    ‘Ought Implies Can’: Not So Pragmatic After All

    Those who want to deny the ‘ought implies can’ principle often turn to weakened views to explain ‘ought implies can’ phenomena. The two most common versions of such views are that ‘ought’ presupposes ‘can’, and that ‘ought’ conversationally implicates ‘can’. This paper will reject both views, and in doing so, present a case against any pragmatic view of ‘ought implies can’. Unlike much of the literature, I won't rely on counterexamples, but instead will argue that each of these views fails on its own terms. ‘Ought’ and ‘can’ do not obey the negation test for presupposition, and they do not obey the calculability or the cancelability tests for conversational implicature. I diagnose these failures as partly a result of the importance of the contrapositive of ‘ought implies can’. I end with a final argument emphasizing the role the principle plays in moral thinking, and the fact that no pragmatic account can do it justice

    The Influence of Tractor-Seat Height above the Ground on Lateral Vibrations

    Farmers experience whole-body vibrations when they drive tractors. Among the various factors that influence the vibrations to which the driver is exposed are terrain roughness, tractor speed, tire type and pressure, rear axle width, and tractor seat height above the ground. In this paper the influence of tractor seat height above the ground on the lateral vibrations to which the tractor driver is exposed is studied by means of a geometrical and an experimental analysis. Both analyses show that: (i) lateral vibrations experienced by a tractor driver increase linearly with tractor-seat height above the ground; (ii) lateral vibrations to which the tractor driver is exposed can equal or exceed vertical vibrations; (iii) in medium-size tractors, a feasible 30 cm reduction in the height of the tractor seat, which represents only 15% of its current height, will reduce the lateral vibrations by around 20%; and (iv) vertical vibrations are scarcely influenced by tractor-seat height above the ground. The results suggest that manufacturers could increase the comfort of tractors by lowering tractor-seat height above the ground, which will reduce lateral vibrations

    Reconstruction-based speech enhancement from robust acoustic features

    This paper proposes a method of speech enhancement where a clean speech signal is reconstructed from a sinusoidal model of speech production and a set of acoustic speech features. The acoustic features are estimated from noisy speech and comprise, for each frame, a voicing classification (voiced, unvoiced or non-speech), fundamental frequency (for voiced frames) and spectral envelope. Rather than using different algorithms to estimate each parameter, a single statistical model is developed. This comprises a set of acoustic models and has similarity to the acoustic modelling used in speech recognition. This allows noise and speaker adaptation to be applied to acoustic feature estimation to improve robustness. Objective and subjective tests compare reconstruction-based enhancement with other methods of enhancement and show the proposed method to be highly effective at removing noise

    Quantitative Analysis of LISA Pathfinder Test Mass Noise

    In this paper we discuss two main problems associated with the analysis of the data from LISA Pathfinder (LPF): i) Excess noise detection and ii) Noise parameter identification. The mission is focused on the low frequency region ([0.1; 10] mHz) of the available signal spectrum. In such a region the signal is dominated by the force noise acting on test masses. Noise analysis is expected to deal with a limited amount of non-Gaussian data, since the spectrum statistics will be far from Gaussian and the lowest available frequency is limited by the data length. In this paper we analyze the details of the expected statistics for spectral data and develop two suitable excess noise estimators. One is based on the statistical properties of the integrated spectrum, the other is based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The sensitivity of the estimators is discussed theoretically for independent data, then the algorithms are tested on LPF synthetic data. The test on realistic LPF data allows the effect of spectral data correlations on the efficiency of the different noise excess estimators to be highlighted. It also reveals the versatility of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov approach, which can be adapted to provide reasonable results on correlated data from a modified version of the standard equations for the inversion of the test statistic. Closely related to excess noise detection, the problem of noise parameter identification in non-Gaussian data is approached in two ways. One procedure is based on maximum likelihood estimator and another is based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness of fit estimator. Both approaches provide unbiased and accurate results for noise parameter estimation and demonstrate superior performance with respect to standard weighted least-squares and Huber's norm.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys Rev

    Temporal characteristics of semantic perseverations induced by blocked-cyclic picture naming

    When unimpaired participants name pictures quickly, they produce many perseverations that bear a semantic relation to the target, especially when the pictures are blocked by category. Evidence suggests that the temporal properties of these "semantic perseverations" may differ from typical lexical perseverations in aphasia. To explore this, we studied semantic perseverations generated by participants with aphasia on a naming task with semantic blocking [Schnur, T. T., Schwartz, M. F., Brecher, A., & Hodgson, C. (2006). Semantic interference during blocked-cyclic naming: Evidence from aphasia. Journal of Memory and Language, 54, 199-227]. The properties of these perseverations were investigated by analyzing how often they occurred at each lag (distance from prior occurrence) and how time (response-stimulus interval) influenced the lag function. Chance data sets were created by reshuffling stimulus-response pairs in a manner that preserved unique features of the blocking design. We found that the semantic blocking manipulation did not eliminate the expected bias for short-lag perseverations (recency bias). However, immediate (lag 1) perseverations were not invariably the most frequent, which hints at a source of inconsistency within and across studies. Importantly, there was not a reliable difference between the lag functions for perseverations generated with a 5 s, compared to 1 s, responsestimulus interval. The combination of recency bias and insensitivity to elapsed time indicates that the perseveratory impetus in a named response does not passively decay with time but rather is diminished by interference from related trials.
