"Universal" inequalities for the eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator

    Get PDF
In this paper, we establish universal inequalities for eigenvalues of the clamped plate problem on compact submanifolds of Euclidean spaces, of spheres and of real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces. We also prove similar results for the biharmonic operator on domains of Riemannian manifolds admitting spherical eigenmaps (this includes the compact homogeneous Riemannian spaces) and nally on domains of the hyperbolic space.Comment: Soumis (15 pages

Universal inequalities for the eigenvalues of a power of the Laplace operator

    Get PDF
In this paper, we obtain a new abstract formula relating eigenvalues of a self-adjoint operator to two families of symmetric and skew-symmetric operators and their commutators. This formula generalizes earlier ones obtained by Harrell, Stubbe, Hook, Ashbaugh, Hermi, Levitin and Parnovski. We also show how one can use this abstract formulation both for giving dierent and simpler proofs for all the known results obtained for the eigenvalues of a power of the Laplace operator (i.e. the Dirichlet Laplacian, the clamped plate problem for the bilaplacian and more generally for the polyharmonic problem on a bounded Euclidean domain) and to obtain new ones. In a last paragraph, we derive new bounds for eigenvalues of any power of the Kohn Laplacian on the Heisenberg group.Comment: A para\^itre \`a Manuscripta Mathematica (29 pages

ADHD : from childhood into adulthood

    Get PDF
This is an overview of the some of the most recent and seminal research done on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD). ADHD is currently one of the most common reasons for referral to child mental health services and still is under-recognised both in children (5.29%) and adults (2.5%). ADHD is a highly heritable disorder with a mulitifactorial pattern of inheritance. Parents, siblings and parents of a child with ADHD are 4-5 times more likely to have ADHD. Environmental factors also play a role in elucidating this disorder. Untreated ADHD leads to numerous co-morbidities, and longer term morbidity. Methylphenidate is suggested as the first line pharmacological treatment. ADHD is easy to treat, 80% of correctly diagnosed patients (children or adults) respond favourably to methylphenidate. All child and general adult psychiatrists should be aware of this disorder, comfortable with making the diagnosis and treating adults with ADHD. The purpose of the overview is to cover the epidemiology, aetiology, diagnostic criteria and different managements of ADHD.peer-reviewe

Ethnonationalism in the U.S., Lebanon, and Israel: A Transnational Analysis

    Get PDF
This paper comparatively examines three different ethnonationalist movements: the alt-right in the United States; Zionists in Israel, with a focus on right-wing Zionists; and Maronite Christian ethnonationalists in Lebanon. Scholars have put forth important analyses of the alliance between the alt-right and Zionists, yet not many have grappled with the existence of similar strands of ethnonationalist ideology in Lebanon or the history of cooperation that exists between Zionists and Maronite ethnonationalists, or even the alliance between the alt right and right-wing Lebanese Maronites in the Arab-American diaspora. This comparative analysis strives to add to existing analyses of right-wing ethnonationalist ideologies in the Middle East and United States, and to move away from the tendency to paint the alt-right and other right-wing movements worldwide with a broad brush

Generation and Characterization Ovarian Specific Promoter Sequences of a Transgenic Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Inducible cAMP early repressor or, ICER, acts as a tumor suppressor with ovarian specific properties and moderates cAMP anti-proliferative actions. In this study, CYP19A1 was selected out of the four previously cloned ovarian specific promoters (CYP19A1, FSH, ZP3 and GDF9). The purpose of this experiment was to test whether a -500 bp fragment of the CYP19A1 can function in the ovaries as a specific promoter that can be used to express transgenes in the ovaries. For this study, we generated transgenic Zebrafish that expressed Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) with the CYP19A1 promoter and proceeded to characterize by four different methods which were western blot, direct fluorescent visualization of tissue, immunohistochemistry, and PCR. The results of the study show that CYP19A1 was successfully expressed in the ovaries which also indicates that the selected promoter region of CYP19A1 can be an ovary specific promoter. This promoter can then be used in future experiments for the expression of relevant genes such as ICER, in the ovaries. If successful, overexpression of these promoters in the ovaries of Danio rerio causes an increase in ovulation, this can have significant implications for future research for increasing the production of fish
