were experimentally modified and tested in practice between 2011 and 2016.4241543324Studia Edukacyjn

Electron spectroscopy of nanocrystalline diamond surfaces

    Get PDF
Thin, fully optically transparent nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films prepared at growth temperatures from 400 °C to 1100 °C were well characterized by SEM, AFM, and by angularresolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). The ARXPS spectra were applied for estimating the extent of sp 3 hybridization of carbon atoms in a surface region of the NCD films. Elastic peak electron spectroscopy (EPES) was used for assessment of the inelastic mean free path (IMFP) values of electrons in NCD films in the electron energy range 200 eV -2400 eV. The resulting IMFPs were compared to the IMFPs calculated from the optical data and from the TPP-2M predictive formulae

Comparison of DC Bead-irinotecan and DC Bead-topotecan drug eluting beads for use in locoregional drug delivery to treat pancreatic cancer

DC Bead is a drug delivery embolisation system that can be loaded with doxorubicin or irinotecan for the treatment of a variety of liver cancers. In this study we demonstrate that the topoisomerase I inhibitor topotecan hydrochloride can be successfully loaded into the DC Bead sulfonate-modified polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel matrix, resulting in a sustained-release drug eluting bead (DEBTOP) useful for therapeutic purposes. The in vitro drug loading capacity, elution characteristics and the effects on mechanical properties of the beads are described with reference to our previous work with irinotecan hydrochloride (DEBIRI). Results showed that drug loading was faster when the solution was agitated compared to static loading and a maximum loading of ca. 40–45 mg topotecan in 1 ml hydrated beads was achievable. Loading the drug into the beads altered the size, compressibility moduli and colour of the bead. Elution was shown to be reliant on the presence of ions to perform the necessary exchange with the electrostatically bound topotecan molecules. Topotecan was shown by MTS assay to have an IC50 for human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells (PSN-1) of 0.22 and 0.27 lM compared to 28.1 and 19.2 lM for irinotecan at 48 and 72 h, respectively. The cytotoxic efficacy of DEBTOP on PSN-1 was compared to DEBIRI. DEPTOP loaded at 6 & 30 mg ml-1, like its free drug form, was shown to be more potent than DEBIRI of comparable doses at 24, 48 & 72 h using a slightly modified MTS assay. Using a PSN-1 mouse xenograft model, DEBIRI doses of 3.3–6.6 mg were shown to be well tolerated (even with repeat administration) and effective in reducing the tumour size. DEBTOP however, was lethal after 6 days at doses of 0.83–1.2 mg but demonstrated reasonable efficacy and tolerability (again with repeat injection possible) at 0.2–0.4 mg doses. Care must therefore be taken when selecting the dose of topotecan to be loaded into DC Bead given its greater potency and potential toxicity

In vivo tomographic imaging of red-shifted fluorescent proteins

We have developed a spectral inversion method for three-dimensional tomography of far-red and near-infrared fluorescent proteins in animals. The method was developed in particular to address the steep light absorption transition of hemoglobin from the visible to the far-red occurring around 600 nm. Using an orthotopic mouse model of brain tumors expressing the red-shifted fluorescent protein mCherry, we demonstrate significant improvements in imaging accuracy over single-wavelength whole body reconstructions. Furthermore, we show an improvement in sensitivity of at least an order of magnitude over green fluorescent protein (GFP) for whole body imaging. We discuss how additional sensitivity gains are expected with the use of further red-shifted fluorescent proteins and we explain the differences and potential advantages of this approach over two-dimensional planar imaging methods

A Survey of Methods for Volumetric Scene Reconstruction from Photographs

Scene reconstruction, the task of generating a 3D model of a scene given multiple 2D photographs taken of the scene, is an old and difficult problem in computer vision. Since its introduction, scene reconstruction has found application in many fields, including robotics, virtual reality, and entertainment. Volumetric models are a natural choice for scene reconstruction. Three broad classes of volumetric reconstruction techniques have been developed based on geometric intersections, color consistency, and pair-wise matching. Some of these techniques have spawned a number of variations and undergone considerable refinement. This paper is a survey of techniques for volumetric scene reconstruction
