A total of 308 skulls and 200 jaws from 20 species and one hybrid of odontocetes cetaceans from the Peruvian Ocean were revised for anatomical description and evaluation of bone lesions. They were grouped into 8 types, plus those at the dental alveoli and osteolitic lesions caused by the nematode Crassicauda sp. From the total bone samples, at least 31.2% showed one type of craneo-mandibular lesion whereas the bottle nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncates) was the most affected. Dental alveoli lesions were found in 13.3% of the samples and bone lesions caused by Crassicauda sp. were in 17.3% of the skulls. The most frequent lesions were hyperostosis and osteolisis, followed by osteomyelitis, malformations and occipitoatlantoaxial ankylosed joints. Adult males showed higher frequency of bone and dental alveolar lesions and is suggested that the latter type of lesions could be associated with severe cases of osteomyelitis and osteolisis at the maxilar and mandibular level. The pterigoid bone was the most affected by the Crassicauda sp. nematode

The first measurements of the invariant differential cross sections of inclusive π0\pi^0 and η\eta meson production at mid-rapidity in proton-proton collisions at s=0.9\sqrt{s}=0.9 TeV and s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV are reported. The π0\pi^0 measurement covers the ranges 0.4<pT<70.4<p_T<7 GeV/cc and 0.3<pT<250.3<p_T<25 GeV/cc for these two energies, respectively. The production of η\eta mesons was measured at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV in the range 0.4<pT<150.4<p_T<15 GeV/cc. Next-to-Leading Order perturbative QCD calculations, which are consistent with the π0\pi^0 spectrum at s=0.9\sqrt{s}=0.9 TeV, overestimate those of π0\pi^0 and η\eta mesons at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV, but agree with the measured η/π0\eta/\pi^0 ratio at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV.Comment: 17 pages, 5 captioned figures, 2 tables, authors from page 12, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/310

Adult human kidney organoids originate from CD24+ cells and represent an advanced model for adult polycystic kidney disease

Adult kidney organoids have been described as strictly tubular epithelia and termed tubuloids. While the cellular origin of tubuloids has remained elusive, here we report that they originate from a distinct CD24+ epithelial subpopulation. Long-term-cultured CD24+ cell-derived tubuloids represent a functional human kidney tubule. We show that kidney tubuloids can be used to model the most common inherited kidney disease, namely autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), reconstituting the phenotypic hallmark of this disease with cyst formation. Single-cell RNA sequencing of CRISPR–Cas9 gene-edited PKD1- and PKD2-knockout tubuloids and human ADPKD and control tissue shows similarities in upregulation of disease-driving genes. Furthermore, in a proof of concept, we demonstrate that tolvaptan, the only approved drug for ADPKD, has a significant effect on cyst size in tubuloids but no effect on a pluripotent stem cell-derived model. Thus, tubuloids are derived from a tubular epithelial subpopulation and represent an advanced system for ADPKD disease modeling

The pt-differential inclusive production cross sections of the prompt charmed mesons D0, D+, and D*+ in the rapidity range |y|K-pi+, D+->K-pi+pi+, D*+->D0pi+, and their charge conjugates, about 8,400 D0, 2,900 D+, and 2,600 D*+ mesons with 1<pt<24 GeV/c were counted, after selection cuts, in a data sample of 3.14x10^8 events collected with a minimum-bias trigger (integrated luminosity L_int = 5/nb). The results are described within uncertainties by predictions based on perturbative QCD.The pTp_{\rm T}-differential inclusive production cross sections of the prompt charmed mesons D0D^0, D+D^+, and D+D^{*+} in the rapidity range |y|<0.5 were measured in proton-proton collisions at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. Reconstructing the decays D0Kπ+D^0\rightarrow K^-\pi^+, D+Kπ+π+D^+\rightarrow K^-\pi^+\pi^+, D+D0π+D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0\pi^+, and their charge conjugates, about 8,400 D0D^0, 2,900 D+D^+, and 2,600 D+D^{*+} mesons with 1<pTp_{\rm T}<24 GeV/cc were counted, after selection cuts, in a data sample of 3.14x108^8 events collected with a minimum-bias trigger (integrated luminosity LintL_{\rm int} = 5/nb).
