STUDIES OF PROTON PROTON COLLISIONS AT THE CERN ISR WITH AN IDENTIFIED CHARGED HADRON OF HIGH TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM AT 90-degrees. 2. ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF CHARGED PARTICLES IN THE CENTRAL REGION

For pt.I see ibid., vol.B135, p.461 (1978). Results are reported from an investigation of proton-proton collisions at a c.m. energy of 52.6 GeV, in which a charged hadron with large transverse momentum is produced near 90 degrees in the c.m.s. The momentum and charge correlations between identified high- rho /sub T/ trigger particles and other charged particles in the central region (rapidity mod y mod <3) have been studied. When the momentum of the trigger particle is increased, an increase of the density of high- rho /sub T/ particles with charge opposite to that of the trigger particle is observed in a small solid angle around the trigger particle. The sum of the momenta of charged particles inside mod y mod <1, following the trigger particle, is found to increase by about 30 MeV/c per GeV/c increase of the trigger momentum. Opposite in azimuth to the trigger particle close pairs of high- rho /sub T/ particles are observed in both neutral and doubly charged combinations. In this region one sees an indication of scaling in the x/sub E/ variable. (22 refs)

STUDIES OF PROTON PROTON COLLISIONS AT THE CERN ISR WITH AN IDENTIFIED CHARGED HADRON OF HIGH TRANSVERSE MOMENTUM AT 90-degrees. 1. ON FORWARD PARTICLES IN HIGH P(T) REACTIONS

In the course of an experiment to investigate the structure of final states from high-energy proton-proton collisions containing an identified charged hadron of high transverse momentum near 90 degrees in the c.m.s., correlations between the high-P/sub T/ trigger particle and forward charged particles were studied. An azimuthal asymmetry is observed for the forward particles. A transverse momentum recoil against the trigger particle is seen, largest at large Feynman x and apparently saturating with increasing trigger momentum. A flatter P /sub T/ spectrum is observed for the associated forward particles of 90 degrees in azimuth to the trigger than in normal events. The dependence of the correlations on the quantum numbers of the trigger particle is generally small in this region of phase space. (24 refs)

EVIDENCE FOR DOMINANT VECTOR MESON PRODUCTION IN INELASTIC PROTON PROTON COLLISIONS AT 53-GeV CENTER-OF-MASS ENERGY

The Split Field Magnet facility at the CERN ISR has been used to measure inclusive resonance production in inelastic p-p collisions at a cm energy of 53 GeV. The mass spectrum of pairs of oppositely charged hadrons shows a strong correlation, which can be explained as a consequence of dominant vector meson production, accounting for more than 60% of all pions and kaons produced.
