    Effects of water volume rates on spray deposition and control of tarnished plant bug [Hemiptera : Miridae] in strawberry crops

    Des expériences ont été effectuées pour vérifier l'effet de trois volumes d'application de bouillie sur la couverture de fraisiers ( Fragaria ananassa: cultivars Kent et Chambly) et sur l'efficacité d'un insecticide contre la punaise terne ( Lygus lineolaris). Les expériences ont été réalisées à un taux constant de matière active pour des volumes de bouillie de 500 et 1500 L ha-1. La couverture des plants a été mesurée à l'aide d'un traceur fluorescent pour des volumes d'application de 500, 1000 et 1500 L ha-1 sur des échantillons pris au sol et sur différentes parties des plants. Les populations de punaise terne ont été évaluées 24 heures avant et après les traitements avec du malathion (4,5 kg m.a. ha-1) en utilisant 0, 500 et 1500 L ha-1. Les données normalisées pour un taux constant de matière active ont montré qu'une augmentation du volume de bouillie de 500 à 1500 L ha-1 n'avait généralement pas d'effet sur les quantités de traceur retrouvées. À quelques occasions, une augmentation du volume d'application a entraîné une baisse des quantités de traceur retrouvées, par exemple sur les feuilles du bas et du sommet du feuillage (Kent) et des sépales (Kent). Le contrôle des populations de punaise terne était acceptable sur le plan commercial à 500 et à 1500 L ha-1.Field experiments were performed on the effect of three volumes of application on spray deposition and insecticidal efficacy against the tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) in two strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) cultivars, Kent and Chambly. The rate of application of malathion was kept constant at 4.5 kg a.i. ha-1 for volumes of application of 500 and 1500 L ha-1. Plant coverage was measured using a fluorescent tracer applied at volumes of application of 500, 1000 and 1500 L ha-1. The tracer was recovered from samples taken from different plant locations and on the ground. Tarnished plant bug populations were evaluated 24 hours before and after insecticidal treatment. When coverage data were normalized for a fixed active ingredient rate, an increase in the volume of application from 500 to 1500 L ha-1 frequently had no effect on the amount of tracer recovered at the various locations. On some occasions, an increase in volume of application resulted in a decrease in the amount of tracer recovered, i.e. leaves at the top and bottom of the canopy (Kent), sepals (Kent). Tarnished plant bug population control was commercially acceptable at 500 and 1500 L ha-1

    Computer Analysis of Electromagnetic Field Exposure Hazard for Space Station Astronauts during Extravehicular Activity

    In order to estimate the RF radiation hazards to astronauts and electronics equipment due to various Space Station transmitters, the electric fields around the various Space Station antennas are computed using the rigorous Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) techniques. The Method of Moments (MoM) was applied to the UHF and S-band low gain antennas. The Aperture Integration (AI) method and the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD) method were used to compute the electric field intensities for the S- and Ku-band high gain antennas. As a result of this study, The regions in which the electric fields exceed the specified exposure levels for the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) electronics equipment and Extravehicular Activity (EVA) astronaut are identified for various Space Station transmitters

    A systematic review of covered balloon-expandable stents for treating aortoiliac occlusive disease

    Objective: To evaluate and compare studies reporting the outcomes of the use of covered balloon-expandable (CBE) stents for the treatment of aortoiliac occlusive disease. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies that investigated the use of CBE stents for the treatment of aortoiliac occlusive disease and were published between 2000 and 2019. Baseline demographic data, procedural variables, and long-term outcomes were extracted from publications for analysis. Results: A total of 15 published articles about 14 studies were included in the review. Of these, eight studies were prospective clinical trials and six studies were retrospective real-world studies. The articles included data regarding five different CBE stents, namely, the iCast/Advanta V12, Viabahn VBX, BeGraft, LifeStream, and JOSTENT. Lesion severity was higher in real-world studies, with more TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus Classification class D lesions and a higher percentage of occlusions. All studies showed high rates of technical success and patency over the course of 12 months. Long-term data were only available for the iCast/Advanta V12 device, which had a primary patency rate of 74.7% at 5 years. Conclusions: CBE stents are a viable treatment option for patients with complex aortoiliac lesions because of their high rates of technical success and favorable patency across all devices at 12 months. However, long-term data are only available for a single device, the iCast/Advanta V12. The results of using this device were favorable over the course of 5 years

    The Neurotoxicity of DOPAL: Behavioral and Stereological Evidence for Its Role in Parkinson Disease Pathogenesis

    BACKGROUND: The etiology of Parkinson disease (PD) has yet to be fully elucidated. We examined the consequences of injections of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde (DOPAL), a toxic metabolite of dopamine, into the substantia nigra of rats on motor behavior and neuronal survival. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 800 nl/rat of DOPAL (1 µg/200 nl) was injected stereotaxically into the substantia nigra over three sites while control animals received similar injections of phosphate buffered saline. Rotational behavior of these rats was analyzed, optical density of striatal tyrosine hydroxylase was calculated, and unbiased stereological counts of the substantia nigra were made. The rats showed significant rotational asymmetry ipsilateral to the lesion, supporting disruption of dopaminergic nigrostriatal projections. Such disruption was verified since the density of striatal tyrosine hydroxylase decreased significantly (p<0.001) on the side ipsilateral to the DOPAL injections when compared to the non-injected side. Stereological counts of neurons stained for Nissl in pars compacta of the substantia nigra significantly decreased (p<0.001) from control values, while counts of those in pars reticulata were unchanged after DOPAL injections. Counts of neurons immunostained for tyrosine hydroxylase also showed a significant (p=0.032) loss of dopaminergic neurons. In spite of significant loss of dopaminergic neurons, DOPAL injections did not induce significant glial reaction in the substantia nigra. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides the first in vivo quantification of substantia nigra pars compacta neuronal loss after injection of the endogenous toxin DOPAL. The results demonstrate that injections of DOPAL selectively kills SN DA neurons, suggests loss of striatal DA terminals, spares non-dopaminergic neurons of the pars reticulata, and triggers a behavioral phenotype (rotational asymmetry) consistent with other PD animal models. This study supports the "catecholaldehyde hypothesis" as an important link for the etiology of sporadic PD

    Quantifying Sources of Variability in Infancy Research Using the Infant-Directed-Speech Preference

    Psychological scientists have become increasingly concerned with issues related to methodology and replicability, and infancy researchers in particular face specific challenges related to replicability: For example, high-powered studies are difficult to conduct, testing conditions vary across labs, and different labs have access to different infant populations. Addressing these concerns, we report on a large-scale, multisite study aimed at (a) assessing the overall replicability of a single theoretically important phenomenon and (b) examining methodological, cultural, and developmental moderators. We focus on infants’ preference for infant-directed speech (IDS) over adult-directed speech (ADS). Stimuli of mothers speaking to their infants and to an adult in North American English were created using seminaturalistic laboratory-based audio recordings. Infants’ relative preference for IDS and ADS was assessed across 67 laboratories in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia using the three common methods for measuring infants’ discrimination (head-turn preference, central fixation, and eye tracking). The overall meta-analytic effect size (Cohen’s d) was 0.35, 95% confidence interval = [0.29, 0.42], which was reliably above zero but smaller than the meta-analytic mean computed from previous literature (0.67). The IDS preference was significantly stronger in older children, in those children for whom the stimuli matched their native language and dialect, and in data from labs using the head-turn preference procedure. Together, these findings replicate the IDS preference but suggest that its magnitude is modulated by development, native-language experience, and testing procedure
