    Atmosphere Revitalization Technology Development for Crewed Space Exploration

    As space exploration objectives extend human presence beyond low Earth orbit, the solutions to technological challenges presented by supporting human life in the hostile space environment must build upon experience gained during past and present crewed space exploration programs. These programs and the cabin atmosphere revitalization process technologies and systems developed for them represent the National Aeronautics and Space Administration s (NASA) past and present operational knowledge base for maintaining a safe, comfortable environment for the crew. The contributions of these programs to the NASA s technological and operational working knowledge base as well as key strengths and weaknesses to be overcome are discussed. Areas for technological development to address challenges inherent with the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE) are presented and a plan for their development employing unit operations principles is summarize

    Attitudes and perceptions of next-of-kin/loved ones toward end-of-life HIV cure-related research: A qualitative focus group study in Southern California

    As end-of-life (EOL) HIV cure-related research expands, understanding perspectives of participants’ next-of-kin (NOK) is critical to maintaining ethical study conduct. We conducted two small focus groups and two one-on-one interviews using focus group guides with the NOK of Last Gift study participants at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Participating NOK included six individuals (n = 5 male and n = 1 female), including a grandmother, grandfather, partner, spouse, and two close friends. Researchers double-coded the transcripts manually for overarching themes and sub-themes using an inductive approach. We identified six key themes: 1) NOK had an accurate, positive understanding of the Last Gift clinical study; 2) NOK felt the study was conducted ethically; 3) Perceived benefits for NOK included support navigating the dying/grieving process and personal growth; 4) Perceived drawbacks included increased sadness, emotional stress, conflicted wishes between NOK and study participants, and concerns around potential invasiveness of study procedures at the EOL; 5) NOK expressed pride in loved ones’ altruism; and 6) NOK provided suggestions to improve the Last Gift study, including better communication between staff and themselves. These findings provide a framework for ethical implementation of future EOL HIV cure-related research involving NOK

    The influence of borderline personality traits on clinical outcomes in bipolar disorder

    Objectives: Systematic reviews suggest comorbid borderline personality disorder is presentin approximately 20% of individuals who have bipolar disorder, but current diagnosticsystems demonstrate a move towards dimensional rather than categorical approaches toclassifying personality pathology. We aimed to examine the presence and severity ofborderline personality traits in bipolar I and bipolar II disorder, and to explore associationsbetween the presence/severity of borderline personality traits and clinical outcomes inbipolar disorder. Methods: Borderline personality traits were measured in 1447 individuals with DSM-IVbipolar disorder (1008 bipolar I disorder and 439 bipolar II disorder) using the BorderlineEvaluation of Severity over Time (BEST) questionnaire. Lifetime clinical outcomes wereassessed via Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) semi-structuredinterview and clinical case-notes. Results: Borderline personality traits were common in both bipolar disorder groups, with86.2% participants reporting at least one trait. These included traits that overlap with (forexample, mood instability) and those that are distinct from the symptoms of bipolardisorder (for example, fear of abandonment). Borderline personality traits weresignificantly more frequent and more severe in bipolar II disorder compared to bipolar Idisorder. More severe borderline traits, and even the presence of a single borderlinepersonality trait, were significantly associated with younger age of bipolar disorder onsetand higher prevalence of lifetime alcohol misuse in both bipolar disorder groups.     Crystal structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of the bilayered rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7

    The bilayered rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7 was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature heating techniques. The single-phase polycrystalline sample of Sr3Rh2O7 was characterized by measurements of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and thermopower. The structural characteristics were investigated by powder neutron diffraction study. The rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7 [Bbcb, a = 5.4744(8) A, b = 5.4716(9) A, c = 20.875(2) A] is isostructural to the metamagnetic metal Sr3Ru2O7, with five 4d electrons per Rh, which is electronically equivalent to the hypothetic bilayered ruthenium oxide, where one electron per Ru is doped into the Ru-327 unit. The present data show the rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7 to be metallic with enhanced paramagnetism, similar to Sr3Ru2O7. However, neither manifest contributions from spin fluctuations nor any traces of a metamagnetic transition were found within the studied range from 2 K to 390 K below 70 kOe.Comment: To be published in PR

    Hybrid HIPIMS and DC magnetron sputtering deposition of TiN coatings: Deposition rate, structure and tribological properties

    High power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) has the advantage of ultra-dense plasma deposition environment although the resultant deposition rate is significantly low. By using a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system, a hybrid process consisting of one HIPIMS powered magnetron and three DC magnetrons has been introduced in the reactive sputtering deposition of a TiN hard coating on a hardened steel substrate, to investigate the effect of HIPIMS incorporation on the deposition rate and on the microstructure and mechanical and tribological properties of the deposited coating. Various characterizations and tests have been applied in the study, including XRD, FEG-SEM, cross-sectional TEM, Knoop hardness, adhesion tests and unlubricated ball-on-disk tribo-tests. The results revealed that, both the DC magnetron and hybrid-sputtered TiN coatings exhibited dense columnar morphology, a single NaCl-type cubic crystalline phase with strong (220) texture, and good adhesion property. The two coatings showed similar dry sliding friction coefficient of 0.8 – 0.9 and comparable wear coefficient in the range of 1 – 2× 10-15 m3N-1m-1. The overall deposition rate of the hybrid sputtering, being 0.047 μm/min as measured in this study, was governed predominantly by the three DC magnetrons whereas the HIPIMS only made a marginal contribution. However, the incorporated HIPIMS has been found to lead to remarkable reduction of the compressive residual stress from -6.0 to -3.5 GPa and a slight increase in the coating hardness from 34.8 to 38.0 GPa

    DNA mismatch repair gene MSH6 implicated in determining age at natural menopause

    The length of female reproductive lifespan is associated with multiple adverse outcomes, including breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and infertility. The biological processes that govern the timing of the beginning and end of reproductive life are not well understood. Genetic variants are known to contribute to ∼50% of the variation in both age at menarche and menopause, but to date the known genes explain <15% of the genetic component. We have used genome-wide association in a bivariate meta-analysis of both traits to identify genes involved in determining reproductive lifespan. We observed significant genetic correlation between the two traits using genome-wide complex trait analysis. However, we found no robust statistical evidence for individual variants with an effect on both traits. A novel association with age at menopause was detected for a variant rs1800932 in the mismatch repair gene MSH6 (P = 1.9 × 10−9), which was also associated with altered expression levels of MSH6 mRNA in multiple tissues.     A Historiometric Examination of Machiavellianism and a New Taxonomy of Leadership

    Although researchers have extensively examined the relationship between charismatic leadership and Machiavellianism (Deluga, 2001; Gardner & Avolio, 1995; House & Howell, 1992), there has been a lack of investigation of Machiavellianism in relation to alternative forms of outstanding leadership. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between Machiavellianism and a new taxonomy of outstanding leadership comprised of charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic leaders. Using an historiometric approach, raters assessed Machiavellianism via the communications of 120 outstanding leaders in organizations across the domains of business, political, military, and religious institutions. Academic biographies were used to assess twelve general performance measures as well as twelve general controls and five communication specific controls. The results indicated that differing levels of Machiavellianism is evidenced across the differing leader types as well as differing leader orientation.
