    Mental rotation meets the motion aftereffect: the role of hV5/MT+ in visual mental imagery

    A growing number of studies show that visual mental imagery recruits the same brain areas as visual perception. Although the necessity of hV5/MT+ for motion perception has been revealed by means of TMS, its relevance for motion imagery remains unclear. We induced a direction-selective adaptation in hV5/MT+ by means of an MAE while subjects performed a mental rotation task that elicits imagined motion. We concurrently measured behavioral performance and neural activity with fMRI, enabling us to directly assess the effect of a perturbation of hV5/MT+ on other cortical areas involved in the mental rotation task. The activity in hV5/MT+ increased as more mental rotation was required, and the perturbation of hV5/MT+ affected behavioral performance as well as the neural activity in this area. Moreover, several regions in the posterior parietal cortex were also affected by this perturbation. Our results show that hV5/MT+ is required for imagined visual motion and engages in an interaction with parietal cortex during this cognitive process

    There are two conflicting perspectives regarding the relationship between profanity and dishonesty. These two forms of norm-violating behavior share common causes and are often considered to be positively related. On the other hand, however, profanity is often used to express one’s genuine feelings and could therefore be negatively related to dishonesty. In three studies, we explored the relationship between profanity and honesty. We examined profanity and honesty first with profanity behavior and lying on a scale in the lab (Study 1; NN = 276), then with a linguistic analysis of real-life social interactions on Facebook (Study 2; NN = 73,789), and finally with profanity and integrity indexes for the aggregate level of U.S. states (Study 3; NN = 50 states). We found a consistent positive relationship between profanity and honesty; profanity was associated with less lying and deception at the individual level and with higher integrity at the society level

    Eosinophilic aseptic arachnoiditis. A neurological complication in HIV-negative drug-addicts.

    The finding of an eosinophilic aseptic meningitis in IV drug abuse is usually suggestive of an opportunistic infection or an allergic reaction. However, HIV-negative patients are at lower risk for developing these complications. Two young HIV-negative patients, with previous intravenous polytoxicomany, developed cystic arachnoiditis over the spinal cord associated with eosinophilic meningitis. Histology of the meningeal spinal cord lesions revealed a vasculocentric mixed inflammatory reaction. In one patient prednisone led to marked clinical improvement. Since infection, vasculitis, sarcoidosis and previous myelography were ruled out, we believe that the syndrome of eosinophilic aseptic arachnoiditis may be related to an hyperergic reaction in the meniges toward drug-adulterants inoculated through the intravenous route

    Nuclear spins, magnetic moments and quadrupole moments of Cu isotopes from N = 28 to N = 46: probes for core polarization effects

    Measurements of the ground-state nuclear spins, magnetic and quadrupole moments of the copper isotopes from 61Cu up to 75Cu are reported. The experiments were performed at the ISOLDE facility, using the technique of collinear laser spectroscopy. The trend in the magnetic moments between the N=28 and N=50 shell closures is reasonably reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations starting from a 56Ni core. The quadrupole moments reveal a strong polarization of the underlying Ni core when the neutron shell is opened, which is however strongly reduced at N=40 due to the parity change between the pfpf and gg orbits. No enhanced core polarization is seen beyond N=40. Deviations between measured and calculated moments are attributed to the softness of the 56Ni core and weakening of the Z=28 and N=28 shell gaps.Comment: 13 pagers, 19 figures, accepted by Physical Review

    Objectives:We characterized pairwise and higher order patterns of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibi-tor (NNRTI)-selected mutations because multiple mutations are usually required for clinically significant resist-ance to second-generation NNRTIs. Patients and methods: We analysed viruses from 13039 individuals with sequences containing at least one of 52 published NNRTI-selected mutations, including 1133 viruses from individuals who received efavirenz but no other NNRTI and 1510 viruses from individuals who received nevirapine but no other NNRTI. Of the 17 reported etravirine resistance-associated mutations (RAMs), Y181C/I/V, L100I, K101P and M230L were considered major based on published in vitro susceptibility data

    Pharmacokinetics, Safety, and Antiviral Effects of Multiple Doses of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Fusion Protein Inhibitor, JNJ-53718678, in Infants Hospitalized With RSV Infection: A Randomized Phase 1b Study

    BACKGROUND: This phase 1b study evaluated the pharmacokinetics, safety, and antiviral effects of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-specific fusion inhibitor JNJ-53718678 (JNJ-8678) in hospitalized RSV-infected patients aged > 1 to /=6 to /=3 to 1 to < 3 months) were randomized to oral JNJ-8678 or placebo once daily for 7 days. Dose increases followed data review committee recommendations (cohort 1: 2/6/8/9 mg/kg; cohort 2: 1.5/4.5/6 mg/kg; cohort 3: 1/3/5 mg/kg). Cohort 1 included a 9 mg/kg dose, as target exposures were not reached at lower doses. Sparse pharmacokinetic samples were assessed using population pharmacokinetics modeling. Safety was assessed by adverse events (AEs), laboratory tests, and electrocardiograms. To assess antiviral effects, RSV RNA viral load from nasal swabs was quantified over time using reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Patients received JNJ-8678 (n = 37) or placebo (n = 7). Pharmacokinetic parameters were similar at the highest doses for cohorts 1-3 (area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time of administration up to 24 hours postdosing at day 7: 35 840, 34 980, and 39 627 ng x hour/mL, respectively). Two grade 3 AEs were reported (both bronchiolitis; 1 JNJ-8678, 1 placebo), reported as serious AEs; all other AEs were grade 1 or 2. Two additional serious AEs were reported (rhinitis [JNJ-8678]; pneumonia [placebo]). No deaths, grade 4 AEs, or AEs leading to discontinuation were reported. Median RSV viral load change from baseline in JNJ-8678 vs placebo by day 3 was -1.98 vs -0.32 log10 copies/mL. CONCLUSIONS: In RSV-infected infants, JNJ-8678 was well tolerated.
