    The structure of D₂O-nonane nanodroplets

    We study the internal structure of nanometer-sized D2O-nonane aerosol droplets formed in supersonic nozzle expansions using a variety of experimental techniques including small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). By fitting the SAXS spectra to a wide range of droplet structure models, we find that the experimental results are inconsistent with mixed droplets that form aqueous core-organic shell structures, but are quite consistent with spherically asymmetric lens-on-sphere structures. The structure that agrees best with the SAXS data and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy measurements is that of a nonane lens on a sphere of D2O with a contact angle in the range of 40°-120°

    Prescribing Antibiotics for pediatric dental patients in Jordan; knowledge and attitudes of dentists

    Objective: The inappropriate use of antibiotic in treating children has been observedin the treatment of dental infections. Recent surveys reported that dentistsin several countries have modest knowledge about antibiotic prescribing. The aimof this study was to investigate the knowledge and attitude of a group of Jordaniandentists treating children towards antibiotic prescribing.Methods: A written questionnaire was distributed during a meeting of the JordanianSociety of Paediatric Dentistry. The questionnaire included questions aboutthe knowledge and attitudes of dentists toward dental antibiotic prescribing tochildren.Results: Amoxicillin was the most popular antibiotic (62.9%) to be prescribed bydentists treating children. A lesser percentage (29.7%) prescribe combination ofantibiotics, and around 37% prescribe antibiotics for duration longer than 5 days.Erythromycin was the most popular alternative to amoxicillin (77.8%) followed byclindamycin (22.2%). A number of antibiotics were prescribed for non-indicatedclinical conditions like pulpitis and gingivitis. More than 50% of the sample prescribedantibiotics for non-scientific reasons like the “need to delay treatment†and“sterilization not guaranteedâ€.Conclusion: There is a need to improve awareness of Jordanian dentists regardingantibiotic prescribing to children particularly in the aspects of type of antibiotic tobe used for patients allergic and non-allergic to penicillin, duration of prescribing,and clinical indications. Dentists also should be discouraged to prescribe antibioticsbased on non-scientific/social factors

    Crystalline Field Effects on Magnetic and Thermodynamic properties of a Ferrimagnetic Centered Rectangular Structure

    The magnetic properties and phase diagrams of the mixed spin Ising model, with spins S=1 and {\sigma}=1/2 on a centered rectangular structure, have been investigated using Monte Carlo simulations based on the Metropolis algorithm. Every spin at one lattice site has four nearest-neighbor spins of the same type and four of the other type. We have assumed ferromagnetic interaction between the same spins type, antiferromagnetic for different spin types. An additional single-site crystal field term on the S=1 site was considered. We have shown that the crystal field enhances the existence of the compensation behavior of the system. In addition, the effects of the crystal field and exchange coupling on the magnetic properties and phase diagrams of the system have been studied.     Purpose: The study aims to clarify the role of corporate governance principles on improving market performance at Jordanian industrial sector by measuring the governance principles through board of directors members size (BSIZE), number of independent members (BCOMP), existence of an audit committee (AUDCOM), and ratio of institutional ownership (InstitOwn) while the market performance represented in dependent variable has been measured through modern indicators in evaluating market performance; such as market value added (MVA), economic value added (EVA) and return on assets (ROA), which considered one of the traditional indicators in evaluating market performance.   Theoretical Framework: Due to the great role played by corporate governance on stabilizing financial markets, increasing the competitiveness of public shareholding companies by enhancing transparency, improving the financial performance of companies, and achieving a balance of interests between the company's management, shareholders, employees, creditors, and other related parties, which means reducing capital cost and the possibility of obtaining less expensive sources to finance company's future projects.   Design/Methodology/Approach: The study sample consisted of (70) industrial companies that formulate (79%) of study population, during the study period of year 2022   Findings: The study results showed a statistically significant relationship between the market value added ratio of institutional ownership and return on assets, and nonexistence of statistically significant relationship between the institutional ownership ratio and economic value added. On the other hand, study showed no statistically significant relationship between the financial performance of industrial companies’ measures and the independent factors of board of directors’ size, number of independent members, and the presence of auditing committee.   Research, Practical & Social Implications: The study relied on multiple regression analysis models to identify most important variables that govern companies’ performance

    The state of HRM in the Middle East:Challenges and future research agenda

    Based on a robust structured literature analysis, this paper highlights the key developments in the field of human resource management (HRM) in the Middle East. Utilizing the institutional perspective, the analysis contributes to the literature on HRM in the Middle East by focusing on four key themes. First, it highlights the topical need to analyze the context-specific nature of HRM in the region. Second, via the adoption of a systematic review, it highlights state of development in HRM in the research analysis set-up. Third, the analysis also helps to reveal the challenges facing the HRM function in the Middle East. Fourth, it presents an agenda for future research in the form of research directions. While doing the above, it revisits the notions of “universalistic” and “best practice” HRM (convergence) versus “best-fit” or context distinctive (divergence) and also alternate models/diffusion of HRM (crossvergence) in the Middle Eastern context. The analysis, based on the framework of cross-national HRM comparisons, helps to make both theoretical and practical implications

    Elective cancer surgery in COVID-19-free surgical pathways during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: An international, multicenter, comparative cohort study

    PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks
