A nonlinear hydrodynamical approach to granular materials
We propose a nonlinear hydrodynamical model of granular materials. We show
how this model describes the formation of a sand pile from a homogeneous
distribution of material under gravity, and then discuss a simulation of a
rotating sandpile which shows, in qualitative agreement with experiment, a
static and dynamic angle of repose.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, RevTeX4; minor changes to wording and some

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay from Singlet Neutrinos in Extra Dimensions
We study the model-building conditions under which a sizeable
-decay signal to the recently reported level of~0.4 eV is due
to Kaluza--Klein singlet neutrinos in theories with large extra dimensions. Our
analysis is based on 5-dimensional singlet-neutrino models compactified on an
orbifold, where the Standard--Model fields are localized on a
3-brane. We show that a successful interpretation of a positive signal within
the above minimal 5-dimensional framework would require a non-vanishing shift
of the 3-brane from the orbifold fixed points by an amount smaller than the
typical scale (100 MeV) characterizing the Fermi nuclear momentum. The
resulting 5-dimensional models predict a sizeable effective Majorana-neutrino
mass that could be several orders of magnitude larger than the light neutrino
masses. Most interestingly, the brane-shifted models with only one bulk sterile
neutrino also predict novel trigonometric textures leading to mass scenarios
with hierarchical active neutrinos and large - and
- mixings that can fully explain the current atmospheric and
solar neutrino data.Comment: 33 pages, LaTeX, minor rewordings, references adde
Priorities for action on the social determinants of health : Empirical evidence on the strongest associations with life expectancy in 54 low-income countries, 1990–2012
The WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health set out an impressive collection of policy proposals on the social determinants of health. However, a serious weakness for securing implementation is the difficulty for policymakers in identifying priorities for action. The objective of this study is to determine a small set of the most influential determinants using existing data and an empirical approach. 45 Indicators from the World Bank's World Development Indicators are selected to measure attainment for the determinants proposed by the Commission. Panel data models of life expectancy at birth for 54 low-income countries over the years 1990–2012 (1188 country-years) are estimated. Each determinant is subjected to a robustness test using Extreme Bound Analysis, to determine the stability of its estimated impact on life expectancy. For 20 robust and significant determinants the magnitude of association with life expectancy is determined. The largest average increases in life expectancy at 14.5 months per capita is associated with a one standard deviation reduction in HIV prevalence among children, followed by advances in gender equality at 9.4 months. Improvements in life expectancy between 6 and 9 months are associated with agricultural production, political stability, access to clean water and sanitation, good governance, and primary school enrolment. Improvements below 6 months are associated with increases in private health expenditure and overseas development assistance, and control of armed conflict and HIV prevalence among men. There is no evidence that national income, public spending on healthcare and education, secondary schooling, terms of international trade, employment, debt service and relief, out-of-pocket expenditures, agricultural ex- or imports, lifestock production, foreign investment, urbanization or environmental degradation are robustly associated with population health. Results provide support for the relevance of some proposed policies. The findings can inform priorities for future research and policy action on the social determinants of health
Search for charged Higgs bosons in top quark decays
We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in top quark decays. We analyze
the \eplus, \muplus, , , , \etau and \mutau final states from
top quark pair production events, using data from about 1 of
integrated luminosity recorded by the \dzero experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We consider different scenarios of possible charged Higgs
boson decays, one where the charged Higgs boson decays purely hadronically into
a charm and a strange quark, another where it decays into a lepton and a
neutrino and a third one where both decays appear. We extract limits on
the branching ratio for all these models. We use two methods,
one where the production cross section is fixed, and one where the
cross section is fitted simultaneously with . Based on the
extracted limits, we exclude regions in the charged Higgs boson mass and parameter space for different scenarios of the minimal supersymmetric
standard model.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PL
Integrating sequence and array data to create an improved 1000 Genomes Project haplotype reference panel
A major use of the 1000 Genomes Project (1000GP) data is genotype imputation in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Here we develop a method to estimate haplotypes from low-coverage sequencing data that can take advantage of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray genotypes on the same samples. First the SNP array data are phased to build a backbone (or 'scaffold') of haplotypes across each chromosome. We then phase the sequence data 'onto' this haplotype scaffold. This approach can take advantage of relatedness between sequenced and non-sequenced samples to improve accuracy. We use this method to create a new 1000GP haplotype reference set for use by the human genetic community. Using a set of validation genotypes at SNP and bi-allelic indels we show that these haplotypes have lower genotype discordance and improved imputation performance into downstream GWAS samples, especially at low-frequency variants. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited.
