    The effect of the dust size distribution on asteroid polarization

    We have developed a theoretical description of how of an asteroid's polarization-phase curve will be affected by the removal of the dust from the surface due to a size-dependent phenomenon such as radiation pressure-driven escape of levitated particles. We test our calculations against new observations of four small (D ~ 1 km) near-Earth asteroids [(85236), (142348), (162900) and 2006 SZ_217] obtained with the Dual Beam Imaging Polarimeter on the University of Hawaii's 2.2 m telescope, as well as previous observations of (25143) Itokawa and (433) Eros. We find that the polarization of the light reflected from an asteroid is controlled by the mineralogical and chemical composition of the surface and is independent of dust particle. The relation between the slope of the polarization-phase curve beyond the inversion angle and the albedo of an asteroid is thus independent of the surface regolith size distribution and is valid for both Main Belt and Near-Earth asteroids.Comment: accepted to A

    Asteroid orbital error analysis: Theory and application

    We present a rigorous Bayesian theory for asteroid orbital error estimation in which the probability density of the orbital elements is derived from the noise statistics of the observations. For Gaussian noise in a linearized approximation the probability density is also Gaussian, and the errors of the orbital elements at a given epoch are fully described by the covariance matrix. The law of error propagation can then be applied to calculate past and future positional uncertainty ellipsoids (Cappellari et al. 1976, Yeomans et al. 1987, Whipple et al. 1991). To our knowledge, this is the first time a Bayesian approach has been formulated for orbital element estimation. In contrast to the classical Fisherian school of statistics, the Bayesian school allows a priori information to be formally present in the final estimation. However, Bayesian estimation does give the same results as Fisherian estimation when no priori information is assumed (Lehtinen 1988, and reference therein)

    Interpreting asteroid photometry and polarimetry using a model of shadowing and coherent backscattering

    The shadow-hiding models for the opposition effect and negative polarization of atmosphereless solar system bodies do not explain some experimental findings, such as the enhancing opposition effect and negative polarization with decreasing particle size down to wavelength scales. The enhancement for laboratory photometric and polarimetric data on artificial glass samples with different particle size is shown. These results are in agreement with the so-called coherent backscattering or interference mechanism proposed for the interpretation of the opposition effect and negative polarization. Two different approaches for describing the opposition effect and negative polarization produced by the shadow-interference mechanism were developed. One is based on exact electromagnetic solutions for simple scattering systems that include dipole-dipole and dipole-surface coupling; The other is based on a point-scatterer approximation characterized by model photometric and polarimetric phase functions, and the mutual shadowing effect is derived using virtual volumes associated with the point-scatterers. Both approaches yield qualitatively similar results, although neither is entirely satisfactory. We regard them as prototypes for a future unified model of shadowing and coherent backscattering.     Corporate social responsibility’s effect on the cost of equity capital during the financial crisis

    This study examines corporate social responsibility’s (CSR) effect on the implied ex ante cost of equity capital with a S&P500 data during sample period 2002-2013. In ad-dition, the relation between CSR and firm riskiness is analysed during the financial crisis period 2007-2009. The findings indicate that CSR investments have not decreased companies’ financing costs, but the impact has been rather neutral. Also, companies that have invested in CSR have not benefit from it during financial crisis compared to com-panies with low CSR. Furthermore, the impact of controversial business areas on the cost of equity capital is scrutinized. This study shows that companies involved in con-troversial benefit from slightly lower financing costs. This result holds even during the financial crisis period. The findings of this study indicate that the markets do not price the CSR activities. Thus, companies with higher CSR involvement do not benefit from lower financing costs from the capital markets. The CSR literature has not been able to fully explain CSR’s effect on firm valuation, and therefore there is no solid evidence about how CSR actually impacts on valuation.     Main-Belt Comet 238P/Read Revisited

    We present a series of observations of the return of activity in main-belt comet 238P/Read. Using data obtained in July and August 2010 when 238P appeared to be largely inactive, we find best-fit IAU phase function parameters of H=19.05+/-0.05 mag, corresponding to a nucleus radius of r_n ~ 0.4 km (assuming an albedo of p_R=0.05), and G=-0.03+/-0.05. Observations from September 2010 onward show a clear rise in activity, causing both a notable change in visible morphology and increasing photometric excesses beyond what would be expected based on bare nucleus observations. By the end of the observing period reported on here, the dust mass in the coma shows indications of reaching a level comparable to that observed in 2005, but further observations are highly encouraged once 238P again becomes observable from Earth in mid-2011 to confirm whether this level of activity is achieved, or if a notable decrease in activity strength compared to 2005 can be detected. Comet 238P is now the second main-belt comet (after 133P/Elst-Pizarro) observed to exhibit recurrent activity, providing strong corroboration for the conclusion that it is a true comet whose active episodes are driven by sublimation of volatile ice.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Albedo heterogeneity on the surface of (1943) Anteros

    We have investigated the effect of rotation on the polarization of scattered light for the near-Earth asteroid (1943) Anteros using the Dual Beam Imaging Polarimeter on the University of Hawaii's 2.2 m telescope. Anteros is an L-type asteroid that has not been previously observed polarimetrically. We find weak but significant variations in the polarization of Anteros as a function of rotation, indicating albedo changes across the surface. Specifically, we find that Anteros has a background albedo of p_v = 0.18 +/- 0.02 with a dark spot of p_v < 0.09 covering < 2% of the surface.Comment: Accepted to Icarus, 15 pages, 3 fig

    Determinations of Shape and Photometric Phase Function of Selected Asteroids

    The ground-based photometric observations of asteroids still is the main source to understand their basic physical properties, even though some space mission and space-based instruments have been applied in physical studies of asteroids. Owing to developments on scattering theories and 3D shape models of asteroid, we can carry out determination for basic physical parameters of asteroids from the photometric data. Here, we present photometric observations for some selected asteroids and light inversion results for these asteroids. In detail, they are: (1) To determine photometric phase functions of asteroids (107)Camilla and (106) Dione considering an ellipsoid shape and a cellinoid shape respectively; and (2) To inverse convex shape of main-belt slow rotating asteroids (168) Sibylla and (346)Hermentaria and a near Earth asteroid (3200) Phaethon. Based on derived photometric phase functions, the geometric albedo, and even rough taxonomic classification of asteroids are inferred. With the virtual photometry Monta Carlo method, the uncertainties of spin parameters of selected asteroids were compared.Peer reviewe

    Radiation fields in radiative transfer : spherical-wavelet representation

    The spherical wavelet based on the lifting scheme is introduced for adaptive discrete-ordinate sampling of the radiation fields, particularly, in the radiative transfer computation using iterative schemes. The lifting scheme for wavelet transform is described from an implementation point of view, including the construction of hierarchical geodesic grids on the sphere and wavelet constructions. In addition, we compare the method with the conventional spherical harmonics, numerically investigating the transformation error and efficiency. The transformation matrices are built in the least-squares sense. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using spherical wavelets as an adaptive discrete-ordinate sampling method at the cost of O(N), where N is the number of significant coefficients.
