Analysis of the maxillary, palatine, pterygoid, and dentary bones of the Western Whipsnake, Hierophis viridiflavus carbonarius, revealed the presenceof grooves and ridges in the teeth on the four dentiferous bones. Enlarged and modified rear teeth were found on the posterior maxillaries, separated by alveolar diastema and aligned differently from the anterior maxillary teeth. In both live and dissected specimens, Duvernoy’s gland, associated with the production of toxins, surrounds the rear maxillary teeth, which deliver the secretions produced by the gland. These characters, plus theinfliction of prolonged bites, facilitate the subduing of prey. The morphology of the palatomaxillary arch places H. viridiflavus in the group of opisthoglyphous colubroids, whose modified fangs facilitate the inoculation of secretions, considered a “primitive form of venom.” Other species of large sympatric colubroids were also examined, and some analogous structures were observed

Transverse component of the magnetic field in the solar photosphere observed by Sunrise

We present the first observations of the transverse component of photospheric magnetic field acquired by the imaging magnetograph Sunrise/IMaX. Using an automated detection method, we obtain statistical properties of 4536 features with significant linear polarization signal. Their rate of occurrence is 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than values reported by previous studies. We show that these features have no characteristic size or lifetime. They appear preferentially at granule boundaries with most of them being caught in downflow lanes at some point in their evolution. Only a small percentage are entirely and constantly embedded in upflows (16%) or downflows (8%).Comment: Accepted for the Sunrise Special Issue of ApJ

Radon and material radiopurity assessment for the NEXT double beta decay experiment

The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT), intended to investigate the neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure xenon gas TPC filled with Xe enriched in 136Xe at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in Spain, requires ultra-low background conditions demanding an exhaustive control of material radiopurity and environmental radon levels. An extensive material screening process is underway for several years based mainly on gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors in Canfranc but also on mass spectrometry techniques like GDMS and ICPMS. Components from shielding, pressure vessel, electroluminescence and high voltage elements and energy and tracking readout planes have been analyzed, helping in the final design of the experiment and in the construction of the background model. The latest measurements carried out will be presented and the implication on NEXT of their results will be discussed. The commissioning of the NEW detector, as a first step towards NEXT, has started in Canfranc; in-situ measurements of airborne radon levels were taken there to optimize the system for radon mitigation and will be shown too.Comment: Proceedings of the Low Radioactivity Techniques 2015 workshop (LRT2015), Seattle, March 201

Factors affecting milking speed in Murciano-Granadina breed goats

[EN] Milk flow during the first minute of milking was analyzed using data from 1,132 Murciano-Granadina breed goats belonging to 17 herds. During the individual lactations, 2 test days were scheduled for recording several milk flow traits, total milk, milk composition (fat and protein percentages), and somatic cell count. Average lag time from teatcup attachment to arrival of milk at the milk claw (TO) was 4.9 s and at the milk meter (T1) was 15.8 s. Average milk flow after 30 s (MF0.5) was 0.29 kg/30 s (0 to 1.1 kg/30 s) and milk flow at 60 s or milking speed (MF1) was 0.67 kg/min (0.1 to 2.1 kg/min). Repeatabilities of T0, T1, MF0.5, and MF1 were 0.45, 0.58, 0.62, and 0.68, respectively. The MF1 showed high phenotypic correlation with T1 (-0.63) and MF0.5 (0.90), medium values with T0 (-0.42) and total milk (0.22), and very low values (-0.04 to -0.12) with fat, protein, and somatic cell count. We found no differences between flows during the first 3 lactations, with a reduction as the lactation number increased. Months in milk since parturition affected MF1, being highest in the first 3 mo (0.67-0.71 kg/ min) and decreasing until the end of lactation (0.58 kg/ min). The effect of herd-test day was significant for all traits. Inclusion of all these effects for the analysis of milk flow traits is considered necessary. The Japanese features on Fernando Iwasaki´s oeuvre will be the object of study in this article. Although there are references to other of his tales, most attention will be paid to España, aparta de mí estos premios and La lengua paterna. The former is a fictional work while the latter is a biographical one

Following the observation of adult pairs of the Western Whipsnake, Hierophis viridiflavus, in a controlled environment, two distinct but related phenomena were observed: egg deposition and predation of freshly laid eggs by the male. Data about deposition, number and morphology of the eggs, hatching and offspring are presented and compared with the literature. The episode of oophagy is described, confirming the inclination to predate snake eggs and intraspecific oophagy in this species.

    Three-body hadronic structure of low-lying 1/2+1/2^+ Σ\Sigma and Λ\Lambda resonances

We discuss the dynamical generation of some low-lying 1/2+1/2^+ Σ\Sigma's and Λ\Lambda's in two-meson one-baryon systems. These systems have been constructed by adding a pion in SS-wave to the KˉN\bar{K} N pair and its coupled channels, where the 1/21/2^- Λ\Lambda(1405)-resonance gets dynamically generated. We solve Faddeev equations in the coupled-channel approach to calculate the TT-matrix for these systems as a function of the total energy and the invariant mass of one of the meson-baryon pairs. This squared TT-matrix shows peaks at the energies very close to the masses of the strangeness -1, 1/2+1/2^+ resonances listed in the particle data book.Comment: Contribution to the NSTAR07 conferenc

Low lying S=-1 excited baryons and chiral symmetry

The s-wave meson-baryon interaction in the S=1S = -1 sector is studied by means of coupled-channels, using the lowest-order chiral Lagrangian and the N/D method to implement unitarity. The loops are regularized using dimensional renormalization. In addition to the previously studied Λ(1405)\Lambda (1405), employing this chiral approach leads to the dynamical generation of two more s-wave hyperon resonances, the Λ(1670)\Lambda(1670) and Σ(1620)\Sigma(1620) states. We make comparisons with experimental data and look for poles in the complex plane obtaining the couplings of the resonances to the different final states. This allows us to identify the Λ(1405)\Lambda (1405) and the Λ(1670)\Lambda(1670) resonances with KˉN\bar{K}N and KΞK\Xi quasibound states, respectively.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, revised version to appear in Phys.
